The Special SKCC Member for the April 10, 2011 WES is Andy, VE7LAJ, SKCC# 6611C. He will be operating from Creston, BC, Canada.

In the past the SKCC has celebrated Marconi's bithday in the April WES. We will do that again in 2011. Visit the International Marconi Day website here:
IMD Homepage

To claim extra bonus points for this WES, on your notepad write: "Guglielmo Marconi, April 25, 1874". As you work stations during the WES, use the call letters from the station to cross off the letters and numbers in the name and birthdate. Use each letter/number from a call sign only once but you can use them again if you work the same station on another band. The results submit page will ask you how many letters and numbers you have crossed out. The analysis program will award you five bonus points for each one. (Please don't multiply your entry by five, let the analysis program do it.)

I only played for a bit, but fun as always! CW is the best thing on radio, and within
that is SKCC, without a doubt. Thanks everyone.

VKK4TJ Operated by: John, 4474T from Australia

Tower work for a neighbour ham got me off to a late start, but I was happy to see Europe
well represented again.

Thanks all for the fun KJ4LEN for you last minute 104 points... Had a great time as
always :) Thanks Hugh

KØLWV Operated by: Larry, 3571 from MO

Amazing I didn't work any stations with the letter "i" in there call sign for a clean
sweep of the extra bonus.

I wish every Sunday was WES sprint time.

WIØS Operated by: Kieth, 2048T from MN

Was thrilled to work John VK4TJ on 40 meters around 1217Z with the dx60/hq110 and dipole.
I thought my ears were playing tricks on me. Another fun WES that I didn't spend a lot
of time at but has fun with the old gear. Getting better at zero beating the two rigs, a
real learning curve, 73 Kieth 2048t

It was a good QSO party. Nice break from yard work! 73, Don W7GB

KQ1P Operated by: John, 5068 from ME

Good conditions and the nicest weather yet this year on a weekend in our neck of the
woods! The snow is melting fast now. Managed to squeeze in a measly 3 QSO's, better than
none at all. 73

N9QU Operated by: Leo, 3464T from WI

Last WES entry for me from Wisconsin. Moving in May to Texas and hope to be on the air
from Amarillo by the next WES. Thanks to all. It has been fun! 73

K6HTN Operated by: Kate, 5405 from CA

Woke up Saturday determined to use my bug in the WES. Practiced awhile & it seemed to go
well. OK ... NOT. I had several embarrassing contacts where I could not get a string of
dits when I wanted it, or I got too many. Set the rig on sidetone only (no TX) & practiced
awhile more, perfectly. As soon as I got back on the air, my fist when down the tubes
again! Finally just gave up in favor of the J-38! The problem with the bug is more likely
than not nerves. It's sensitive to exactly how strongly I hit the lever, in addition to
timing. Feeling a little frustrated. WES is very good practice, though, as usual.

Enjoyed working the optional phrase - I'll remember Marconi's birthday now !
...
Used my LTA sideswiper throughout. Different feel than last month's homebrew.
...
THX to all for the QSOs and to the organizers.

Was in at the start and finsished up at the end. Almost everything in between was eating,
sleeping and yard work. It was a long winter and good to get out in the fresh air and
get some exercise.

Always fun guys. I spent most of saturday working on the old house but got to do some
operation on sunday. Very poor condx here. Lots of weak signals and QSB. Still had a good
time though...73

W9SAY Operated by: Chas, 1158T from IL

Great Sprint. First time I worked a *Special Station.* Thanks Andy.
Wasn't able to snag a call with a P in it and only one with an I. So I failed the P and
one of the Is. Maybe next year.

I actually used KEY LEGO for 5 QSOs.

KB1NHV Operated by: Art, 2775 from VT

Totally enjoyed the experience again. Both 40 and 15 were quite active. Noise on 40
made contacts quite difficult! Was pleased to work France and Spain and thrilled to work
a fellow VT station. Look forward to doing it again.

WAØBGV Operated by: Slim, 5465T from MO

Had to take time to go out and diagnose problems with my 40 meter antenna. Got it fixed
finally but there didn't seem to be as many signals on the bands as usual. worked fellow
Missourians N0LWV, Larry, N0UMP,Bill and WD0ECH, Mitch. Thanks fellows. de Slim

Bands were very noisy last night and today they seemed very quiet. Weird! K-2 held up
but lost a computer. Not having good luck with electronics this year. Thanks to you
that had a hard time copying. I appreciate you hanging in there. 72/72 Phil

Not much operating time this sprint. Band conditions seemed marginal. Highlights were
contacts with Bert F6HKA and Andy VE7LAJ. 73.

K3NCO Operated by: Marc, 6144T from MD

Well, cable wrapped around beam and it is now stuck at due south, so not much work on
high bands. Didn't get on until Sunday, and using the 80/40 inverted vee on 20 and the
40m dipole on 15 didn't produce much activity. Later in the day 40 was hopping. Thanks
for all the QSOs - 73, MarC

Another tough Sunday, only got to work from around 9am today till 5pm local here. I did
get to work Andy, VE7LAJ as my number two contact on the KX1 and 3.5 watts ! Even made it
out to Mark, K3MSB in PA with the K1 and 5 watts ! Put the KX1 back to work for my last 3
contacts of the day...IN/WA/CO, again at 3.5 watts. Only worked 20 meters, tried 40 and
80 before the end, but no luck for me this time !Had a good time, my sending is improving
some, still need more work on my copy thou. Thanks to all the ops that came back to me,
see everyone at next months WES !! This QRP is tough, but a hell of a lot of fun !!

I had a great time. I used my FT101EX and gave it a good workout with 113 QSO's. I just wish
it had a narrower filter. Thanks to all that answered my call and to those I couldn't pull
out of the qrn and qrm, I'm sorry. Maybe next time. My thanks to a great group of Op's. Ray

Was a very busy weekend here. Had the 20M thru 10M quad down for maintenance, and spent
most of the weekend working on that. In between work, spent time on only 40M this time.
Thanks to all the 40M ops who gave me contacts! 73 Bert

K8QI Operated by: Barry, 2795T from FL

On Friday night I finished building an Elecraft KX1 so I thought the WES would be a good
way to check out the rig and learn its operation. I quickly discovered that I needed a
stereo plug for the straight key jack. Rather than using patch cords to the stereo
plug supplied with the kit, I turned my Bencher on its side and set the key input
to "Hand" on the KX1. A little ackward, but I got on the air. I spent some of my
time playing with the rig controls and so only made 20 contacts with my 4 watts. I did
get an 'atta-boy' when Bert, F6HKA answered my call with others calling. With the other
CW contests on this weekend, the bands were a little crowded, but the adjustable filter
on the KX1 helped me sort out the callsigns. I was limited to 20 & 40 meters since I
haven't built the 30/80 meter option.
Thanks to all you with the "Gud Ears" who were able to "dig out" my 4 watt signal.

Was a 20m/40m sprint for me. Called CQ on 15 and 10 into empty bands. Nice to see 20m open
well after sunset. Enjoyed QSOs with Bert F6HKA (well after his sunset) and N6WK (SKCC#3T).

W8BFX Operated by: Dennis, 7765 from WA

Great group, Great fun, thanks to all.

WA2JSG Operated by: Curt, 3018T from NJ

Had a lot going on this weekend, so only an hour or so to participate. 8 contacts, all
QRP, all 40m. Rig IC-703 turned down to 5 watts off a 12v battery. Butternut vertical
(elevated). English Kent straight key.

NE5DL Operated by: Dave, 5081T from TX

Another fun WES. K2 at 5W, Hex Beam and Vertical. Hi-Mound side swiper. Band conditions
seemed up and down

N2AUR Operated by: George, 5841T from NJ

QRN was brutal on all bands, but what else is new? Had a great time with my new key, and
worked lots of new SKCC stations. I think I was in demand because every one of the
letters in my call was useable toward the bonus, but calls with the letter "I" were sadly
lacking. But, what would the WES be if not for the challenge?

VA3NU Operated by: Larry, 5215 from ON

40 not bad but high QRN at times. 20 wasn't there for me. Still a fun time as always.

W7GVE Operated by: Ed, 729T from AZ

15 was a bit slow-- but the XYL recognized the fact that I was calling CQ WES and not
getting an answer--- As time goes by this event is getting better and better-- Its a
great way to get ones feet wet for the big high speed contests-- will see you next month.

WA1VIL Operated by: Greg, 443T from MA

Too much fun! I still don't believe that DL9YCS copied my DX20 on 21150-thanks Joerg! After
that I pretty much hung out rockbound on 7120 and thanks to all the stations who called me
there! I only got one signal report with less than T9-have a feeling that people went too
easy on that! The Boat Anchor station was the DX20 and a Drake 2B to a G5RV or a 40 meter
OCF-the CW monitor was listening to the hum in the power transformer in the DX20 change
tone....gotta come up with something better. 73 to all!

Thanks to all who participated. Was happy to be able to work into Europe many times

the band to be on. 40 was dead. Had a lot of fun anyway and look forward to the next one.

It was another fun WES. I appreciate the hard work some QRO stations -- and a couple of
QRP stations -- had pulling my 5-watt signal from out of the hash. You know who you are!

Talk about luck!! Two 40 Meter contacts with FT-817 at 0.5 Watts to a 40' wire laying
across the roof. FT-817 operating from internal battery pack with 8 NiMH AA cells.
Vibroplex "Code Mite" key.

Took the FT-817 out on the patio just to listen while enjoying the great weather here in
upstate SC. Heard lots of loud signals and noise on 40. Cut the RF gain way back to bring
some of the noise down. Gave several calls, not expecting to make contact. Thanks to
K3NCO, Marc in MD, and K4GM, George in VA, for pulling me out of the QRN and QRM.

This was the most funnest (if that's a real word) WES ever for me!! Now if the upper
bands will just wake up ...

The bands seemed to be in pretty good shape and our Special SKCC member, Andy, had a
great signal. I only put in 3 hours and sure enjoyed it. Also enjoyed working some old
friends too.

Tried QRP this time around running 4-1/2 Watts on 40 Meters with crystal controlled
homebrew 6AH6/5763 rig completed just this morning. Did much better than expected,
considering only three hours available to operate. Thanks to all who bore with my peanut
whistle and forgetting to throw TX switch from time to time. Makes one appreciate QSK.

Thanks for all the QSO's folks. And a special tu to the ones that had to repeat your
call under poor conditions. Had a lot of fun and already planning the next one. Note to
self, don't rearrange the station right before a contest, leave the keys where you had
them and your arm won't hurt.

Thanks to those who stuck with me when I had trouble with calls. For some reason I just
took it easy on this one. I guess my get up and go, got up and left. Only ran a couple of
times. Thanks to VE7LAJ for bonus. Thanks to all in SKCC that makes this possible.

K4GM Operated by: George, 7241T from VA

As always had a great time. Conditions seemed poor but I still managed my best score so far
which completely surprised me. Had a lot of other matters going on this weekend which
limited my time for BIC. Was nice to work several Europeans and to have 15m open for a few
Qs. Thanks to all who gave me contacts. 73, George K4GM

20 and 40m were bread-and-butter bands; 15 and 10m very poor this time out. Took a quick
look at 80m in the early morning but raised nobody. I felt that band conditions were poor
generally. Good to see so many familiar calls --- but there were lots of new numbers and
calls too. Thank you everybody for an enjoyable event. A big thank-you to Andy, VE7LAJ,
the special station, for finding me on Sunday. Bill, N5RKD

W3NP Operated by: Dave, 3182T from WV

After watching the WX forecast for the weekend, I expected noisy condx on 40 and 80 and I
was not disappointed. What I did not expect was that many of the signals that I heard here
in WV on 40 Saturday eve were so weak. I did hear a lot of stations giving 599 reports,
but very few that strong here. Even K0LUW was weak. I did stay on 20 Saturday until it
went out. I knew my 4.6 watts was not going to do very well with the noise on 40 and 80 so
I waited for Sunday afternoon and did manage to work a few more on 20 and 15 as well as on
40. Worked Bert F6HKA on 20 and 15. Didn't have near the time to operate as I usually do,
but it was still enjoyable. Ten Tec Omni 7 at 4.6 watts with Vibroplex Champion circa 1963
along with the German Telefunken straight key. Is there a QSO party every weekend? Grrr!!
At least it was easy to pick out the SKCC participants with the nice easy going character
laden CW as compared to the frenzied contesters giving out all 599's and operating at what
seemed to be computer generated and copied code speeds.

never heard Andy VE7LAJ here. 5W, 80M horizontal loop at 25 feet with tuner.

frequency seems calmer QRN and QRM.
A very big thank you to John VK4TJ for his appeal and his patience, because my antenna was
directed to the U.S.. (hi)
The traffic conditions here:
YAESU FT2000, Beam 3 element Cushcraft A3S, Navy flameproof key, pwr 5 watts max.
In all, 13 stations contacted, including 7 states, MA, NY, IN, WI, TX, NH, PA.
5 countries including France with Bert F6HKA, Finland Timo OH5FNI, Australia with John
