In the summer I take my MFJ QRP rigs and a 6AH battery out to the picnic table and throw a dipole over tree branches. I have worked all over the country with a few watts with a hasty antenna 15 or 20 ft up in a tree. 40 and 30 M bands work best for me. I have an old Gym bag to transport the rigs and...

You don't need to match brands, TenTec keyer is not needed to match a TenTec radio ! Any modern keyer will work with a solid state rig. Any MFJ keyer, for instance, will work with any solid state rig. You just have to see if you have positive voltage on the key line. Most open collector output circu...

It hardly looks like a Ham Radio Station from the "good old days" In the late 60's to early 70's I had a reciever and transmitter that took up most of a full sized office desk ! (E.F.J.Viking Valiant transmitter and Hallicrafters SX101a receiver) Those "modern" radios look like l...

Nice neat station.
Only thing I can call clutter is the microfone taking up space on the desktop.
I have a couple of mobile microfones connected to my rigs, but they are hung up behind the working space where they can't get lost and if I EVER need them, there they are. :D

QRL?

Getting back to the QRL? issue, the use of QRL has come around rather recently in my radio operating career. When I was a new operator we just sent "??" on a freq to see if anyone was standing by there. When I had a novice license we had a few Xtal frequencies to use and if they were busy ...

I still insist the best way to practice copy is listen to a good receiver on 40M between 7105 and 7120 for slow CW QSOs. Hearing perfect, noise and QRM free Code generated by a computer is nothing like what you hear when you finally get on the air. I am afraid hearing some noise and QRM would freak ...

leftykeyer experiences

I saw my first keyer in about 1962 at one of the radio stores in downtown Detroit when I was a high school kid Novice. I just automatically grabbed the display paddle on the brand new demo W9TO keyer with my left hand and experimented with sending some code with it. I always used my left hand for wr...

The best thing to do is get yourself invited to go to other hams' shacks in your area who are straight key users and try out thier keys off the air to see what they feel like . See if you can find out local club meeting times to meet more CW ops in your area. FM repeaters have local nets and you may...

The best reason to send "??" or "QRL?" on a seemingly unoccupied frequency is the fact that on the higher bands You may not hear a staation that is in your state or region although the guy on the other end may be thousands of miles away and would hear your signal clobbering your ...

A club I used to belong to had a MCW code practice net on a 220 mHz repeater. I modified an old Motorola "PL"board with a reed for 700 Hz paging tone (all olde tech) wired to a microphone cord plugged into the FM rig. I keyed a transistor that was originally part of the "reverse burst...

WAC award

We will not be hearing VY1JA on for a while from either Whitehorse or Alert. His XYL, Ann, needed back surgery and the way Canada health care covers everyone, he had to sell most of his Ham gear to pay for her care. (like Obamacare only with more snow) ...It will be quite awhile before he will be ba...
