SKCC Weekend Sprints

Postby NT9K » Mon Jan 22, 2007 9:16 pm

With the end of K1Y coming soon what will we do for an encore? It hasn't even ended yet and I'm already wanting more. My observations of K1Y have been that weekend daytime and evening events are where the numbers are.

I would like to see a 12 or 24 hour event on the weekend similar to a qso party. Short exchanges would be nice to entice the beginners on the air and allow for some competition for the more experienced ops. Something for everyone. I'd like to see an event like this every month.

I can already hear people say, how would you schedule it around other events. Well, I believe that the size the SKCC has grown to will allow us to set our own schedule and people will just have to choose to operate in our event or another. Same as the NAQCC issue.

Pulling off an event like this wouldn't be anymore difficult than our sprint with the exception of alot more participants. We could even use the same format.

So, what do you all think?

I like the idea Bill. I had a wonderful time using the K1Y call and I also look forward to the Sprints each month.

The only bad thing I can see, would be the added workload for Gordon. He would be swamped with new Centurions.

A monthly QSO Party might be a bit much especially if it is 24 hours long. Most QSO Parties are once a year. Maybe a summer and winter party? It depends on the tolerance level of our members.

The sprints have been going along nicely with just the email certificates. I'm not sure that an extra prize is required. The coffee cup and the qrz.com CD were nice prizes (and surprises) but I'm not sure people are making a decision to join in on the Sprint because of them.

It doesn't have to be 24 hrs. I was looking for an event that would be during daytime weekend hours when we might be able to get on the higher bands. I did have an alterier motive. I have a hard time staying awake for the sprints and seeing all the weekend daytime K1Y activity, thought it might be the same for this type of event.

Maybe 4 hours is more suitable? Or maybe just add another monthly sprint but on a weekend day. We need some member input on what the masses want and not what I want. hi..

I understand now. Yes, a daytime event on the weekend may attract a good crowd.

Would you pattern it after the Sprint? I could help with some background information and the PDF certificates. Do you have Corel Draw?

Try this out... SKCC Weekend Warrior. Submit your list of SKCC QSOs worked during the event. Maybe you could run it for the whole weekend but not as an intense contest. Just work as many SKCC members as you can over the selected weekend?

Another theme that might be interesting... not counting the total number of QSOs but the total length of time. Three or four 1-hour QSOs over a weekend might be more fun than 10 or 20 30-second QSOs. Just total up your time in all your weekend SKCC QSOs.

Now those are some good ideas! Being the Ted Nugent fan that I am, I also like the SKCC Weekend Warrior. My original thought was to pattern it exactly like the sprint but a longer timeframe.

I liked what you said here:

Yes, exactly! it wouldn't have to be an internationally publicized event. More so, a way to rack up new numbers for Centurion. (forgive me Gordon). The whole weekend was my first thought but that may be too much. I'd settle for 4 hours during daylight hours.

I don't have Corel Draw. I use Photoshop/paintshop pro..

A "daytime" event would improve the chance of intercontinental fun. I like the idea!

How about a little like the old Novice Roundup where you could work for so many hours out of a month or something like that.

Say we could work any 4 hours out of the 24 hours of SKN for a sprint score, but could still make QSO's for the other guy's score for the remaining 20 hours. Each area could pick their best operating time for propagation.

That is if your thinking of combining the SKN and Sprint.

Are there enough EU guys to organize an EU sprint? Their kind of left out.

Proposal - Weekend Warrior SKS

Postby NT9K » Thu Feb 01, 2007 12:20 pm

Weekend Warrior
Straight Key Sprint Rules
Version 2.0 - April 27, 2007

Summary: Call CQ SKS. Work stations once per band using a key which meets the requirements for SKCC membership. Exchange NAME, SPC and SKCC# (or power for non-members). The final score is (Total QSOs * SPC multiplier) + Centurion Bonus + Tribune Bonus + Club Bonus. The use of spotting networks is NOT permitted. Asking for a QSY to another band after a valid contact IS permitted.

Sliding contest slot: The event will be 24 hours, you may pick any continuous 4 hour log window during the event to come up with your entry. Submit a total number of QSOs for the 24 hour period and your 4 hour contest scores. Working outside of your chosen 4 hour window is encouraged to help others to achieve higher scores and spread out the fun. The purpose of the sliding slot window is to allow more on-air flexibility in all our busy lives. Another advantage of the slot window is the ability to work our DX members.

Eligibility: All CW operators using manual keys meeting the requirements for SKCC membership may participate in the monthly Straight Key Sprint. See http://skccgroup.com for membership details. You do not need to be an SKCC Member to participate.

Date and Time: The monthly weekend, Straight Key Sprint will be held on the second Sunday of each month from 0000Z to 0000Z. Schedule changes, if required, will be posted to the SKCC mailing list and forum.
