K3Y 2011 Ends

Dear SKCC Family, it has been an honor to be the K3Y Coordinator this year. The K3Y Event Team worked so very hard to bring you this event! This event is a huge job and takes a dedicated team to pull it off. It took months of planning and sacrifice from the team members. It was a pleasure working wi...

For example, if your SKCC number is 5907, then you shouldn't send 5NT7. It's ok to use cut numbers in the RST for 5NN, just not your SKCC numbers.
Make sense?

Hi John, that is the same oscillator kit I built. I like mine! I can take it anywhere and either use headphones or the external speaker. It was pretty simple to build too.

Hi John, congratulations on getting your ticket! Yes, those settings look ok to me. I'd suggest getting the free program called G4FON. It will allow you to create text files and play them back at any speed you like. You can make all sorts of text files using the characters and words that you're havi...

Hi John, based on the criteria you give, you could look at a Navy Flameproof or maybe a J38 or Nye Viking Speed-x key. Start by looking here: http://www.mtechnologies.com/keys.htm They have about the best selection of new keys you will find. I'm not affiliated with them, but have bought many keys fr...

Annual K3Y mug

(Forwarded from the SKCC yahoo group) From Tom KC9ECI SKCC Founder

I finally got around to getting it together. Looks nice. I'm not going to take
it offline at the end of the month as I have in the past, it will be available
until the new one next year.

Hi Mike, congratulations on your first cw contact! That's a pretty big deal! Maybe it's me, but I think the people you meet using CW are just nicer. I hope to get to work you sometime, maybe on 7114. That's the Elmer frequency where lots of us listen. Lot's of us like to go slow too! Good Luck Mike,...

Real nice comments Mark! Sometimes, I think that I like building gear more than I do operating it. I have so many projects in the works, it isn't funny. One way I keep them organized is to store them in plastic food containers with lids. Especially the kits with small parts. Having lids that seal ke...

Hi Mike, welcome to the SKCC and the forum. You mentioned listening to the Gordon West tapes. On the SKCC website there is a learning page with some books converted to CW in speeds from 5 to 40 wpm. Look here: http://www.skccgroup.com/learn/ There are lots more resources for learning on the SKCC web...

SNAFU in the K3Y QSL Card Voting

Dear Members, I fouled up and somehow left out a members card. I feel real bad about it! Please go back and take another look at the cards and recast your votes, if you would. The program that Dick K2RFP wrote will allow you to vote more than once and only take your last vote. Prior votes from the s...

Hi Mark, is that picture the one that you have on the way? It sure is clean! I posted a few more pictures on my slatboard webpage of the pictures of the slatboard receiver from the Nov 2009 CQ article. It uses a single 12AT7 valve and is built on the wooden slatboard chassis. I may not build the exa...

Hi Mark, yes you can use the metal 6L6 tubes. I just prefer glass types and clear glass, so I can see them glow. I have another tube should be here tomorrow. It's a clear glass 6V6G coke bottle shaped tube and will also work in my slat board, but will produce a bit less wattage. I'm not sure if it w...

I took another picture of it with the new tube and put it on the new webpage I'm working on here: http://www.nt9k.com/slatboard.html I'll add more stuff to the page, like links to parts sources in case anyone else wa...

Would you like to help with the SKCC K3Y 5th year event?

As we did for our last Anniversary event, we will again be giving away prizes, with the grand prize being a key. We want to have other prize drawings too, if we receive enough donations. There are lots of ways members can help the SKCC, this could be an easy way for those of you who want to and who ...

Mark, I first saw this circuit in Dave Ingram's column in November 2009 CQ magazine and did some research on the web and found that it originally appeared in 1946 CQ magazine. I found some pdf's on the web that helped me a lot. There is a company called pasttime projects that sells almost the same t...

Hi Mark, I'm setting the transmitter up on 40m and making slow progress. I'm just taking my time and trying to make it look nice. I've been collecting parts for over a year to build this thing. My goal is to have it working for the ARRL SKN on New Years Eve. I'd still like to fine a vintage 6L6 ST t...

Thanks Mark, I just might have to make one for myself? I think if I do, I will add another socket for the smaller type 49 metal case crystals. They bend a lot farther than the FT-243's will and I have a couple transmitters that use the newer type crystals.

1940's 6L6 slat board transmitter and power supply

Here is another project that I'm working on. This one still has a good bit of work that needs to be done, but coming along nicely. I tried to use as much vintage era parts as I could, down to the cloth covered wire. The coil is wound for 40m. These transmitters were sometimes called sucker stick tra...

A simple VXO

Here is a new project that I am building for a friend. It's a simple VXO that will allow the frequency to be varied on an otherwise rockbound crystal transmitter. The variable capacitor is 365pF and will let the user swap out the inductor to change the range of slide. This has been a fun project and...

Hi John, you measure it from the middle of the center insulator to the end of the wire, not the part you wrapped. Look in this graphic: http://www.skccgroup.com/nt9k/images/DipoleConst_A.jpg At the top of the picture, it says insulator eye. That is the end of the wire and your mark. Just under that ...
