Hi Dave, when I first started making keys, I used to strip the contact out of big old used relays. Now, I buy them usually from a tattoo supply or pinball supply vendor.

You can buy them from Vibroplex, but they charge about 20 times too much.
Hope this helps, Bill..

Dave, what do you plan to use them on? Straight key, bug?
I like .25 or 1/4" diameter contacts on my straight keys, but .125 or 1/8th diameter for bugs. Good luck with your key. Please let us know how it turns out. I'd love to see pictures. If I can ever be of any help, let me know.

FYI, there is a forum where the keymakers hang out. It isn't very busy and not many posts, but the posts are high quality, hi.

I'm thinking of using sterling silver hollow rivets, such as:
https://www.beaducation.com/zen_product ... -16-rivets
Shank diameter of 1/16", head diameter under 3/16". 20 assorted length rivets, $14.70.

My other option was to use dead-soft silver wire and form it into a round-head rivet. This would probably be too soft to survive long-term use though.

Any thoughts?

THe hollow sterling silver rivets the leather workers use are a pretty good sub for the real thing. We have to get them a thousand at a time.
