SKCC QRP night

PostPosted: Sat Jan 27, 2007 5:10 am
I am picking up on a suggestion made by one of our fine members who mentioned having a QRP night. I think the original suggestion was once a week. Would anybody be interested in such a activity?

Michael, I would participate in a QRP event. I have a program that cross referrences the skcc member list to the naqcc member list. Last time I looked nearly 300 people belonged to both clubs. I think alot of people would join in.

I like this idea because of its educational possibilities. It opens up new worlds to so many people. Learning operating skills, propagation, building or just something new. Lately the yahoo posts on gutter antennas and crystals for Rockmites, hopefully will end up in posts to this forum where we can learn from each other

QRP is fun. I didn't know how much fun until I tried it. I bet it would be fun to load up my gutter or chain link fence, but I never tried it. Adding a QRP night just gives us another choice.

What's the difference between this and NAQCC? If we do it, it should be constructed to be different than the regular NAQCC events. Otherwise we could just have folks take part in the existing NAQCC events.

I'm certain NAQCC would enjoy more participation in their sprints. Maybe one way to spread the word about SKCC is to participate and be active in other club events and discussions.

I would participate in an SKCC QRP event but think that we would have more fun participating in an established event. There are plenty of QRP events to take part in. Run For the Bacon, Fox Hunt and NAQCC Sprint are three that come to mind immediately.

This doesn't have to be an 'event' per se. Just a regularly sheduled evening when QRP SKCCers will have a better chance of scaring up contacts. Unlike the sprints, each evening would have no 'scoring'. Just a chance to acculumate QRP experience and points towards the awards.

I will definately participate whenever I can.

Count me in ! I have an FT-817 that needs some cobwebs blown off plus a couple other QRP rigs that need exercising. Operating is fun but you are missing out if you don't build something now and then.

Couldn't you make this a 24 hr event? I'd like to use my 20 meter RockMite but the band will be long gone by then. I have so much QRN on the low bands in my neighborhood that it makes QRP nearly impossible at night.

Conversation from Yahoo...

One of the advantages of narrowing the time is that it concentrates the members making it a bit easier to make contact. Technically, every day is QRP day and Straight Key Night and ...

I noticed that one of the (non-SKCC) contests this weekend is being performed in sessions. I think they have two 4-hour sessions. Maybe something like this can be held in sessions too?

Another suggestion I have... maybe we could try out my chat board for the gathering to help find each other and coordinate things? The chat board has been getting very little use lately. Unlike the forum or the list, the chat is realtime. In the first couple of days of operation we had a great crowd swapping stories and sharing pictures (again, realtime) but there was little in the way of coordinating on-air activities. Not being a contest, maybe the QRP event could benefit from realtime coordination?
