Re: New member from Illinois.

the best way to find skcc members is listen to the SKCC "meeting" frequencies on each band that is open to your area. If you hear no activity try calling CQ on those frequencies. List of frequencies is in the webpage. The next thing is going to the K3UK schedule page for SKCC members. That...

Re: New member from South Australia

Welcome and I hope you have made some CW contacts by now! S Australia is beyond my usual range on the air but I have worked some of the SKCC members there now and then on 10 and 20M with my wires and 100W. If you have a good antenna and I get my yagi's rotor problem fixed in our spring warmup we may...

Re: Studying for my Extra

congrats to roger and have fun on CW. I took my Extra exam over 20 years ago (20 WPM CW exam included) and when I look over the new Extra questions I have trouble answering the questions in the RF exposure topic. Some of it is common sense but the exposure level vs freq etc.. Just can't keep the num...

Re: WES Operating Duration

The reason I enjoy the Weekend Sprint events is I don't have to sit up all day and night the way some "contesters" do.
I rarely get more than 8 hours total in several sessions of an hour or two for the weekend Sprints..I still manage to rate in the top third of all entries in the event.

Re: Sprint help

If you hear someone calling "CQ SKS" (Straight Key Sprint, the monthly, 2 hour long, weekday sprint) , or "CQ WES" (the weekend 24 hour event) you answer them lwith your callsign. Then they will reply with your RST report, the state they are located in and the name of the op and ...

SKS Europe

I have not participated in the "SKSE" yet because I currently have no tower and KW amp that most serious DXers seem to require. Just for curiosity I checked the results of this month's SKSE and was shocked that only three, out of a total of 17 participants were even IN EUROPE ! Who are all...

Re: Zero beating

WHY "ZERO BEAT' ? First off, Zero beating is a term left over from the old days of separate AM transmitter VFO and recievers back in the tube days. You would listen to an AM signal and to get on freq you turned on the VFO or "Spot" on the transmitter and tuned the VFO dial near the re...

Re: Mid loaded inverted L for 160 - all bands with a tuner

With 100 ft of (what kind of coax) you are getting attenuated reflected power from the coax loss, harder to tune? maybe just higher SWR readings with a lot less coax attenuation ? Closer to the true readings.

Re: 160 M suggested freq

Drew, just out of curiosity I checked the AMBC stations in yuor area to see what could interfere on 160M. I found WURD on 900 kHz, 2nd harmonic falls on 1800 WCHR on 920, 2nd harmonic on 1840 WIP on 610, 3rd harmonic on 1830. None have very strong transmitter power, 1-5 kW. There are several 50 kw s...

Re: Homebrew Transmitters & Power supplys

Hi Gary, I think we finally had a QSO on 40m. Keep signed in on the K3UK SKCC page or Elmer page to find people to QSO lwith and above all, LISTEN for QRS QSOs you can copy and get familiar with the procedures to follow in a QSO and in Calling a CQ. Best of luck with your transmitter project. My fir...

Re: 60M awards ?

I am now up to 44 SKCC members on 60M CW . There seems to be a slow and steady uptake of 60M CW operation in progress. My goal is 100 members on 60M by next spring. Now and then I meet someone who is sure CW is still not permitterd on 60 ! Keep up with the rule changes folks ! The lower bands are ge...

SKCC "channel" for 60M

Proposal; using 5332 for SKCC meeting place. Should we use ch1 for SKCC calls or the 2nd channel, more likely to be unoccupied.
Do any 60M CW ops have an opinion?

Re: Homebrew Transmitters & Power supplys

Looking back 51 years, I built a single tube 80M transmitter when I was 16 years old. It came from plans in a magazine. Most of the parts came from junk TVs and radios people gave me. I used a cigar box as the chassis since I had no metal working tools or skills. It worked ! The next year I got an A...

Re: Worked All Canada (W.A.C) award

We used to drive over the bridge from Detroit to Windsor to have dinner at a few great places but now I need to get a passport ( I never ever needed one even to go the Caribbean islands before) to get back home ! I am too irritated with our politics to do this, so no more weekends in Niagara falls, ...

Re: 60M awards ?

60M UPDATE. I have worked a few new SKCC members on 60M since last post here, now have 24 states worked but the few SKCC members I have chatted with on the K3UK page mention firmware or software changes needed for newer rigs to go to 60M ! What a bummer ! My 18 year old Kenwood only needed a jumper ...
