K3Y Prizes

Postby AC2C » Sat Feb 20, 2010 4:37 pm

The K3Y Prize committee has completed the first random drawing from a "hat" containing the callsigns of the 119 members who operated a K3Y area station.

The winning member is Jim Fraser, K6JF, SKCC #4261T who has been contacted and has chosen to receive the LTA Model BBMO Gold Plated Cootie key donated to the prize committee by Tom, K9TB, SKCC #2953.

For all future drawings, each member selected will be given a choice between a new SKCC NT9K Pump Key or the 250 SKCC Color QSL cards. The first member to choose the QSL Cards will receive the gift card and all subsequent winners will not have to choose.

The prize committee faced a problem of how to perform a completely blind random drawing of callsigns from a "hat" where it would be possible for a committee member to be drawn. Without going into extreme details, I am glad to list the basic concept:
1. Two committee members independently created the "tickets" to be placed into the "hat".
2. The independently created lists were then exchanged and agreed to.
3. Since there were a total of 119 unique callsigns, each "ticket" was numbered from 1 to 119.
4. A PDF version of the numbered list was posted and shared with all members of K3Y prize committee.
5. We decided to use the "persistent identifier" option available through Random.org to generate a random sequence of numbers from 1 to 119.
6. The "persistent identifier" to be used was decided to be the name of the winning horse in the first race at Aqueduct at a race a few days in the future.

This methodology worked well for us and we intend to use a similar methodology for the remaining drawings which will represent every member who participated in the K3Y anniversary activities. Since that drawing will consist of several thousand "tickets" we will need to do a test run of our processes.

Please watch the K3Y prize webpage carefully over the coming weeks.

This coming weekend, the K3Y Planning Committee will hold a drawing to pick winners of the remaining prizes. We have at least six of the new SKCC NT9K Pump Keys, and one Gift Certificate for 250 color SKCC QSL Cards to be given away to lucky members.

The committee has created all of the tickets to be in the drawing "hat" by working with the finalized 2010 K3Y Log File. We looked at only call signs that had logged a QSO with a K3Y Area station and performed the following steps:
1. Deleted all K3Y callsigns.
2. Stripped each call to it's most basic form - deleting /M, /QRP, and various prefixes and suffixes.
3. We then sorted by call and K3Y area and deleted duplicates - keeping a maximum of one entry per call for each K3Y area logged.
4. We eliminated club callsigns as these will be personal awards.
5. We merged those members who changed call signs during the event and also merged those members we could identify who had more than one callsign.

The finalized list of 7,201 "tickets in the hat" has been shared among all of the Area Coordinators and SKCC Management. The drawing will be made using a random sequence generated on Saturday using the name of a winning horse in a Friday race - Race #1 at Aqueduct. Thus we have generated and shared the list and will make a drawing based on the outcome of a future event.

Please do not ask to see the final drawing list - we have gone through incredible efforts to make sure that we did not inadvertently leave off anyone that might be eligible. However, we also know that all log entries were essentially hand-entered and typos can and do occur. We have repeatedly requested that you check the online logs and grid search and bring any misses to our attention. We received one reply to that request and fixed the missing log entry. We have worked hard to make this drawing as fair, unbiased, and open as possible and request that you put your trust in the K3Y team that worked very hard so you could have a very enjoyable January anniversary event.

Be watching the K3Y prize page this weekend and into early next week. We know that there are many non-member callsigns in the hat and will carefully examine each callsign drawn to determine eligibility.

Winning members will be listed on the K3Y Prize Web Page and will need to contact the event coordinator (AC2C) to select their prize.

If, for whatever reason, you used more than one callsign during the K3Y event, then speak up now. Send me a personal email so we can adjust the list prior to the drawing.

Thanks to all for making the 2010 K3Y Anniversary Celebration the best ever !

Hear Ye !!! Hear Ye !!! Let there be celebration and revelry.

Gather 'round to hear the news of the day.

With the very binary-friendly results from the New Jersey Lottery, the K3Y Prize Committee has completed the random blind drawing and has confirmed the results.

The current K3Y Prize fund will allow us to give away seven of the new SKCC NT9K Pump Keys, including shipping within the 48 Contiguous United States, plus the Gift Certificate for 250 Color SKCC QSLs Cards from CheapQSLs.

The following members, in the order listed, are the first eight Members whose calls were drawn from the "hat" using the random sequence generated by Random.org:

1. K5UI, SKCC #2980, Jim in Texas
2. N4RE, SKCC #942T, Rick in North Carolina
3. KO1E, SKCC #6090, Dave in Rhode Island
4. W9DLN, SKCC #3635T, Dan in Wisconsin
5. AA2YK, SKCC #960, Ernie in New York

7. N8XE, SKCC #3806T, Jason in Ohio
8. WA1RKS, SKCC #931, Ellis in New York

These members are requested to contact the K3Y Event coordinator via email as soon as possible and state your prize choice - NT9K Pump Key or QSL Cards. Requests will be filled in the order listed above.

This announcement will also be listed on the SKCC Forum and the winners will also be listed on the K3Y Prize Page.

If, for whatever reason, we are unable to hand out the awards within two weeks, we will draw more tickets from the "hat".

CONGRATULATIONS to all the prize winners !!!
