I got special dispensation(from the XYL not His Holiness} to go camping and play radio. Beautiful weather and full moon to boot. The antenna was a 65 foot wire launched by slingshot method over a tall tree. A like wire was laid on the ground for a counterpoise. A picture would only show the trees. The antenna was tuned by an SG-230 by SGC about 20 years old but still works great. Started with about 6 QSOs on 20M then went to upper 40M which was hopping due to all the RTTY around 7050. The old reliable Kenwood TS-130 became unreliable in a hurry. Output kept dropping to QRP levels and I still made some contacts but it was frustrating.

But, my good friend WB6NOV came to the rescue, he went home and got His TS-440 for me to use. Not only that but when he came back in the morning he brought me coffee and doughnuts! What a guy. He was also psychic; about 9P local 0400Z he said try 20??? Doubtful I went to 20 and worked ZL2BLQ, Stan, and his club ZL2SWR; and then Johnn W1OOO!
A fun event for me for sure, and I finally got enough Cs and Ts!!!!!! Thanks Randy KB4QQJ for number 50.

What an interesting afternoon in our 94 degree weather! Slingshot to get my antenna airborne on pine trees worked with one big problem. The sinkers I was using weren't heavy enough to return to earth due to the sticky pine bark on the limbs at 40 ft! Then I abandoned plan "A" and went to plan "B" for my portable QRP event station.

My initial "new antenna" was to be a 151 foot longwire made of some special bronze and copper alloy braided wire used by the military. It ended up being a total bird's nest of tangles that I spent 90 minutes untangling!!! Then my Jackite pole was too light to handle it as an end fed. So on to plan "C"... a twinlead fed 40m inverted vee on the 20 ft Jackite pole. By this time I only had time to make two quick contacts and head back home for dinner with my wife.

Many lessons learned... great fun. I'll be more prepared next time I get to play.

Hey to all...

I built a special 40m NVIS system for this event...it's up 12ft with a reflecting element laying on the ground under it. Looks like a 2 element bean but shoots straight up.

Toasted a K1 today...took out the 2SC2166 - but threw the other inline fast...so, technically I was still running "a" K1 at 5w.

Thanks for all those with good ears to pull me out of the noise.

Had fun the small amount I could operate with all the other events of the day. Very enjoyable. All qso's on the above 7.100 section of 40 meters. Used my old novice sk and the 1958 Original with less than 1 watt out of the HW8 into "Not my usual ant.", an End Fed random wire fed via the small MFJ tuner and out the window up into tree tops outback! Big thrill to work Paul, NG7Z getting a 579 for 1366 miles per watt! Thanks to all the Mom's out there. CU next month. Kieth wi0s 2048T.

Boy, what a great sprint. Even with Mother's Day activities and grandsons soccer game, I came out with a fairly good score. Not bad for an S&P op. It was nice to see all of the new numbers on the air. Most of my contacts were on 20 and 40 meters with a couple at the end on 80 meters. Hope to see everyone next month. 73, George

Band conditions were exceptionally poor but there was a good turnout of stations. Had a lot of fun as usual. Grand kids were visiting so I could not operate as much as usual but got to show the rig off during a sprint..

I made all but one of my contacts on Saturday night, one Sunday morning. Spent the rest of the day with the YL.

Rig this time TS 2000 at 100 watts into my HB Vertical:

17 feet of galvanized fence pipe with a 102" whip attached to the top with hose clamps, giving me about 25 feet. I found a rubber plastic cap that just slid into the bottom and secured it with screws to insulate it from ground.

Ground was a piece of wire mesh with 14 - 16 foot radials and one 33 foot going to the fence on one side of the yard and 66 foot going to the other side. (fence is wood but has wire square fence to keep the dog in) all wires were connected by just twisting them onto the mesh/fence including the ground side of the coax onto the mesh. The center of the coax got a connector that was secured via a screw.

The antenna was positioned between two trees to conceal it from the HOA and 4 pieces of 100 lb fishing line to support it.

I would say it had excellent receive but only got fair signal reports back. It may have been conditions I suppose. The antenna tuned all but 160m with the TS2K's tuner and showed 2:1 SWR on 20m with out a tuner.

I put together a half sized G5RV for the Sprint and used it for all 55 of my 40 meter contacts. It worked well and brought back memories of when a short G5RV was my only antenna. Will take the new antenna to field day.

Found conditions a little improved this weekend. Managed to work members in 10 different countries in this sprint - a sure sign of our DX membership growth. No new antennas, I used my existing cubical quads. Tnx to all for the qsos.

What a blast! My first SKCC event - man, did it bring back great memories of my Novice days in '62-'63! Only managed a couple of hours' worth, though. I was only able to operate the WES for about 1 hour. I finally got my old Speed-X bug fixed up and working again. Band condx on 20 mtrs were not good making it hard to get out with my QRP rig. It was quite enjoyable working the sprint anyway. I was a bit rusty on the ole' Speed-X though.

My best Sprint to date. I think the "not my usual antenna" may replace my "usual" antenna! Started as a weird sloper/L , about 24 feet sloped then horizontal for 50 feet for 74 ' total. Ran it against my "usual" antenna's ground mounted radials and SCG-230 tuner. Didn't match well on 20 but surprisingly was able to work Stan operating ZL2SWR and Phil KL8DX with the rig throttled back to 30 watts due to the SWR.

QRN was brutal on 40 Saturday night, storms about 250 miles out. 80 was useless.

Sunday morning removed the 50' horizontal section and the remaining 24' matched well on 20. Was able to get Walt LW3EX on 15 with that. Both Stan and Walt were my first Sprint DX. At first I thought it was Walt but checking my list it looks like Don N1LU was my 100th unique contact so I'll be turning in my info for my "C" soon. Cool!

Really enjoyed participating the theme and next month's boatanchor theme is also right up my alley: The Ranger, National, Drakes, & Hallicrafters are really to roll!

I used both my G5RV and new 80m inverted vee fed with 450ohm ladder line. The vee is up higher but on 20m doesn't always perform better, Guess it has some major and minor lobes and using both antennas fill in the gaps. The 80m vee seems to consistantly perform better on 30m and 80m.

In and out all day. Was sneeking away from family chatter for a peak at the bands. Picked up a few each time on 20M. Finished up on 80M, was a bit lonley with my gutter antenna. One leg the front horizontal rain gutter 40' long at 24'. The other the garage gutter 24'long at about 14 feet high. Fed in the middle with #16 twisted to a 4:1 balun. Don't know why but it was resonant at 1.85 MHZ. Loads on most bands with a tuner. Receive signal strength seemed the same as a full size 80M dipole. Lucky for me it was not raining. Used a newly acquired #4 blue racer. With 2 regular weights its 40WPM+ at the low end. With that big stainless weight the low end is just a little under 20 WPM.

Didn't have time to put up a different antenna so just used my normal home brew vertical made with a Hamstick. Icom 703+ at 10 Watts and ChiCom Army K5 key.

20 Meters was in fairly useable shape and 40 was crowded here in Upstate SC.

I enjoyed the WES while operating portable from my hotel in San Antonio. I was running 5 watts with my Icom 703. The dipole for my hotel QTH is cut for 40 meters. It is fed up and into the room with 1/8 wave length (at 40 meters) of 300 ohm ladder-line. Then, I have a 4 to 1 balun and coax to the IC 703. The internal tuner allowed me to work 40 and 20 meters for the WES. It also tunes up on 15 and 10 meters. So far I am getting away with the 66 foot antenna outside my room. Great Fun!

Another fun WES. I had must less time to operate this month, about seven hours total. But it was still great fun!

Nice to see several SKCC QRP brethren in the mix. Nice job Bob (VE3AKV) on NVIS and single band - definitely something to shoot for in upcoming events.

Also nice to see a few guys out there with creative hats on for 'unusual' antennas ;). Way to go Jeff (K9JP).

I couldn't spend a lot of time this month due to other commitments. But 4.7 hours and 103 Q's isn't bad showing. Seems I worked several calls which were not in previous logs. I sure hope they post their logs here. I never heard K0LUW this time but might have missed him. Great showing of SKCC'ers this month and hope the turnout increases. Equipment here for the two bands was a Force12 C3 and Cushcraft 2 el shorty forty. Radio is an Icom 756 Pro 3. CU next month 73 Paul NG7Z

This was my first WES but not my last. The ant. idea was brilliant. Worked my 7 on a home brew vertical hidden in a palm tree for my home owners assoc. 33 feet of 14 gauge wire tire wrapped to a wal-mart golf ball retriever tool stuck up into the top of a palm tree. Worked so well I'm going to get some PVC and make a "permanent" portable ant out of it. I had a great time, picked up a new state, got 7 new numbers. I counted the numbers and now that I have 40 numbers I am getting the "C" but. I'm starting to think "C" by my birthday next Saturday weather, bands, and "she who must be obeyed" will. Thanks again guys, this was a great experience. 73 and best of luck in the next SKS and WES.

Twenty meters was pretty good today. I worked seven countries plus US, Canada and Alaska. I think we will see some good scores in this one. Forty was ok last night, but 80 was not so good. Both were very noisy. I was able to work LW3EX on ten and fifteen, but Walt was the only station I could raise on these bands.

Not a bad WES at all, but we need to have a serious talk with whoever scheduled Mother's Day on WES Sunday.

I only operated 3 hours on Saturday night. I recently got a Drake T4XC to go with my R4C and decided to use them this WES with the vertical antenna. I was short on connecting cables, so I operated in the separate position, and had to zero beat each time I called someone. I like using the simpler rigs.( Not sure they were that simple, we had to peak the drive and dip the final on each band. & No Ant Tuner, No Keyer.) Actually the R4C receives great for a 30 year old RX, & fortunately it has the 250Hz filter. Next WES plan to use the old HT37.

Bands were horrible here. I never heard much on 40 meters so I stuck to 20. Most of my operation was on Sunday morning / afternoon. I was hoping to have a few "new to me" antenna's up to participate in the theme but I'm still waiting on a few things to be delivered. Despite the poor band conditions I was able to work more than expected. Highlights were many and everything worked well at my station. The local power company recently changed out my transformer so the bands are quieter now. At least now my pre-amps amplify signals instead of noise. Summer is not far away and I'm looking forward to getting started on a few antenna projects. 12 non-members worked with one working me on a SK and telling me he will be joining SKCC! Thanks to everyone who worked me and sorry to any I missed. I missed Alaska but snagged Gene, KL7GLL, so that almost counts, right Gene? I sure enjoy the slower pace and friendliness of these Sprint's. I never did work Martin but I did manage a few contacts over the pole otherwise. Thanks to all those that make this and all the Sprint's possible!!

If the lack of sunspots were not enough, once again we had a solar wind event to deal with. Conditions not too great out west, heard very little east of the Missippi River. 40 and 80 were absolutely worthless Saturday night. Had several lost/incomplete QSOs, but did manage a total of 25. And that required a whole lot of CQ calling!

I had replaced my end fed antenna with a slighlty longer one made from black speaker wire for stealth. The previous one made with clear insulated speaker wire glistened too much when exposed to the Sun. I replaced the old length of RG-58 with RG-8X. On the antenna feedpoint end of the coax I rolled up an 'Ugly Balun' on a piece of PVC. I was pleasantly surprised that it eliminated most of my RFI problems, hope that means more RF out from the antenna. The rig's autotuner can this antenna on 80m thru 12m. Still a bit of RFI on 40 and 20 meters, of course it would be the two bands I use the most! I hope the conditions are better for the upcoming SKS.

Fun! This WES really gave my J-37 a workout, and the theme was great. I put more time into splicing wire scraps for my 117' doublet than my total TIC (time in chair). It works well 80-10, so it will become my "usual" antenna when I'm visiting Dad in Wisconsin.
My apologies to the half-dozen stations who repeatedly answered my CQ, but were never quite strong enough to pull out of the S-7 noise. Last month, I was QRP with a low antenna, so I can sympathize with your frustration.
I want to mention, with appreciation, the courtesy and skill of the operators I heard this weekend. Hopefully, no one else experienced anything less. 73

The WES started out great and there was some activity on 20 meters, I had a new antenna up and ready to go. Then Murphy struck! My key would automatically send dits at about 30 wpm, no dahs. I took the key apart to clean the contacts and check connections and the spring flew off under the desk. Found the spring, put the key back together; still no dahs, just dits. About 30 minutes later I discovered that the lead wire was cracked (solid conducter). At this point 20 meters was gone. I switched to 40 meters and had some success until a cold front ushered in thunderstorms and heavy rain. At that point I stopped for the night. I tried again in the wee hours but I think everyone was napping. Still great fun. 73.

Another great WES with some great operators. The weather and other activities did not allow time for a special antenna so I decided to use my Vibroplex and share a photo. I have used hints from "Extend A Dot" and SKCC members to modify the key to allow a good speed range. The K-S engineering 7/32 x .014 brass tube slips on the weight rod, an 8-32 screw threaded into the tube holds the two weights.
The key dates to 1944. Thanks to everyone for a fun weekend.

Not so good for me this time. I worked the first hour and got sick and had to go to bed. Got up early and worked a few more, but had to quit to go visit Mom. Came home, got sick again. Mid afternoon, I tried again and worked a few more. I realized that I had to quit while trying to QSO with G4ELZ while calling Ralph into a garbage can. I did complete that QSO!

I wanted to get on the air so bad, after all the effort I put into building a 40 meter Delta loop. The few contacts I made with it all got 5NN, except one 579. I used 2 keys this time, the Amplidan for QRS and the LTA sideswiper for the faster ops. LW3EX was cooking with his cootie for 2 bands 2x sideswiper QSO's. Walt had a great signal on 10 meters!

My loop is nearly vertical. I feed it at the bottom corner with a 23 foot Q section of RG59 coupled to RG8X going to the rig. The center conductor was fed to the vertical part of the Delta. No tuner needed for the entire 40 meter CW band. In time, I plan to make some improvements to the loop and might keep it!

The "DRAGON" is an ACE/HOME-DEPO coil made from 2 1/2" dia sched 40 pipe with 106 turns of 16 guage steel copper clad wire, set on 3 legs of 3/4" elect conduit pipe, bent at 45 degs. Top whip is 8'-6" Mil spec antenna. Eight ground radials are cut 1/4 wave 40M (33'-5") attached in bike spoke configuration.
All contacts were made with this antenna from AK KL8DX TO NY KC2KT, RST's ranged from 339 to 599.
Great portable Antenna and it WKS GREAT!

Thanks for selecting me as special op. Condx weren't great but still better than expected. SFI=72 is better than what we are used to lately...
As special op I felt the obligation to do lots od CQ calling. My technique was to run the QSO on a German Junker key using the right hand. For the cq calling I used the same key with the left hand for qrs and a HiMound BK-100 (low cost bug).

In the spirit of Marconi and his Kite Antenna.
I flew 130' of wire attached via 100' string to a 4.5' helium balloon, 1 mega-ohm resistor to control static, and 4 130' radials. Hoping for fair weather was a bust. The Marconi was really a sloper after wind effect LOL. It flew about a 45° angle. But it worked well Saturday night. Bands seemed in better condition than of recent WES's. Sunday brought lightening storms so I used a modified set of mobile verticals on a camera tripod out back. Had a great time. Heard a lot of new members and only a few regulars. That's a good thing. One dupe, sorry Dan, my bad in the last minutes. This is a keeper theme, I look forward to more events of this type.
Strongest signal was Jack, K4CNW at 40 over. Very nice signal Jack.

Thanks to all participants for a great WES. For 20 and 15 meters I used a "bamboo beam" constructed with two 24 ft elements spaced 8 ft apart and mounted on 6 each 44 inch fiberglass mast pieces for about 22 ft of height. A tuner was needed to match the antenna (fed with 300 ohm balanced line) to the transceiver. This is my normal antenna for these bands until a tower is completed.

We used this WES as a special event club outing for the
Radio Central Amateur Radio Club. Participating operators were
Dick - K2RFP, Jerry - K2PAY, and Neil - KC2KY.

We operated from our home QTHs in the early hours then set up
a station in the historic Marconi Shack in Rocky Point, NY.

Dick tried a 40m wire vertical at his home QTH and made a half
dozen contacts with it. He likes his 80m loop better. He also
built an 80 m dipole but discovered that the two trees to hang
it from were too close so that was never used.

Neil, built a W5GI mystery antenna and got one QSO with it
before the 40 mph winds made a break in a connection someplace.
The jury is still out on that antenna and will be tried again.

Our fall-back antenna was a 40/20 fan dipole that Dick built
and has been proven to be good portable antenna for use at the
Marconi shack.

A fun time was had by all.


This is a 40/20m dipole we used for some of our QSOs. First QSO was with IK2RMZ.

I built a 40m wire vertical by soldering 34 ft of wire to the center terminal
of an SO-239 connector and four 34 foot wires as a counterpoise to the ground
of the SO-239. 100 ft of coax made the connection to the radio. That was simple.
The difficult part was getting the wire up into a tree. I didn't want to use
a sling shot, or a bow and arrow, or a casting rod. I used a rock on a string
because that is all I'd use if I was going to take this antenna along on a
backpacking hike to do some QRP with my KX-1. My radio tuned it on both 40
and 20 and I made several contacts on each band. Overall it is not as good as
my regular 80m loop.

Since I needed a break from radio and computer programming I decided to make a
spool for my 40m vertical. I cut two 8-inch disks from 1/8-inch craft plywood
and glued on some spacer blocks made from 3/4 inch pine. Then I cut the disk
with the spacers into three pieces and glued them to the other disk. One photo
shows two of the three pieces glued in place. The final photo shows the SO-239
in place with the wires in the slots and wound on the spool. Also shown is my
toss up rock.

I didn't have a chance to try out a new antenna. But I still did great on the good ol' inverted vee. Band conditions were awesome in Alabama on 40M near the end of the sprint. You would answer a cq 2 times out of 3 and find yourself doubling with someone. Almost all signals were 599. Also worked England on 20M. Thanks, Jeff-G4ELZ, for the QSO, and I'll drop you a QSL via the buro. Please put me one in too.

It was fun seeing all the different antennas the guys were using.

I put up a “not my usual” antenna the Friday afternoon before the WES. It’s a classic 40 meter ¼ wave ground plane wire vertical suspended from an overhanging tree limb, with four elevated radials sloping from about 15 feet high at the feed point to 8 feet high at the ends. I included a ferrite bead choke balun at the feed point. Radiator and radials were cut to 34’ 0”, and my analyzer showed it was resonant (Z=45+j0 ohms) at 7.060 MHz, with SWR under 1.1:1 from 7.000 to 7.150 and under 1.7:1 at 7.300 MHz. It also measured under 1.5:1 SWR from 21.000 to 21.450, although the radiation angles will be higher and “lobey” on 15 M.

Compared to my 200 foot “vee”-configured doublet fed with 300 ohm ladder line via an MFJ balanced tuner, on receive the vertical was noticeably noisier and did not receive quite as well on most signals. However, perhaps 10f the time the vertical was better, probably because the signal fell into a null on the doublet. The very first QSO with the vertical was with Ron, AC2C about an hour into the sprint. Of course the sprint was not the time to be asking for comparative signal reports, but more than a dozen other QSOs yielded generally good reports, so it seems to get out OK. I also used it for a couple of 15 meter QSOs, including Walt, LW3EX. All in all a fun project but probably not worth the effort since the doublet generally works better.

Commitments to family and friends limited my operating time, but the upper section of 40M was good Saturday evening despite a lot of QRN and 20M was busy Sunday PM. Even had one QSO on 10M with KA1SAW. He was 519 from about 20 miles away. (Actually, a “1” is generous.......).

Very interesting Sprint. I built a modified windom that I had to take down and put back up due to rain. It did work better than the dummy load but not by much. At least I have a nice 4:1 balun I can use for my next project.
