Follow-on to Centurion: TRIBUNE

PROPOSAL

I mentioned this on the list a while ago and wonder if there is any interest in going for another level beyond Centurion. This would be a very difficult level to achieve and I wouldn't expenct anyone to be inducted any time soon. But I would like to get it rolling if there is enough interest.

The idea of Tribune comes from the ancient Roman military organizational structure. A Centurion lead 60 to 100 soldiers. A Tribune lead 50 to 60 Centurions.

Here's my thoughts... remember, I said it will be difficult to achieve:

1) SKCC Tribune is awarded for making 50 Centurion contacts.

2) You must already be a Centurion for the contact to count. For instance, working a Centurion while you are still working towards your Centurion does not count towards Tribune.

3) No contacts prior to the formal announcement of this new program will count towards Tribune.

4) Contacts with a Centurion only count once, not once per band.

Comments welcome.

I LIKE this idea a lot. As I'm approaching Centurion, I've begun wondering what comes next. This would be great. The Centurions are some of the more active folks so collecting 50 may be easier than it sounds (but harder than you think).

Kewl! I like it.

Does this mean Centurions will now have to send SKCC # 2240 C # 56? Working 50 Centurions vs logging 50 Centurions require different exchanges. Simply working 50 Centurions requires an exchange of SKCC # 2240C, to log 50 Centurions requires logging the Centurion number as well.

I'm not sure... do we really have to collect the Centurion number? I'm not against this but the FISTS exchange (FISTS NR 11712 CC 1798) is kind of long. Maybe it is enough to indentify yourself as a Centurion (SKCC 605C)?

Maybe I could send SKCC NR 605C4?

I'm game for about anything so if this is what people want... this is what people get!

This sounds like a great next step. Something higher to achieve is good.

I would thing that the Centurion number would not be necessary. The SKCC number with C on the end, i.e. 2338C (I hope soon), should be good enough.

I guess we can verify Centurian by callsign. That works.

The "C" at the end of the number would be the verification right? Maybe I see your point... you need the SKCC number from each operator to get your Centurion. You are saying you should need the Centurion number for each operator to get Tribune.

It does make sense. It was just an arbitrary (silly) line I drew so it didn't seem too much of a number chase. But it is, isn't it?

I've had a few QSOs with Fists/SKCC members where it seemed 50% of the QSO was sending numbers back and forth.

I like it!

I think skcc # followed by C (57C) would be enough.

Lets just.

OK, I'm going to send a note to Gordon (managing Centurion) and ask him if he wants to manage this or wants one of us manage it. That's assuming he's OK with the plan.

I he wants one of us to take it I'll either run it from here or help one of you run it. Anyone want to snap it from me?

Does this mean that Tom is Emperor???

Postby kb4t » Wed Feb 07, 2007 5:37 pm

Let's see.... Centurion...Tribune... Is Senator next followed by Emperor?

I'm sensing a theme here.

I like the idea. I think the band endorsements are tough to achieve for the average ham. Finding 100 SKCC members on some bands is downright difficult.

The Tribune achievement will be even tougher so it's clearly worthy. Finding Centurions, even though they are (allegedly) more active can be very, very diffiuclt.

Of course, the lucky folks who can operate for many hours each day will snap this one up quickly, I'm sure! ! ! ! :D

I suspect the Senator achievement will be 50 Centurions worked on 5 bands. Whaddya think???

Kevin: You have enough to do. :!: I could easily handle the Tribune achievement recordkeeping and announcements and will be glad to do it. It will dovetail nicely with some of the other things I'm doing now for SKCC. So, if Gordon & Tom approve of the achievement and you don't want to "manage" it, I'll gladly do so.

I've not heard back from Gordon yet. You are welcome to take the new Tribune program on. From this point on, I'll make suggestions but leave the decisions to you.

One thing I would like to see is that we start from a clean slate. No contacts count before the plan is implemented. Also, no contacts count before the person achieves Centurion. I would like to see this as a tough but doable challenge. It should not be a gimme.

Here's hoping Gordon goes along with the concept. I didn't contact Tom as Gordon runs Centurion. I'm sure he'll talk with Tom about it if he feels it is necessary.

QSL!

Postby kb4t » Wed Feb 07, 2007 6:33 pm

Kev:

QSL on the new achievement's management.

I await Gordon and/or Tom's blessing.

I agree about the "starting point" for the new achievement. I suggest a 1 March 07 start date just so folks can ruminate and comment on the idea. Sort of work up a lather and start foaming at the key.

Tribune award

Postby k8jd » Sat Feb 10, 2007 4:47 pm

I brought up a new level of awards on the forum some time ago when there were only a few dozen Centurions. Good to see it coming into light again!
Have heard some using the # followed by a C lately, in non SKC QSOs and now I will start doing this also.
Happy hunting.

I don't think the new program will be starting until 1 March. We discussed not allowing any previous contacts and contact previous to becoming a Centurion to count towards the new award.

Frank will have the "official" details for us shortly I think.

Should be a real challenge.

Tribune

Postby kc5gxl » Tue Feb 13, 2007 6:56 am

Hello all;

I think that the Tribune award is great, but I think that the contacts necessary to achieve it is way low. I suggest that instead of 50 contacts we make it 500 contacts. gasp, choke, gulp! But Dan you say, we don't have 500 centurians yet. Ah, that's my point. We need more centurians to advance further up the food chain.

If we were to need only 50 centurian contacts, centurian to centurian, then the opening day (March 1?) of that award will be filled with centurians trying to find other centurians to get a low number. On the other hand, if we make the tribune 500 centurian to centurian contacts, we will not have 45 tribunes on March 2nd, but we will have several more centurians.

Just a thought. As usual, YMMV
