Soapbox

N9QU Operated by: Leo

Lots of time off the air waiting out the T storms. Other than that band conditions were up and down. Had several QSOs lost to QSB, QRN or both. Looking forward to better band conditions. Had fun. 73 & tnx to all.

N9FC Operated by: John

MORE STORMS COMING AFTER 11" OF RAIN.
LOTS OF NOISE ON 40M
ALOT OF FUN ANYWAY.
John

AB3AP Operated by: Mike

Conditions were poor Saturday evening, but were much better Sunday. I even made a couple 17m contacts - no, I didn't count them for WES. :-)

Biggest disappointment: answering W5KID but him not hearing me. Maybe next time!

Once again, a lot of fun!

KC6ZZT Operated by: Joe

More fun. Only use J-38 straight key here.
Propagation can change so fast, within moments clarity or nothing.
I'm learning to live with the AGC off; easier to work weaker stations. Heard K9SKC a few times, but too weak to QSO.
PS, It's always hard to find a regular QSO in the first few hours after a contest! ;-)
73 es GUD DX!

W4FOA Operated by: Tony

Had a great time. Some very strong signals and very good sounding straight keys and bugs. Congrats to all. 73 Tony

AD5VC Operated by: Dana

Most of my operating was in conjunction with operating W5KID as part of Museum Ships on the Air. I can claim I worked where there was a REAL boatanchor.... one on each side of the bow... but my rig was a Tentec Jupiter. Worked a couple of new ops and one returning after an absence from ham radio. Had a great time.

KH6OZ Operated by: George

Thanks to all who put that extra effort into copying my
weak signal especially KJ7BS Mark 10M/15M. Thanks John (VK4TJ) for anwering my 5w CQ. First time I've worked Australia QRP.
I just about fell out of my chair when I heard his callsign.
It was fun.
73's to all.

N6EV Operated by: Paul

Once again, lots of fun. Wish the bands would cooperate better. High noise levels. Remember to check 10 meters / 10 meter beacons guys! There were plenty of openings on 10 to be had! Worked several non-members asking what SKS was. Informed them of the club. SKS is a great recruiting tool! That's how I found SKCC!

Key used this month: Signal Electric Spark Key

Till next month.. 73!
Paul N6EV SKCC 3358C / FISTS 1407

W5KID Operated by: Dana

Operated in conjunction with Museum Ships on the Air. A total of 26 contacts with CW this weekend, and I was pleased to have 7 SKCC members in that list.

W4CU Operated by: Tom Schaeffer

Had a great time. Thanks to all. 73 - Tom

K9SKC/K0LUW Operated by: Russ

Got a late start because of the weather - lots of qrn - poor band conditions - but still a lot of fun.

Rig: Icom 756 Pro 3
Antennae: 80m - dipole at 38ft
40m - phased vertical array aimed east-west
20m - 5/8 wave vertical dipole
15m - use one of the 40m verticals
10m - use one of the 40m verticals with tuner (poor)
I generally use 2 antennae on receive with a MJF-1025 noise canceller.

N2JNZ Operated by: George

Had a good time QRP with lousy condx !! Many thanks to all who bended an ear to get me !! Enjoyed using the K1 very much !!

K5GQ Operated by: Mark

Some signals were 359 difficult to copy. And there were a few that were strong enough to copy fine.

Look forward to next time.

Band conditions were lousy.

WB8SDA Operated by: Carmen

Things were pretty quiet here in Northeast Ohio. Conditions seemed strange, plus the fact I was only running 5 watts. Still had a blast.

LW3EX Operated by: Walt

Band conditions were rough but great sounding fists heard
Had a great time doing the WES, fun event as always.
Thank you all very much.
73, Walt - ..-

K4CNW Operated by: Jack

The AT-1 & SW-54 work but didn't fire them up because I don't have any crystals that are near the SKCC frequencies. Enjoyed the time time I had to operate. It was nice to hear so many of the newer members in the WES.

HeathKit AT-1 & National SW-54 (First Rig -1955)

KG4W Operated by: Ed

Worked off/on in SKS from 8:30am Sun till the end. Was nice to work KS, IL, VA & LU on ten mtrs!!! around 1730-1800Z.
Tried 80 mtrs during last 30 min & was slim pickins there.
73.....Ed KG4W

K6FFY Operated by: Nick

Another great Weekend Sprintathon, and thanks to NT9K log
submission could not be more simple.

KC8HKI Operated by: Nick

Operated with my TS-830s. Sorry about the repeats - band conditions were horrid. Heard lots of very weak stations try to make the contact, but few actually made it. Only played in the contest for a few hours here and there. It's funny how frightened I am to call CQ still - although, once I get going, I'm fine! The more contacts I make, the faster I am getting! 73 -Nick

W5EAC Operated by: Alan

Thanks to all who make this possible. Non-SKCC Hams don't know what they're missing.

NE7D Operated by: Rock

Haven't been active recently and only had a half hour Sunday morning, but still fun. Was going to just see who was on 20M, but Paul N6EV QSY'd me up to 10M just to prove it was open. Was in line to work Russ K9SKC on 20, but had to run. Station is Motorola FT-1000MP Mark-V Field and Speiderbeam with my old novice Ameco key. BTW, love RFP's Mini Logger!

K9MMS Operated by: Gary

Many of the signals were weak and in the noise. Difficult copy on many QSOs. No QSOs on 80 -- very noisy and almost no activity heard. Forty and 20 were about it. Did manage one QSO on 10 (WA1LWS) and three QSOs on 15 (WA1LWS, KB4QQJ, and K9SKC / K0LUW). Thanks to Russ for K9SKC two-fers on 4 bands.

VK4TJ answered one of my CQs on 20, but I just could not copy enough to make a QSO.

My old, Original bug still needs more work -- still scratchy at times -- sorry for that. So, minimal use of the bug again.

Thanks for the QSOs. 73, Gary

AI4AW Operated by: Chris

It was a great contest. A lot of weak signals though. Couldn't tell who had a boatanchor or not. I operated with modern equipment as that as all I have, except for my straight key and bug.

Chris

AF2Z Operated by: Drew

Sat evening was very poor condx as 20m was out and 80m was very noisy. So, made only ten contacts on 40 meters. On Sunday had to quit early but managed contacts on five bands during the morning, 80 thru 10: thanks Cookie K5EWJ (15m) and Bill NT9K (10m). First time I've worked 10m in a SKCC sprint, i think. My rig: Elecraft K2 @ 15 watts, 100' endfed wire up 30'; Junker straight key. -- 73, Drew

AD5QB Operated by: Ken

IC718 at 30 watts to attic dipole. Heard K9SKC on 15, 20 and 40 but couldn't make him hear me. Finally got "agn?" from him on 40, but then time ran out and sprint was over. GOT to get an outside antenna up again, kicking around some stealth ideas. Be back next Sprint. 73 Ken AD5QB #9C

K1ULF/P Operated by: Ulf

I brought the Small Wonder labs SW+40m rig with me out camping for the second time this weekend. Nice surprise that it was SKS going on. I turned it on the at about 10.40pm and the first I heard blasting in was K9SKC/Russ calling CQ and exchanging info with Randy. Next time he answered my call and I got my first two entries. I got three more over the next hour plus finishing up at about 00.15 local time when I almost fell a sleep while calling CQ. Takes it toll to be out in the sun the whole day. In any case I had a great evening.

AC2C Operated by: Ron

I could not pick out any obvious older transmitters.
It was a good sprint and I had a lot of fun.

KA3CTQ Operated by: Dan

Great to be back on the air even if it is in a borrowed shack.

Had to take my Dad's Bencher paddles and by-passed the keyer to use as a side-swiper. I can't wait to have my shack back up and running.

K6JF Operated by: Jim

Bands were quiet noise-wise, but the active QSB made things interesting. Sigs could change from S9 to gone in a heartbeat. Where was the East Coast? Worked mostly the western states an some midwest. Did pick up W4FOA in GA. Two new states and nine new numbers, closing in on my Centurion.

K5EWJ Operated by: Cookie

This was a pretty strange WES. I made 10 contacts on 10 meters and 8 contacts on 15 meters, but 20 never really opened up. Of the 49 QSOs that I made 28 were with Tribunes and 4 with Centurions. It seems like a lot of folks sat this one out and mostly the hard core participated.

KL7GLL Operated by: Gene

Wrkd lots of new Members I'd not heard before; great activity with most Qs on 20 & 40; only 1 each on 80 & 15. Generally good propagation, but not much from Far West. Wonderful to hear bandwidth filled with "SKS" Personal best score for me with more time devoted than usual. A fun time, as always.

K1NV Operated by: Jon

Strange conditions overall. Lots of QRN from storms in the east. Twenty meters was rather poor this month. I heard nothing on 15 and 10 meters.
QSO's were divided between 20 and 40 meters with only three contacts on 80 meters.
It was a surprise to hook up with VK4TJ and LW3EX on 20M and a bigger surprise to work HC2AD on 40 meters while the sun was well above the horizon here. KH6G was not very strong into the west. K9SKC/K0LUW was worked on three bands.

WA6L Operated by: John

I wish I had more time to work the sprint, but had a great time while on the air. Many great Fists out there and a very friendly group! Thanks to VK4TJ for his patience during bad QSB and to LW3EX for the nice DX contact. I look forward to seeing you all again next month. 73, John.

KB4QQJ Operated by: Randy

Best conditions yet! Worked 10 stations on the Drake TR4-C (not scored). It was really strange to hear, "awesome signal". This was a WES of "firsts" for me. First sprint I got to work K9SKC on 4 bands
Allan HC2AD was the first DX contact on the Drake in 15 years, I could have used that multi too! First SKCC contact on 17 meters( no score). Thanks Kaz K8KS. First time I've been QRO in a SKCC event.
A Special Thanks goes to AD5VC/W5KID Dana, and his effort on board the USS Kidd.
Strongest signal goes to AI4AW Chris at 40 over! Even the weak signals this time were 559! I didn't have to ask for one single repeat. 73 to All, and Thanks for a great Sprint!
Randy

The Lights came on and everybody was Home!!

VK4TJ Operated by: John

What a frustrating experience! Stations I was copying 579 were not hearing me at all. I found out later that much of USA was in the grip of torrential rain & electrical storms, so maybe that explains it. Guys and gals - if you do have directional antennae, please point them this way from time to time, and do practice copying weak Morse. It is a skill, just like sending, and needs to be brushed up on from time to time. There is a whole nother layer of stations to be worked below the "5NN" crowd, but you need to be prepared to work for them!

NT9K Operated by: Bill

I wasn't able to run my boat anchor, but had a big time working the sprint. My beam is still broken, so I plugged along with my rusty slinkies. I had a pretty good score this time mostly due to me calling cq instead of only S&P. I had a few nice runs on 15 meters and a half a dozen qso's on 10 meters.

Propagation was strange to say the least. This was the first sprint that 40 meters was not the work horse band for me. I got to work some new members and some old friends. I didn't hear very many slow guys this time. Special thanks to Russ for K9SKC on 4 bands and for his efforts to run the club call.

I used 9 different keys in the sprint. I play my own games. When I hear someone on a bug, I use the bug. If I know they use a cootie, I switch to mine. If they swing, I swing. All in all, this was one of the most fun sprints so far.

I had a great time even with the thunder storms and poor conditions. It was nice to see openings on 10 and 15. See you next month. 73, George

KC9CS Operated by: Bill

I had a lot of fun in my 1st Sprint. Apologies to all who had to endure my developing (?) bug fist using my homebrew bug. Might have the shared 'shortest distance QSO' record with W4CU , Tom...who is probably within about 3 miles distance from me!

K0IVK Operated by: Joe

At around 22:30 UTC I was checking the band and equipment in preparation for the Sprint, I heard a weak signal on 14,052 it was JY4NE in Ammon, Jordan. I was able to work him barefoot with my trap vertical. During the Sprint, 20 and 40 were very strange, One minute cndx would be open-next minute dead. Began QSO with K5ENA, less than 200 mi away in OK on 20m, He was S9 +30db then QSB took him to S7 on the next xmission. Half the time both 20 and 40 were completely dead here. Never heard a single signal on 80M.
As always though, I enjoyed the Sprint.

KD5MMM Operated by: Phil

bands did not seem to good here, but I got a few.
Enjoyed it, 73 all

Did not hear any boat anchors, but lots of good fists and sure was alot of fun. First time working any DX during one of the sprints. Also the first time working the club call too!

Always a good time!

Again, not enough time to operate in WES. Hopefully, I was able to give the "T" out to some deserving SKCC'ers.
Enjoyable, even for the limited time I was able to operate.
