SKCC Weekend Sprint Results

July 22th Theme: Gridlock

Each person downloads or draws up the grid. You start with 10 columns, labeled 0-9. Now 10 rows to make 100 boxes. In the sprint QSO you exchange SKCC numbers as normal. You pad the number on the left with 0's to make it a four digit number like 0003. A non SKCC person gets 0000. For each of the four digits you get to check off one of the corresponding boxes in the grid.

All the boxes in a column have the same number so you have to accumulate ten 1s, ten 2s, etc. to fill the grid. Once you get the ten boxes for a digit filled, additional ones go for naught. The club call would pad to 0000.

Final score and bonus is the total number of boxes checked off. (max 100) You can download and print the grid from here: http://www.nt9k.com/skcc/gridlock.gif

Soapbox
K8JP I got into SKCC to revive my bug skills. This sure helped. With the arthritis, I had to increase my pain meds, but it was worth it. I am sure I may have second thoughts Monday morning. It was great seeing some old friends and meeting new ones. I wish some of the rarer states/prov. would CQ, not just S&P. Highlight was working my 100th SKCC number in my next to last QSO, W1WIU, Jim, in R.I., no less. Thanks to all for putting up with my very rusty bug fist. Now, to that glass of wine.

W9CC The fierce activity at the start is fun. I finally made it over the century mark. CU next time. 73.

AD5QB Had a lot of fun in this one. Picked up 13 new numbers, getting closer to adding that "C" to my 9! Maybe between August's monthly operating event and sprints I'll get there.

NN8B Not good props here again and still lots of power line noise. There were a couple of stations I couldn't dig out, sorry.

K3PBY Condx weren't that great here in Central Florida so my 15 watt homebrew rig and inv vee ant didn't produce much of a score. However, I sure enjoyed operating my first SKCC weekend sprint.

KG4W Worked Sunday only, started around 1155z. Managed to fill the 100 grids but just barely as column 4 was the last one to fall. Qrn was pretty bad & had to strain for lots of calls. Had 10 "C" qsos & 6 "T" qsos. See you next time.

WU7R Lots of new folks and lots of fun. Thanks, Bill...73, Ci

KL7GLL Got to check 91 of the grid boxes... 4s and 5s were hardest to find. Had a great time, as always. Wkd two new states (Tnx K4CNW for SC and W1WIU for RI). Only 2 Qs on 15 m and 1 on 80 m. 40 m certainly wkd best here.

N2JNZ Had fun with 100 watts and thanks to all who answered !! up to 89 #s !!!!

KC9HGW My Gridlock Bonus is 94. It was good to hear some new SKCC numbers. I also had QSOs with 3 non-members. One promised to submit his SKCC application this week.

KD5RSS Each time I participate I add more to my QSO's and more to my log. I had a blast and will continue to give it a go. I'm just 4 away from having a "C" added to my SKCC #. Thanks to all! Keep pounding the brass, and remember, Talk is cheap, real hams beep.

K0LUW A little frustrating because of band conditions but still a lot of fun as always. A bad day "sprinting" is still better and a good day of "honey do's".

VA3SIE I spent the afternoon sitting at a park bench under the shade of a tree, operating 2W from the KX1 to a 34ft wire with 16ft/32ft counterpoise.

I wasn't expecting to operate in the sprint, all I had was the built-in KX1 paddles so I used one paddle to send straight key morse.

Good fun!

N5SM My first contest. First Time using straight key in 30 yrs.
(Editor note) This is why I do all this!

AF2Z Made the most QSOs on Sat evening and the remainder early Sunday, most on 40m. 20m was weird-- some very good sigs but they couldn't hear me. QSO with Dennis W6UT (not strong) on 20m (then later on 40m) proved my antenna was in fact still up in the trees. Tnx to Martin VA3SIE for all the repeats... that was tough! (I'm going to count the QSO even though I got your name a little wrong; too much work to waste.) Tnx to all for the QSOs!... W9TFC, W9CC, K8AQM, K3PBY, N1LU, NN8B, W6UT, N2JNZ, K4CNW, AF4LQ, AA8R, K8JP, K4OSO, K4CZ, KJ3DK, K8BTD, W9FTC, KL7GLL, W8FHF, W1PID, K2RFP, KG4W, K4BAI, K8JD, VA3SIE.

KA3CTQ Had a good time and got a few new numbers.

Can I claim extra bonus point for working NT9K and K0LUW in every sprint I have run?

NG7Z Score includes 65 points for the gridlock thingy. Thanks to Bill for helping me get my score right. Let's do this again real soon.

W6SQQ Decided to take my 4 hours at the end of the contest. Missed the last hour due to XYL needing help getting 3 eager mutts to the dog park. In 3 hours, managed 9 contacts. Propagation was less than wonderful. Still, it kept me off the streets, and the action, tho slo, was enjoyable. My last contact was W6 in NorCal who was ripping along at 30+wpm and just wanted to give an old straight key guy a contest point. Looking forward to the next one. Many thanks to everybody who participated.

K4BAI FT1000MP, Alpha 78, TH6DXX, zepp, dipole. Breakdown of bonus points: C = 60; T = 60; Grid 95. Time: 2:53 hours. My first SKS event as a brand new member. Very enjoyable. Sorry was unable to operate more. Thanks for the QSOs. 73, John, K4BAI.

NT9K I only worked s&p on 20 and 40 meters. I completed gridlock barely with the last call I logged filling in the last box on the grid. I guess the hightlight was hearing all the new calls. Lowpoints, band condx and the entry form problems.

Even with the poor condx, this was the best sprint yet. So many new members, first timers and old friends on the air. A few times I just sat back and listened to all the beautiful music as I tuned thru the band. It's like that movie, Build it and they will come! Thank you all. 73 Bill - NT9K

K2RFP I was hoping to pick up a few Cs toward my T but only got one. Nevertheless, a fun time and I look forward to next month's sprint.

K6FFY As usual, conditions were terrible on the West coast. However, I had a lot of fun trying.

K8BBM band condx poor, but lots of fun, now up to 97 towards my own C: tnx bill and group 73 K8BBM

WU9F Enjoyed the time spent and had fun. Condx poor at this QTH. Hope to do better in the future. 72, Terry WU9F

K4CZ This was my first SKCC event. Until this weekend, I used my Speed-X key about 3 times in the past two years (including 2 SKNs). My sending was rough at times and I still have trouble with "c" and "z". If you have K4YZ or K4CQ in your log, it's probably me...and my state is NC not NY! Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable event and nice to add some new callsigns to my log...even managed to have a few ragchews with ops late in the evening on Friday. I filled the 100 grids (#100 was my 50th QSO...thanks K5ENA). The Gridlock theme helped keep me busy and motivated during slow periods and the K3UK Sked page was fun and helpful. Thanks for the Qs. 73, Barry

W6UT Another FB Sprint. Worked a number of east coast stations, from ME to FL. Some on 40 as well as 20. Not a signal on 80. Looking forward to next month.

AI4RE Geomagnetic indices pushing from quiet toward unsettled. Solar flux values would map to NEGATIVE smoothed sunspot numbers! I was ready to trade in HF for moonbounce! Most activity seems to be late Sunday afternoon. I can't put in the time to make a serious effort, but put in a few minutes here and there trolling for C's and giving my number away to a few folks.

W9TFC Had lots of fun working the SKCC sprintathon. Keeps getting easier and easier to keep up with the paper work (time, freq, call, name, spc, skcc#, dupe sheet, list of new skcc numbers). Being a rag chewer I never thought I would enjoy contesting but I do like the SKCC contest style. CU at the next sprint or on the bands for a go old rag chew. 73

W5TVW Too many "honey dos" this weekend and other things going on! "Fair" activity here noted. Nothing heard on 15 meters. No time and too much noise on 80 meters here so did not get on there. Maybe a better score next time.

NJ1W Elecraft K2 running 5w to a g5rv up 35 ft.. It was lots of fun es tnx to the guys for taking the time to get my weak signal.

K0IVK I've had my SKCC # since February 06 but this was my 1st Sprint. I've always enjoyed casual contesting, but have given up on most contests, because they have become way too hectic. The sprint is just right for me, it helps me check how the rig is performing, and is just fun, not work. Thanks SKCC. Worked 20M &40M with an IC-775 barefoot, KLM KT34A & Hustler 4BTV.

WB8LSV Had a great time with "Gridlock" Worked quite a few new Numbers - a couple of new C's and 2 new SKCC states.

N1VWD Icom-736
Windom at 30'
Bencher RJ-1 straight key

K5IZO This was my first sprint. I had a good time. I worked a 2 1/2 hours at the beginning (19 QSOs) then off and on. "I'll be back."

K4CNW Had lots of fun but found participation spotty during the hours I had available to operate. I did pick up several new SKCC states. Needed 6 more numbers to complete gridlock. Looking forward to next month!

KJ4TQ What a fun way to celebrate a birthday. I turned 65 while the contest was running. I missed several hours since I had to drive over into the next county and take my mother out because it was her birthday too.
