This sprint is dedicated to webmaster Bill, NT9K in gratitude for the work he has done for SKCC over the past years. Even with his very serious health problems he found the time to keep the club website going. But more than that, Bill has been the inspiration for many of the activities that SKCC members have come to enjoy. It has been my pleasure to work with him in many of them. Thank you Bill.

In case you missed it, here are some words from Bill's retirement notice:

"When I started doing work for the club, I did it because I liked helping others. At that time, I had recently had to go on disability. All my life, I had worked in jobs that in some way helped others and my work for the club offered me a way to continue doing that, to feel useful and needed again. I live alone and had the time to devote most of the past 5 years to the club. Nobody will ever know the joy and love that I put into my work, nor the countless hours I put in or the sacrifices that I made for the club. To me, it was an honor to be able to serve the members and always felt that I got back so much from my efforts, that it justified the work."

"..I've always done my best to try and help the SKCC grow into the best amateur radio club in the world and I feel that the work I did backs that up. Things like being Webmaster, Administrator of the web server, founding the WES, running both sprints at times, creating the DX awards, Elmers, implementing the Honor Roll, Hall of Fame, every Anniversary event for 5 years and even donated at great expense the SKCC club key design. I did those things and much more, because I truly love the SKCC. Nobody will ever know the countless hours and hardships that I suffered on behalf of the SKCC. I know and that's all that really matters in the end!"

"..I would like to say thank you to all my friends and the members who do care about me and the things I have done for the club. I have always tried to do my best to serve you and the SKCC to the best of my ability! I am truly sorry that things have worked out this way. God Bless and keep you safe and well!
73 Bill NT9K.."

Soapbox

K2RFP Operated by: Dick, 2099T from NY

Here is a collection of antenna items I built over the years. The wooden box
has a Carolina Windom which as been used by the Radio Central Amateur Radio
Club for several special events. The criss-cross device is a spooler to wind
up the wire. The ropes in the box at the right also fit in this antenna box.

In the box at the right is a 20m/40m fan dipole that was also built for and
used in club special events.

The three wooden spools in the front have lightweight QRP antennas that I
can take along in my backpack QRP station.

The two coils of black wire in the lower right make up a 20m dipole that was
used during the recent Marconi Day Special Event. The white circles are
sections of PVC pipe that I used for the end insulators. The 1:1 balun in
the cardboard box provides the center feed point.

I wanted a dipole that went in an east west direction. The only place I had to put one
was in the attic. I decided on a fan dipole for 10, 12, 15 and 17 meters (one feed line).
I put it up using household 14 gauge electric wire and for the spacers I used PVC pipe.
It works well and has the advantage of being protected from the weather. The hardest part
of this project was getting the antenna tuned on all four bands.

It works fine and in some instances it is better than my commercial outside dipole which
runs in a North South direction. My first contact using this antenna in the WES was
F6HKA on 15 meters. I was also able to work GR0RDO on 15 meters. I only used this antenna
for a short time as I spent most of my time on 80, 40 and 20 meters.

Had a little time Sunday morining to pound some brass. As always a fun event. Many thanks
to those "early birds" that were out there. The pro pump worked well. 73, and catch you
next time. jack

My special antenna project for the sprint was a 15 meter, 5/8ths wire ground plane in my
maple tree in the front yard. The radiator runs along side the trunk and the antenna has
2 bottom wires.

The antenna worked for 3 qso's but wasn't as good as my 1 wavelength 40 meter long wire
vee beam that I use on all bands and has been my favorite antenna for years.

Not much activity due to Mothers day and thunderstorms in some areas. Too bad too because
15 and 20 meters was in reasonably good shape.

I think I will add 6 feet to the radiator and ground plane of the special antenna and
then it will be a 40 meter ground plane.

NØLT Operated by: John, 2965T from IA

Fun as always.
Bands weren't great but not bad either.
Worked TJ, W0EA, about 25 miles away and Max, KH6ZM in HI.
Was wondering later if TJ was LP?
Some decent pileups that I decided not to wait out.
Some pretty good sounding fists out there. Always nice to hear.
See U next WES GL to all.
72,
John

KAORJY Operated by: Reg, 4100T from MN

It was only today that my Bride saw this antenna. It has been up for 4 weeks!
My shop is 40 feet long and this 20 meter dipole, 16 feet 6 inches per leg, fits nicely
on the peak of the roof. The Coas blends nicely with the roof. It is made using Radio
Shack speaker wire, a 1:1 balun and some coax. Look hard and you might see the white
balun and the coax.

Not much time for WES this May with Mothers Day and all.
I still had a great time using my new back-up rig, a Yaesu FT-450T.
Thank you to all that make these events possible.

My Stealth 20 Meter Dipole

GRØRDO Operated by: John, 2133T from England

Last chance for me to use the special royal wedding celebration call GR0RDO, and great
fun. Bit of a disaster earlier in the day when I went off up the hills to the Dog &
Ferret show, intending to operate QRP/M .... but forgot the 259 to 3/8" antenna adapter !
Back home later 16 QSO's with my 100w, Cushcraft MA6V and PS No213A big straight key.

Really nice conditions this weekend. Very enjoyable WES.

KA1SAW Operated by: Neal, 2824T from MA

I didn't have the time to spend on the radio as I would have liked, busy weekend. But I
managed to make a few contacts. It was great to make a contact with Max and Bert on 15
Meters. Thanks KA1SAW Neal -2824T

Got to try out my newly erected inverted "L" and my new Yaesu FT-950. Thanks to all for
another fun sprint.

built a mag loop antenna using The "G4ILO Wonder Loop" plans. Ran it on my Ten Tec Argosy
II at 5w and 50w to no avail. Max (KH6ZM) was booming in here on 15m but he could not
hear me. Switched to Jupiter and my big 1200ft loop @55ft up and got him right away.
Managed to catch Walt (VE#HNE) and Dean (NW2K). Had to then calll it quits for this one.
Neck really bothering me from the surgery. Had fun and got to try my portable mag loop.
think it will work better when not in the middle of a room full of radio gear. will try
it outside next time. Lookinf forward to the next sprint

I worked a few on 20M and 40M but spent most of the weekend mowing the lawn, planting the
garden and attending grandkids birthday parties. I also had a bit of a problem with the
sprintlogger. Sunday morning all of Saturday nights contacts were gone. Never figured
out how that happened or where they went.

Mother's Day impacted my operating time here but I must respect the day of the XYL that
takes care of me for the other 364 days. Signals were good for this one. Also missed the
Sprint on Thursday bacause of an unexpected trip. I'll be around for the next one. 73
and thanks to all that worked me.

Really my last WES from this QTH. (At least according to my present plan.) Thanks to all
for all the fun. Great to work Bert F6HKA, Joerg DL9YCS and Feco HA8KW on 15M. Once
again thanks for all the fun. Hope to work you all next month from Texas. 73

Wonderful to hear Hawaii well represented in this WES, and to hear so many, esp. QRP,
able to work HI; I was fortunate to work KH6ZM on both 15 and 20 meters. Thanks Max!!
Propagation and participation were excellent from what I heard.

The first score I have submiited for any ham contest event in 23 years of hamming.

N5RKD Operated by: Bill, 7176T from NM

On the afternoon before the start, I put up a 20m dipole with lobes E-W and apex at about
40 feet. Our trees here are small --- mostly juniper and pinon --- so I used a telescoping
fiberglass pole to support this creation. I ran 150 feet of coax of uncertain quality back
to the shack and connected the antenna to my spare transceiver of 30+ year vintage. My
homeowners' association has an attitude of benign indifference to my modest antenna farm
but, with a HOA meeting scheduled for Saturday afternoon, I was concerned that yet another
antenna creation would test their collective patience. All was well until I used this
set-up in earnest during the contest when I got a report that my old transceiver was
exhibiting some chirp. At least, this is what I think the report was! --- I extracted this
message from a splurge of dits and dahs at 20wpm with no regard to spacing. So, I just
used my main setup and switched the antennas as necessary. // Overall, I thought the bands
were in poor shape. I called on 10m on several occasions --- zip. 20m was the production
band and I used my home-brew antenna to work a few EU. Highlights here were digging out
F8BNU in the last hour and OH5FNI at 0443z. 15m provide an few QSOs on Sunday afternoon. I
made few contacts on 40m; RF in the shack was causing some problems so I ran at reduced
power here. // This time out, I tried to send slower but cleaner code. When conditions
were good, I sent my info once, no repeats, but many QSO partners insist on sending
everything twice even when we are 599 both ways. // Equipment: ICOM IC-7200 + vertical,

15 were pretty good. 15 was great with strong European signals for hours. 10M was mostly
dead and no WES signals heard there. See you all next month. Please look for me and
K4IQJ from Bonaire, May 24-31 as PJ4/home calls and for me as PJ4A in CQ WPX CW this
month. Unfortunately, I don't expect to have a hand key with me. Maybe I can find a
small one at Dayton. Hope to meet many of you at Dayton. 73, John, K4BAI.

This was the first sprint I really put my heart into - usually I just operate a couple hours and call it a day but with some
encouragement from my wife, I operated about 16 hours of the available time. The bands were very quiet so I was able
to work lots of weaker stations even though I was only operating 5 watts with the K2. Keys were a Soviet TK and a
Vibroplex Bug. Highlights were definitely working HI and AK in the sprint. Not very often you get to do that! All in all,
it was a great time and I look forward to going at it hard again soon! 73/72

Had some time between taking care of the grand kids so I worked as many folks as I could.
Surprisingly, I ended up with a personal best score. It was not something I set out to
do. I was not QRP this WES (my amp was getting lonely) but was very happy to be able to
work so many QRP stations. I was also very happy to see so many high member numbers -
John KJ4ZFE #7914 was my highest. Also worked quite a few members with numbers below 1000
that I had never worked before. As always it was great fun. My thanks to the folks who
do the work for the club and make all the fun possible and to all for the contacts. vy 73

I wasn't able to devote as much time as usual to this WES but it was great fun while I was
on. I usually use a 40M double Inv. Vee at 25ft but decided to build a 40M wire vertical,
hang it in a tree and use my 6' chain link fence as a ground for the WES. It did ok with 23
contacts on 40M but when compared to my Inv Vee on receive it was a little worse most of the
time. I didn't hear any DX on 40M so the vertical may work better for that. I want to thank
Bill-NT9K for all his work over the years. This is a great club and I really appreciate all
of those who work behind the scenes to keep it going.

Great time as always. On Friday I fab'd and put up a three element Collinear array for 15
mtrs, and it seemed to be working ok Sat afternoon. Attached photo shows the middle
element and the two vertical phasing lines. Not many WES'ers heard on 15 mtrs on Sun at
my QTH in NE--skip seemed long. Thanks Bert, F6HKA, for a QSO on 15. Looking forward to
the next WES in June.

Only 26 QSO for this WES but good result for my SKCC awards :
one new DXCC country : Hawaii (KH6ZM),
two new US states : Oklahoma (KK5J) and Hawaii,
and six new SKCC numbers in the log !
In addition to that, I was very proud to be called by a SKCC oldtimer : N6WK, SKCC # 3T !
It was also nice to made contacts on 20m and 40m with W1PNS/qrp (5 watts) with fb signal.
Again a pleasure to have a share and my Lionel J-36 bug was also happy to take part in
this monthly event !

Had a great time !! Conditions were much better than the last 2 weeks. Sorry if the Flex
1500 sounded strange at the beginning of the Sprint. My buddy Randy , KC9KHG spotted a
bit of a chirp so I did a reset of the SDR program and it went fine from there !!! Got
Max , KH6ZM on 15 meters the first nite (took 50 min to get through). 20 was also very
good with OH7QR , F6HKA , G4LWM and Feco , HA8KW. Some regulars I didnt hear anywhere.
And got to work Gordon , N6WK after not hooking up for a long time !!! As always a great
group and a fun bunch to be with ! Thanks !!! Rig here a Flex 1500 , 5 watts to a
ZeroFive 40m vertical and used the Vizkey Vertical.

Fun as always. MOst interesting QSO's were digging out Dan, W9DLN, S1 on 20m; and helping
to take some of that shine off Max's, KH6ZM, new "C", on 10m.

WA5BUC Operated by: Fred, 6692 from TX

Came home from Mother's Day activities and turned on the FT-817. It was tuned to 10 meters.
The only signal on the band was KH6ZM, Max. I had to listen to his call several times
before I realized he was not going to add "/5 nextdoor". What a signal! The "new" antenna
here was my re-oriented 100' end-fed wire. Went from N/S to E/W. Too few Q's to tell any
overall difference just yet. 72's from Houston.

W9DLN Operated by: Dan, 3635T from WI

Very exciting WES. Conditions were great and the DX was pretty consistant. Five
continents were worked, 13 DX countries and 23 DX QSOs, and all but one were SKCC
members! All but 7 states were worked. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

Mother's Day seemed to keep some of us away. I noticed some of the regulars were
missing. I heard W5ZR and worked W7GVE but no sign of Russ or Jim. Missed both NE and
MT.

Special thanks once again to K2RFP for the SprintLogger and W3UK for the Sked Page. I
couldn't have this kind of fun without you guys! Also very special thanks to NT9K who
got this started all those years ago. Great idea Bill and THANKS!!!

Hope to see you all next month. Maybe then I'll be in the new shack... Maybe.

20 meters, nice signals from all that I worked.
Station run-down: Kenwood TS 940 at 50 watts. Sloper for 40 and C3SS beam for 15 & 20.
Navy Flameproof & Annie Bug for the qso's. Worked one non-member; hope that station
joins us!

I am recuperating from rotator cuff surgery so I didn't feel up to par this weekend.
Recovery time for this type of surgery is months, not weeks. Divided my radio time
between the 7QP and the Sprint. And with the pain medicine, it was dicey at best. All
logging was done with Dick's Sprint Logger and I had only one arm to type. Participation
this month was down it seemed. Mother's Day I suppose. Thanks for the contacts and see
you all in the Tuesday sprint on the 25th. 73 Paul NG7Z

working well for me around 0500Z as I was lucky enough to snag Bert - F6HKA in France and
John - VK4TJ in QSD. It was a busy weekend for me and would have liked to work the WES
more. I did work NG7Z and W3RT while operating W7G at Golden Spike Special Event

My Homemade 20m qrp loop. The coax stub provides the proper capacitance for tuning.
Voltages are very high on the loop so this coax stub is good for about 3 watts. Bandwidth
is about 10 kc due to the small copper loop conductor size. I attached this loop to my
deck but loops only need to be about 1/2 the distance of the loop diameter above the
ground.

Based on one built by HB9MTN, my 20M C-Pole antenna was hastily put together for May WES.
Using hook-up wire, zip-ties, string, PVC & CPVC pipe, a 13ft. Crappie pole and misc.
junk-box stuff, it went up in a couple hours. Not near as pretty as Ed’s but the first
test QSO Friday night rewarded me with a 559 on 75W into European Russia with UA4YA.
During WES, in addition to continental QSOs, contacts were made into France, Finland,
Alaska, and Hawaii. I'm pleased enough to rebuild it into a more substantial and
permanent additional antenna. I had to miss seven hours on Mother's Day but had great
straight key fun as usual. You can do a web search on Crappie Pole antenna or HB9MTN for
info on the C-Pole antenna.

Sunday bands seemed pretty long. Collected a lot of first-time-for me numbers. Great WES!

I had a great time in this WES. I cobbled together a 100-foot flat top (dipole), fed
with a homebrew open wire feeder to a remote tuner. From there to the shack I used a
length of RG-8X. From the reports I was getting, it worked quite well. I may turn it
into something more permanent in the future. I managed to work some DX, and also got two
new states. Thanks to all who contacted me and also to the organizers who made this
possible.

Fun WES as always. Bands were great but time was short for me. Four hours was all I could
through at it. Enjoying Mother's Day with my 98 Year Young Mom. That was a hoot! Strongest
signal was Feco at 40 over!! Big signal Feco! Lot of DX and was tickled to catch my old
friend Walt, LW3EX on 10 meters, Great to hear you Walt. Caught Max in HI on two bands, 10
and 20. That is always a treat at QRP level. Oscar in MX surprised me last night too. I
think Bert and Bernard were manning 40 meters... :-)
I used my fresh built K2 at 3-5w into the 4 band no-tuner doublet I build at 33 feet . For
80 meters I used the new PAR EndFedz EF-80. Worked great!
Thanks to all and Happy Mother's Day to all the Mom's out there.

Got very lucky in the wee hours of Sunday and caught Max, KH6ZM on 40 meters. This was
with my KX1 at 4 watts, and my Buddipole Vertical in the front yard ! My first Hawaian CW
contact, and another for my WAS list !
The 20 meter band started getting bad for me here in the afternoon, picked up a few more
stations, but that was it. Didn't do near as well, as last month, but had fun, and that
what it's all about ! I really enjoy this QRP CW, thanks to my contacts, and we'll look
for everyone on the bands next WES ! 72/73

I didn't have a new antenna but after 6 weeks of topping, trimming and cutting down trees
around the "back 40", my 130' CF Zepp and the KLM-34A @ 50' are finally in the clear and
not touching or near any branches or beaming into a a group of 60' tall pine trees only a
few feet away.
Band condx were up and down but I felt that the WES activity was down this month. Sat
evening was good on 20 but most activity was some sort of contest going on. 40 meters on
Sunday afternoon was just about devoid of signals.
I did work KH6ZM on 15 meters and KH6G on 20 - not bad for 5 watts.
I ran 5 watts for the event with my TT Omni VII and used my JH Bunnell J-36 bug for the
first time. That bug is hard to slow down, even with 2 weights - about 25 wpm minimum, so
I used the WW2 Telefunken German straight key and a Vibroplex Champion too.
The bands were quieter (less QRN) than they have been for the last several events. I guess
Mother's Day had a lot of Ops tied up for awhile - I know I was. 73, Dave

to an old MFJ 16010 tuner witch gave me a real flat match on 40 meters. I used the wire

The WES motivated me to get out in the rain and string up my first antenna at our new
home, a doublet cut for 40 meters. I made it from from patched-together TV twin lead and
#14 stranded, all salvaged from many past antenna projects. Although obstructing branches
held this first effort to less than 20 feet off the ground, it played well enough to snag
FRA, HI, AK, and many states throughout CONUS. After suffering 6 months of horrendous
man-made noise at our rental house, the silence between signals at this location was
indescribably sweet.

Sensitive guy that I am, on-the-air fun was limited to only a few hours between Mother's
Day activities. Each contact was a pleasure, and I'm only sorry that a couple of calling
stations were just too weak for me to copy. I'll blame the low antenna for that.
Although the honey do list is still long, I hope to have wire in the tree tops before the
next WES. 73 until then.

A fun sprint, as always. Thanks to everyone for being so friendly and helpful. Usually I
only have time for 15 to 20 QSOs per sprint, but I mainly do it for the fun anyway.

Can I make a suggestion? I don't find endless CQs to be very helpful. What I'm listening
for is your call to see if I need to work you or have already done so. A couple of CQs,
followed by WES, followed by your call given once or twice is usually sufficient. If I
don't get it the first time I can always answer with a partial and a question mark
followed by my call, or I can wait for you to call again. Makes things go a little faster.
Just my opinion, for what it's worth.

I have been having issues with my tri-band beam. With 20m being so good lately,I'm told,I
knew I would need that band for the WES.So Tuesday I put up a 20m inverted-V. I had an
old PVC cap (for the center) and a short length of 3/4" PVC (for the ends),and some wire
in the junk box.Dug around and found some eye bolts. Had to make a run to the local ACE
for Brass hardware.I've made so many wire antennas...well...wrong,I decided to try to get
one right on the first try.Based on past experiences with inv.-V dipoles,I cut the wire a
little short to start with. It's resonant at 14.100!! Close enough.I'm glad I made it as
that was the band I made most of my contacts on! Oh,I should mention,I did test it out in
the SKSE on Thursday...made 3 contacts!
High point of the WES was working Max & Walt on 10m...Thanks guys! Got my best score to
date this month! The bands were packed and seemed to be in fair to good shape for the
weekend. Thanks to all...most fun I've had on the radio in a while.

Not a lot of time but very fun as always...perseverence paid off with Max(KH6ZM)and Feco
(HA8KW). Sorry for the QSB at the end Dave (NE5DL), but that's the joy of 2xQRP!

N1DN Operated by: Phil, 6482T from CT

Glad to get some radio time at the end of WES. Fun as always. Thanks to everyone for the
contacts.

KA5TJS Operated by: Allen, 5172T from TX

Great WES for me even though I did have other things get in the way. Used the new 80 mtr
dipole fed with 300 ohm window line and seems to work better than the G5RV for receive.
High point was catching Pat F8BNU just before the end and finding out he was QRP. I was
using 40 wts to the dipole. Look for you all next month.

Finally have all my hobby stuff moved into my new room. Had to extend several of my coax
lines with 10 ft cables with barrel connectors.
Back on the air again.
Made a few contacts with Europe Saturday night. WOW!

NØTK Operated by: Dan, 7431T from CO

Memorable QSOs with W0EA for a new SKCC state, F6HKA on 40m, KH6G who is to be commended for
all the repeats I asked for, and LW3EX and KH6ZM on 10m which indicates that the bands are
improving.

KC2KY Operated by: Neil, 3245T from NY

It's been a while since I was in a WES. This weekend we had great weather and great band
conditions. I did not do anything special with antennas; I used my 3 element STEPPIR on
20 thru 10, and modified G5RV for 80 through 30. The G5RV modification was to lengthen
the 450 ohm twin lead section from the traditional 31 feet to 36 feet, causing the
antenna to resonate in the 40 meter CW band without a tuner. Had a blast on 15 meters -
especially when John, VK4TJ, came back to my 5 watt CQ! It was nice to work Max, KH6ZM,
on 15 (he was very loud on 15 on Long Island) and LW3EX on 10 meters. Bert, F6HKA, had a
beautiful signal here also. 72 / 73 to all!

KØKEX Operated by: Rick, 5220T from MO

It was a busy weekend here, Sunday we were able to catch a few SKCC'ers before Mothers Day
& Birthday parties began. Bert F6HKA & Feco HA8KW on 15M was a great find. Thanks to all
for being there....see everyone on the next one....73 Rick

WD4SCZ Operated by: Emil, 556T from KY

As it was time for the Kentucky Derby, the salubrious effects of the obligatory Mint
Juleps limited the time on the rig.

KB1NHV Operated by: Art, 2775 from VT

Was thrilled to get HI (KH6ZN)my first contact on 40 meters and also Argentina (LW3EX) on
10 meters. Was able to work 5 bands also and nice to work them with little or no noise.
Even picked up a SKCC # on 30 but did not count in this sprint.

N5UZ Operated by: Rick, 7884 from TX

I was not able to operate as long as I would have liked, only about 1 hr at the start and
another hour toward the end. My SST-20 and it's 1w got quite the workout, and I decided
to exclusively use it with the home-made key I mounted to the chassis top. I heard HA8KW
and gave him a few calls, but I guess my lil' 1w just wasn't making the trip. KA2FIR must
have great ears and receiver, he gave me a 519 from NJ. Thanks to everyone who hung in
there with me for the repeats to confirm our QSO.

Base of my minimal 1/4 wave vert for 20m.

N3ADF Operated by: Jim, 6459 from MD

My 1st WES on 8 May 2011

Worked the following:
KH6ZM Max 727C HI on 15M with only 10w
W7GVE Ed 729T AZ on 20M 80w
N3PDT Doug 6861T MO on 20M 80w
K0ESX Damon 5862 UT on 20M 80w

QSOs 4 x 4 = 16
Bonus
Cent.1 x 5 = 5
Trib.2 x 10= 15
Bonus total= 20

Total 16 x 20 = 320

I think this is correct, I hope.
I had fun as everyone dropped down to my speed. Sorry I couldn't work longer.

VE3GTC Operated by: Graham, 6829 from ON

Only had a little time to play radio this weekend but I had a chance to work out the
straight key and my old vibroplex.

Just this past week I finished up replacing my old Off Center Feed Dipole with a new one.
The old one was getting a bit long in the tooth and I built a new one as a matter or
preventative maintenance. I used it for all 11 of my contacts and it works as well as the
old one. The OCFD is nothing fancy - approx 65 feet length in total off center feed at
about the 1/3 - 2/3 point and feed with a 4:1 balun. Resonant on 40, 20, 10 and 6 but with
the built in tuner in my FT-950 I can work all bands with one antenna except for 160 and
30meters.

I compared the calls of those I made contact with in my log and noted that several that
seemed familiar (not only in the sense of SKCC) and where in fact as I have worked them in
the past in one or another of the big CW contests.

Had lots of fun even though my time was limited. I must do a better job organizing my time
so that I can play longer next time.

cheers, Graham ve3gtc #6829

I didn't have more than 15min between different commitments this weekend. I consider myself
fortunate that I got to make 2 contacts in that time period. It made my day to be able to
practice my CW. REALLY looking forward to the next SKCC events later this month.

Unfortunately, I seemed not to be able to sit down at the radio this weekend, without being
interrupted by one thing or another. It did feel good, though, to use that brand new "C"!

My First WES! What a great experience! I was nervous about being in a contest knowing
everyone wants to make a quick QSO and move on to the next. I listened to a few, got the
rhythm down as best as I could and jumped in. Everyone was great and received some
positive emails and comments. Thanks everyone who took the time to allow me in this weekend!

Bands in good shape. Saturday night lots of 7th area QSO Party signals. Was able to work a
few SKCC stations on 3 different bands. Hope to meet members at Dayton again this year. Will
be tailgating at #709 near the Pub, so please stop by and say Hello. Hoping to take another
group photo around 3pm on Saturday. Same spot as last year....see you there!

K4UFT Operated by: Ted, 4289T from SC

Great WES!!! Made contacts on all bands 10 through 80. Worked KH6ZM on 10 and 15.
Caught Bert, F6HKA, on 15. Couldn't believe it when I worked K4UFS, Rick in Alabama.

Didn't have a chance for a different antenna so stayed with same vertical. Icom 7000 @50
Watts. ChiCom Army key.

N2AUR Operated by: George, 5841T from NJ

Great WES! Wish I'd have had more time to devote to this one. Started off with KH6ZM Max
as my first contact, then an hour later hooked up with VK4TJ John (Both on 15M. First WES
where I didn't work half the hams in Ohio - I didn't even work one! Worked both Bert and
Bernard (F6HKA & F6DE) and GR0RDO John. Hey Urb, I guess someone found the Sunspot Switch!
No special antennas, just my 20M dipole in the attic and my ground hugging 40 / 15 M
dipole. See you all next month.

I managed to squeeze in an hour of operating late Sunday on 20M only. Propagation was
reasonably good to most areas of the country with Canadians VE3HNE, VE7LAJ, and VE7BGJ
making the log with good signals. KH6ZM's booming signal off the back of the beam was
the final entry. I hope I can spend more time and visit more bands on the next WES.

Limited air time. New homebrew vertical for 40/15 seemed to work well. Made at least one
contact with every rig in the shack. Worked Bert F6HKA and Feco HA8KW with boatanchors.
Max KH6ZM was the loudest signal on 15 & 10. Thanks to Bill NT9K for all his efforts.

Great sprint. My first of the WES. I loved it. My temporary. QTH is in a condo with a
strong HOA. My antenna is a wire dipole laying in a hedge between 2 story buildings. It
was cut for 20 meters with a set of 40 meter add on stingers.

KH6ZM Operated by: Max, 727C from HI

Enjoyed the WES. Conditions were quite good, especially on 10 and 15.

into a 25 ft. wire hoisted up along with old glory to the top of my 20ft. flag pole. I
dropped on the ground another 25 ft. wire for the counterpoise. I am proud to report that

Wow!!! I am so blown away by this awesome tribute, that I don't know what to say, but
Thank You, to Dick K2RFP for thinking of me. I have been so overwhelmed by this, I
couldn't find the words to post here, even after a couple days to think about it. During
the past 5 years, I got to work with so many great people and Dick was one of them. He has
done so much for the SKCC and the WES. Things many of you will never know about or
remember. So, it comes from the heart when I say, Thank You Dick!

Of all the things I was able to accomplish while working for the SKCC, the WES has to be
the most important to me. When I started the WES, I never dreamed it would have grown into
what it is now! Back in the beginning, I even wondered if it would survive. I mainly
wanted to create an event with something for everyone, regardless of skill level, with a
time frame that would allow more people to be able to participate. Lots of people helped
me and should be recognized, like Kevin K4VD, Gene KL7GLL, Drew AF2Z, Joe K8JP and John
AI4RE. Many others too, to many to list here, but most of all Dick K2RFP for taking it
over and making it better. I've never missed a WES sprint, not one! So, with the good
Lord's help, I hope the SKCC and WES will live forever, long after I am gone and just
maybe people will remember me and my work! What more could any man want, than that?
Thank you - 73 God Bless - Bill NT9K..

Didn't have a lot of air time this time around but it was nice getting to work a few
stations during the WES. Conditions were not too good here. Picked up a few new numbers
and even got KH6ZM in Hawaii this time around on 15M. Set a goal to work the same number
of stations on each band and made it. Six on 15M, six on 20M and six on 40M.

Hope all had a nice Mothers Day!
