2 K3Y's (W5 and KH6)
I'M PROBABLY CONFUSED, BUT I DIDN'T HEAR A SINGLE CQ WES??? 40 AND 20 WERE POOR MOST OF SATURDAY WITH NA CONTEST AND CONDX BAD MOST OF SUNDAY. I DID HEAR 3 K3Y STATIONS AND SNAGGED ONE OF THEM. I HOPE I'M NOT THE ONLY WES ON SUNDAY???
A fun sprint plus 4 hours as K3Y/3.
Thanks for the QSOs. This was the first time I used my bug for almost the entire event. It seems it likes to add extra dots every so often and my cat, Autumn, likes to add the odd dash or two. In spite of that, you worked me anyway.
It was cold (for Kansas) but the bands seemed hot. 73, Jim
Thanks to all who made this WES happen and thanks to all who were patient with this developing fist and with the big antennas. I worked all WES on a new W1SFR Single Lever Portable set up as a Cootie key modulating my massive 12 watts from the KX2 into a 41 ft vertical wire on the boat.
Got two contacts in the few minutes I had free on Saturday afternoon and planned to get more time on Sunday. The QRN here was unbearable on Sunday so did not spend much time at it but did snag K3Y/KP4 with three watts. 73 to all, Peter
Very strong signals of K4BAI-John!!. Listen also K3Y/2, K3Y/5 and K3Y/Ø, but unfortunately, they did not listen to me!!!
Happy New Year and thank you all for the nice WES
73 and HNY to all !
Thanks for the QSOs. 73 and HNY Bert
Hard Going 20m not too hot for me although I managed to make myself heard 5W to small G5RV.
40m unusable unless station is s9+ as I have S9 QRN from 0700 to 2400Hrs :-(
30m not allowed.
No antenna for 80m
So all in all Not too Bad.
I enjoyed it as I always do but
Weird conditions - I found sigs came up around 1400z both days, but faded away quite rapidly and by 1500z virtually nil. This was all on 20m. I did try 15m now and then but nothing. Great fun to work Ward / ON8WR for his 5th ever CW QSO, and in poor conditions.
Managed two K3Y stations - both K3Y/9's - that was Ken/N8KR as K3Y/9 , and Marty/N9SE as K3Y/9. Also completed one word "Anniversary".
Rig: TS-440s 100 watts, MA6V vertical, Marconi Air Ministry B1 spark key and a Marconi PS No213A.
Fun as usual, some new numbers and some good dx even thought conditions weren't great most of the time. Thanks for the Qs.
Fun event..Great to work new members. Thanks to all the K3Y operators 73 Rick Mo Outlaws group
Fun hunting for the K3Y stations. We need to encourage more membership in Asia and Africa. A pleasure to work so many good CW ops! Congratulations to my NH buddy Larry, KJ1RE, on his S!
Had a good time, as usual. Bands were up and down, but worked 20, 40, and 80, with a couple of contacts on the west coast, also as usual. Still using K2RFP's logger - a great help. Good to hear the old-timers and glad to hear so many ops newer to SKCC. Looking forward to the next one! Vy 73 for 2018, Lee K1LEE
Happy New Year's bands were up and down 40 and 20 were mostly very active. worked few stns on 160m nice to see some stns using 160m . worked few new members GREAT ....73, Hank PU..G eee
Yaesu FT817nd @ 5watts - 53' endfed
Played WES while trying to hunt down additional K3Y stations for the log...Condx. weren't all that great but had fun anyway...necessity being the mother of invention, I came up with a great idea to keep my newly acquired J-38 firmly planted and not doing forward flips on my desk top! A couple of pieces of #12 wire wrapped around a very light one pound dumbbell handle and through the old J-38 headphone binding post holes...and Viola! No more moving around and no more key acrobatics! ;-) Okay! Back to chasing K3Y's! see ya next month! 73/72 de Jim K2MIJ
Rough start on Saturday. Had to fight a snow storm between operating sessions. Sunday was great!
Rig was a Ten Tec Eagle running 90 watts and a G5RV up 60 feet in trees. keys were a Vibroplex Bug and a Russian T3A.
As a first timer, with a new SCKK number, it was a lot of fun.
Memo to Self: If you are going to clear the snow off of the driveway before doing the WES, and manage to slip and fall, don't slam your right elbow and wrist down on the pavement. It makes pounding brass difficult and results in lots of time-outs.
Near the end, I worked Kerry - WD5ABC (#12) and Andrew-N2IVY (#18032) back to back. How about that for spanning the SKCC membership spectrum?
100 watts QRO this time - did not think that the sore arm would tolerate the additional banging away that it takes to operate at a QRP level. Jody - K3JZD
Busy weekend. WES, NAQP CW, and many Honey Dues! I have a "telegrapher's Arm" aka "Glass Arm" from pumping the old Navy flame-proof key. Had fun. Thanks for the Qs. Dale K3SEN
Got my first shot at K3Y/3 for this year to kick off the WES. I took time off to participate in the NAQP CW event for 10 hours starting at 1800 Saturday, then resumed the WES Sunday morning. Hats off to anyone that managed all 19 K3Y areas I got 16 missing AS, NA, SA,
Pretty lame this time, especially given all amount of CW activity on the bands --- I didn't at first realize that NACW also was going. I was only on a little bit--- still, really should have done better. Seemed like I had a hard time breaking in- almost makes me wonder if my antenna blew down in the wind or the electrons froze :-) On the positive note, my CW Academy II class is helping my listening skills.
Thanks for all QSOs and Happy New Year to all.
Still learning. Hopefully better next time
It was a fun event but I didn't try to compete with the NAQP. I did make good progress toward my Tx6 however. Thanks for the Qs
Icom 703+ @10 Watts to end-fed wire. Navy FP key.
Good time snagging the few I got.
Had a Great time as always, TU al for the QSO's.
Anybody else wake up in middle of night hearing
dah-dit di-dah ???
I decided to only work as K3Y/5 as slotted. Then local RFI and another distraction, but want to say thanks to those who called. Great bunch of very patient guys and gals.
Got to get up a regular vee or sumthin. 73,
MISSED several K3Y areas: 4,6,8 & AF. Spelled all the Bonus Words. Had to go begging for the last missing letter 'Y' but in the end, I logged 2 of em with an hour and a half remaining in the WES. Most action was on 20m. 1 contact on 80m, 11 on 40m and the rest on 20m. Spent too many hours making up a spread sheet but was glad to share it with 29 other SKCC ops who requested it. All good clean fun, eh? 73 de Jerry in NorCal
I had a few short sessions opf operating, about2 hours for this months WES. I had several QSOs on 160 and 80 but more on 40M, one each on 30 and 20M. The NA contest did not help, heard strong ops sitting on the usual SKCC freqs woking that contest ! Overall I had a good time, ran into many old friends this weekend !
Have pneumonia so did not work many.
Very little time this weekend, but at least made a few contacts. See you all in the next WES.
Another fun Wes. Worked more dx stations than normal. Got Tony OA4DX on two bands for my first ever wes QSOs to SA. Rig used was a Index Labs QRP Plus with Hardrock 50 amp. A 80/160m inverted L, 40m trap dipole, and a MFJ mag loop for antennas. Main key used was Ameco. Occasionally used a home brew cootie. Thanks to all.
Thanks to K6III, Jerry, for the great spreadsheet for bonus tracking. First time that I used it but wow, it was cool. Great WES and had a ball.
Thanks to all who participated, especially all the K3Y/x stations. Hope everyone is have fun during our anniversary activities. Bet 73 & God Bless. Ric
Throw in the N.America QSO Party and geomagnetic disturbance, it made it challenging. Thanks to those that came out, as well as the K3Y stations. 73 Art
Did pretty well for 4 hours on the WES. Worked at the K3Y/5 station for the first time and had a lot of fun guys. Great start for the year. WX was cold here in East TX.
I only worked the WES during my K3Y/4 shifts. I forgot about the spelling bonus until I was filling out the WES score sheet. Short one "Y", of all things, I went back on the air and let K3Y/0 save me :-) I can't expect a 1200 point total to take the prize this month, but it was still a lot of fun. Lots of activity this weekend. I know the 6 inches of snow on top of the ice made up my mind :-)
Thank You for the WES QSO's.
GL es Happy New Year.
Only 50 this time. I was visiting my grandson on Sunday. Still did OK. Thanks for all the QSOs
Several non-SKCC hams stopped by to ask about WES. I am sending them the SKCC web pages with my QSL cards. All CW enthusiasts should know about this great club.
A particularly fun WES as I tried QRPp with my Softrock RXTX Running "Rocky" software. Made 7 QSO's in spite of the low propagation conditions. The Panadapter is a great help in spotting strong stations for a QRPp try. A big thanks to the Stations that made the effort to work me!
January is always a fun WES for me since it is during K3Y. The bands were busy and I picked up some new numbers and new members! I must be late tot he game since I only see February's theme so I have no idea what the bonus theme is. Fun is more fun than bonuses anyway so welcome 2018!!
Tough sledding for me, conditions from my QTH on 40M weren't as good during the day as has hoped. Used a HB clone of the Norcal 40A for the entire sprint.
Single digit temperatures, snow, ice and high winds while on vacation had snapped the rubberized twist ties holding my 31 foot Jackite end fed antenna support pole to my deck railing. The pole survived the fall intact and was found laying across the deck. Thanks to a roll of Velcro I was able to re-erect the pole and get on the air late Sunday.
First time trying WES and it was great fun!
Fun time this WES. Running 5w into end fed antenna in the attic. Contacted Bert F6HKA on 20 and 40 meters. Happy New Year to all. 73's Joe
Happy New Year to all here. Not much time and propagation lacking. Thanks to all that worked me. 73
Was fun as usual , spent a bit of time digging out from snow storm , watching football , & the Na contest didn't help on Saturday. But overall conditions pretty good for me . 73 to all Don
Used the TenTec Eagle with a dipole at 30-feet. Tough band conditions on a big contest weekend made things harder than usual but always a good time. Thanks for the friendly Q's and fun!
WES was really fun as everyone really stuck with playing hard in the weak conditions. 20m opened up a bit mid-Sunday in the Pacific NW and east coast stations and KP4SJ were are respectable 559. Hope the back end of K3Y sees better propagation! 73, Don
Had fun as always. Better band conditions than usual. Happy to work Stan/ZL2BLQ on 3 bands Saturday.
My first WES since May'17, was in and out but had a fun time!
Didn't work as many as I hoped, but caught all the domestic K3Y regions and also picked up Pablo (KP4SJ) in Puerto Rico which I had needed for K3Y.
All in all a lot of fun as usual and thank you to everyone I worked! 73!
fun event as always, although bands weren't all that cooperative at times. Managed to get all the words spelled. Used the IC7300, droopy dipole and majority of the time, my 1919 Vibroplex Original along with the Begali HST. Was great fun catching a few new numbers and a few chats that went more than the normal exchange. Was not able to catch one K3Y/6. Great fun everyone ... thanks for the contacts and catch you next month. 73, jack
Good time to play with the rig and work some K3Y stations in this month's WES. A lot of fun as usual.
WOW!! What a WES. Had a great time, and picked up Tx7 ++ along the way
tnx for pulling me out second wes
Second WES learning a lot. I'm hooked.
Hear you next month.
Was operating from a park using MFJ-9020 @3.8 watts. Saturday was tough due to the contest and not so great selectivity of the MFJ.
K3Y stations! Thank you for picking up me from the piles.
Didn't get to operate as much as I wanted, and NA QSO party made it a challenge for sure on Saturday ... Still super fun as always
Good fun. Thanks everyone!
73 -- Jay W8AIM
I enjoyed the event during these zero sunspot days. As usual, propagation was just fine here in Missouri. Thanks to all of the SKCC members who found my signal.
Not a lot of time to play but still enjoyed it...73 es cul....Bill N0UMP
First timer on WES. I added 6 x 100 points for unique K3Y stations and 300 points for words from the anniversary theme. I hope that is correct for scoring purposes.
Had a lot of fun today after a few months absence. Thanks for the QSO and HNY. 73 Mike
I've been off the air for a while :( I'm moving in march so I packed up almost all of my gear except for the old kenwood ts-440 because it has a speaker. I gave the sked page a try this time around hardly even calling cq, just kind of monitoring a freq and notifying on sked. It was an enjoyable laid back experience and I recommend it. Logging on paper was more fun than I expected.
Fighting the NA on Saturday was tough. Sunday was a blast ! 40 was busy Sunday AM and 20 meter conditions did not favor FL in the morning, but improved in the afternoon. A very enjoyable WES Thanks to all the K3Y ops for their patience and endurance. Updated Rig photo. The FTdx3000 is a much better radio than the Sherwood ratings would have you believe. CU All next month,73 de AL N4ow
A fun WES, worked a few Sat, then late Sun. Started out QRP with the K1 and KX2. Then had a chance for AK and PR so I went QRO with the KX3, didn't want to miss them, and I got them !!
That gave me my state side sweep and KH6, KL7 and KP4, still need AF, AS,OC and SA, still got some time !
Till next month....72/73 from Bradenton, FL
Tnx fer the QSOs. Had a great time.Worked all 40M. Band was up es down es crowded, but pretty good here in WV. Thanks to the SKCC team for all they do to make it all happen. Enjoyed this months theme.Tnx Ron.
I couldn't hear any WES CQs on Sat. because of the NAQP but got a few K3Y stations. Then I did better on Sun.
FT-450 at 100w, balanced line fed inverted V up 35ft.
And my old standby Junker sk.
I had alot of fun and thank you to all the stations I did get.
73 and HNY,
Bands were less than optimum during my stint as K3Y/9. I was running high power and I fear that I may not have been able to hear some stations who could hear me and called in vain.
Ola.. k2 5 wts g5rv.. 40 and 20 mtrs.. fun agn.. tnx to the board.. just think, Only 11 more WES left for this new year.. ha.. I can't wait to mow grass.. ha.. wow Ann, on the monthly new members.. SUPER .. I'll guess, 19,000 by December 31 2018... I keep track on my manual WES logs.. don't know computer stuff hr..
So tnx to all.. pix is DUBBUG nr4 and is righthanded...
73 cul Dave firstname.lastname@example.org
Used new Begali Swing cootie for the first time. Sorry for the glitches in sending. Thanks to the organizers for a nother WES
Thanks to all for the QSO's. Working WES is always enjoyable.
Rig: KX3 Running 1 watt
ANT: Inv Vee @ 40 feet
Short time and equipment problems, so I concentrated on getting the K3Y stations. Picked up 5. Also helped three members with their S Quest.
Not a lot of time to operate and left to make 108 contacts in the NAQP contest but fun as always.
Elecraft K3 100 watts. 2 element 5 band quad at 40'or 160M full wave horizontal loop fed with window line depending on band.
This was my very first WES, and actually also one of the first times I do CW on the air (maybe had 2 or 3 qso's before this WES)
Thanks everyone for the patience, I did not make that many qso's but I am very hapy with every single one of them.
This proves to me that you can work the world on CW much better than on SSB, having made quite some contacts with USA, and one with VK even in band conditions that were not really great.
Could not be in the shack from saturday till sunday 15:25....and poor propagation when I come back.
Haven't been active on HF or CW for about 3 years!
Had almost forgotten how exciting morse code is. No DX but that was expected from my little bedside shack.
73 de Joakim/SA5ACN
No antenna on 80m. On 40m band, I have gigantic local QRM. Antenna on 20m is only GP so with poor propagation only 9 QSO. Thank you Chas (K3WW) for K3Y/3 and thank you Ken (N8KR) for K3Y/9.
CU All next month!
NAQCC SWL-99 and Italian SWL I5-2701
73 & HNY de Gabriel
Only had a part of Sunday for my first SKCC event.
Happy New Year
Worked a total of 8 hours over the two days. 40 & 20m w/IC-7300 into OCFD. Lots of fun as usual. HNY everyone! SKCC forever!
I called several EU & NA stations that couldn't hear me. One way skip is always hard to figure!
First WES in a while. Only had a few hours on Saturday. Was only running 5 watts to a Hustler mobile antenna.
Not much time for WES this month. Mainly looked for K3Y stations. Got 11 areas and 2 words. Didn't hear any 4th call area K3Y stations and K3Y/8 was always on a band that was too close to work. Could have done without the usual contest of the week. K3 @ 100 w to beam or loop. Had Q's on 160 - 20. Condx were just so so here.
Operated K3Y/5 most of the time with a few hours as W5TMT. Had a blast. Wish I could learn the bug. Straight key gets a little tiring for an old man. Apologies to those who left me messages on the SKED page. First time using it. Need to find the directions.
Fun WES and great way to spend a snowy weekend. Thanks for the QSO's. IC718 @100w 130 ft end fed wire. Vibroplex Straight Key.
Was busy most of the weekend by had some fun at N8KR's K3Y/9 multi-op for an hour Saturday and at my own station for a couple hours Sunday afternoon. The photo is of me operating K3Y/9 at N8KR.
Not as much time on the air as I would have liked but a WES is always fun! Spent far too much time listening to the noise on 20 hoping to catch K3Ys from OC, AS, and KL7. Thanks for the contacts 'specially with the K3Y ops.
KX3, KXPA100, PX3 - 75 watts to a 40 meter dipole 5 ft above ground! Vibroplex Straight Key. Limited to 40M only, but was able to operate on and off throughout the weekend. After a long layoff, I am trying to get back into the swing of things. Thanks to both John, K4BAI and Dave, NE5DL for noticing that it had been awhile,
Of course, I appreciate all of the contacts.
QSOs in 32 states with a 40M antenna 5 ft above ground - ah! the magic of ham radio!
See you next month.
Not any time to wk this weekend, 72, Ray
Operated QRP-portable from High Point State Park in northern New Jersey. With the temperatures in the teens, I didn't stay out there too long. I also made a few contacts from a cabin at the Mohican Outdoor Center in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
Not much operating time for this WES. Got wrapped up with other projects, and worked less than an hour. Thanks for the QSO's!
Didn't spend much time in this WES, but managed to work 5 K3Y stations. It took several tries on some stations, even to get Ohio on 40 meters! Thanks for the contacts. 73, Art
Was only able to work the last hour because of working today and yesterday's NA Contest but it was worth it. My QRP sig couldn't get into one K3Y/0 pile-up but was heard by the other K3Y/2. Thanks to all who answered my call. Great time as usual
Happy New Year all!!
Very nice WES. I also operated as K3Y/7 and between the two I was able to get 4 more SKCC numbers toward Tx8. Only 16 more to go.
I worked this weekend sprinthon from our family farm using an inverted v, Flex 1500 and J-37 key. I was too busy working/freezing to make many contacts but I did get to come inside to warm up a few times. Thanks to everybody who worked to pull out my qrp signal.
Had to quit after 30 minutes, my sending arm tightened up, even with paddles which I've needed due to surgery. Did enjoy the sprint, however briefly. Made one coast-to-coast QSO MA-CA with good sigs both ways with Tony K6ELQ. My first WES in a long time.
I was the K3Y/7 op for 2 hours on Sunday, and man was that fun!! Very busy and put 66 in the log. Great WES, thanks for all the contacts!
Another rough one but a lot of fun as usual. Bands were in the commode for sure. But thanks to all that pulled out my weak signal. Thanks to Bert for K3Y/EU. Could only work a few hours on Sunday due to a meeting. Ran the IC-746Pro on 80 meters and the IC-7300 on 40 meters. Both into the ZS6BKW (G5RV) at 32 feet. Best 72 from Wild and Wonderful West Virginia, Dave
