K1LEE Operated by: Lee, 7246 from CT

This WES was lots of fun, as usual. Thanks to all who copied me when I used the homebrew key
arrangement. I really had to polish the cymbal to make good contact, and even then it was fuzzy
sometimes. If I were to do it again, I'd use a trumpet - much easier to work. And no, I wasn't playing "76
Trombones" - just trying to produce decent code. Vy 73 to all, and hope to work you next month,

These things get better and better each time! Great sprint, great band conditions.
Used my Icom IC-703 (now with 300hz cw filter), 5 watts to a Butternut vertical
(elevated), using 12v battery jumper box. No fancy home-made key, just my big English
Kent straight key. See y'all next month in the WES!

Very nice Sprint. Started slow Saturday evening but came alive later. Getting up at 2 AM
yielded about 10 Qs. The higher bands really came alive this weekend. Propagation is
getting better. It will be nice later this year. Thanks for all that worked me. No
special key, just tried my American Morse KK1 mini-key. I nice little portable key and
worthly on use in the shack. 73 Joe

watt and had a blast doing it. Have not seen 10,15, and 20 so open in a long time and it
stayed open very nicely, bet some scores are going to go off the chart. Thanks again to
all the great ears out there and will keep it going next time.

Like always, allot of fun! This was my first sprint since December. The first sprint
since operating K3Y. And the first sprint using my new Spark! A very nice key! I wish I
would have ordered one sooner! I worked Russ, WA0YEI on 3 bands. It was also nice
working a contact on 15,(Russ). I worked 80,40,20, and the one on 15. Things might be
shaping up! It was also nice hearing and working George, N2JNZ! Thank you to the
volunteers that make this happen!

Didn't have the time I wanted for QSO's or to come up with an innovative junkbox key, so
I grabbed what I could make a key out of in less than 5 minutes - tweezers, the lead from
my CPO and some heat shrink tubing - and VOILA a workable key. That's what I love about
group, it inspires innovation! See ya next month.

40M and F6HKA on 15M. Didn't realize the home made key theme so my novice days J-38 did
all the work.

I only had a couple of hours at the end of the WES to play radio but I still managed to
squeak out some RF. My WMD tonight was a Flex 1500 running at 5w into an Par-Endz Fed at

Thanks to all those who managed to hear my little signal and read my rusty fist :)

I had a great time. Thanks to Marilu Daniel, the Middle School Social Studies teacher at
Windsor Academy in Macon, GA. for loaning me the Signal Electric key that I used during
this WES. In addition, I used my Vibroplex bug and the home-brew key shown in the photo;
it used no tape or solder. The clipboard held the two rulers and the CD case together. The
wires were wrapped around the rulers, pennies were inserted between the wire and ruler,
and each was wrapped in aluminum foil to hold everything in place. I would not want to use
it for long, but it worked. 73!

Prior commitment ruled out Saturday evening opportunity on 80. 20 and 15 were so-so, but
40 carried the load. Hopped on 7.114 for last 30 minutes "just in case" and created a
pileup. Holy ! Now I know how DX feels.

Had some time during the day Sunday, spent some time on 20 and 40, bands sounded pretty
good to me. As always I had a great time, worked quite a few high numbers. Keys this

The Homebrew Challenge inspired me to build a sideswiper. Hacksaw blade, full length, a
binder clip to allow angle adjustment (plus, I couldn't find a more permanent fixing item in
my garage) and a paperclip for the contact point. Of course, a Sonoma County wine cork to
make the grip. Close up photo of the cork end on QRZ. Really like the swing of it.
..........For me, FUN is spelled WES.........
Thanks SKCC folks for the QSOs, and to Dick K2RFP for running it.

No special key used. Just the old Signal Electric R-48. Knew it was going to be a good
WES when I hit 100 QSOs before midnight. W5ZR set the bar pretty high though. 16K is
prettty high to jump. We would have to wait and see. With excellent band conditions and
superb SKCC operators I might have a chance. By noon the first of my records began to
fall. I see by the list above it was a record-breaking WES for many of us.

Missed ID, SD, DE and HI. Maybe next time. Thanks for DX F, D, EA, HA, I and SM and
four VE provinces. Also thanks for one band DL9YCS! Lots of YL's on too. Thanks for
QSOs Karen, Paula, Ginnie and Donna.

Next month I should have a new location for the shack. I should also be removing about
30 feet of RG-8 going to the dummy load antenna. We'll see how that works.

Again, special thanks to K2RFP for making the cat and bird dance once and to K3UK for
further refining the Sked Page. I could not rack up these scores without the help of you
two guys. See you all next month! 73, Dan

and also the bonus OP Joerg DL9YCS .With a better ant on 10-15-20 hope to make more dx

I only got in a couple of hours on this one, but managed to make contacts on 160m-10m. I
even tried 6m, but just wasn't lucky enough for it. Lots of fun creating a key, too. I
read the March WES rules just as I sat down to operate on Saturday night and saw that we
were meant to create our own keys. Well, I looked around the shack and figured an old
homebrew loading coil made of aluminum tubing would have about the right spring to it. So
I clamped down one end of it planning to work the other end against a piece of aluminum
foil taped to the desk. Add a couple of alligator clips and, presto, instant key. It
worked great plunking along at 17 wpm and, in fact, the feel was much nicer than my other
keys. I might just keep this thing clamped to my desk for a while. Thanks for the QSOs
and see you next time. 73, Chad(d) KK7S

past due to grab a hold of a key again and play radio again...Boy am I glad I did! , While
I didnt operate the entire sprint the amount of time I could sneak away and get in proved
once again how fun and exciting the Weekend Sprints really are...The bands were fantastic
and as usual so were all the OP's...I alternated between 500 mw's and 1 watt. Total of 11
contacts in the mw range and 15 @ 1 watt and there was on to Bert F6HKA at 2.5 watts (I
didnt count that contact in my totals) What a great surprise it was to work Joerg DL9YCS
with 1 watt on 20 meters! Just when I didnt think it could get any better I worked Bert
F6HKA on 15 with 500mw's and got a 539 report! I now have 4 countries on mw power
output...And if that wasnt enough....I got to cap it all off with a new state for my long

I wasn't able to spend the weekend on the sprint, but managed to eke out about 3 1/2 hours
total operating time. 20M and 15M were the best bands for me, but a few contacts were
made on 80M/40M on Saturday night. I wanted to work 10M, but my beam seems to have
developed a trap problem on that band. I did hear some SKCCers up there.

DX caught this time included FG8AR and KP4GL plus VE7, VE5, and VE1. QSO's with WD0ECO
and N0UYN were made on three bands (80, 20, and 15M). It's always fun to work the special
calls like K1LEE (op-Lee), W4KRN (op-Karen), and that scary W1OOO in MN. Thanks for a fun
WES!

FT1000MP, Alpha 78, 1 KW, TH6DXX, dipole, zepp, inverted vee. Pretty good conditions 80
through 15M. Good European DX contacts on 15. Nothing heard on 10 and didn't listen to
160. Thanks for all QSOs. Please look for the 50th Annual GA QSO Party the second full
weekend in April. KU8E and I will be QRV as W4R/M in many GA counties. Work one by one
calls in GQP to spell out G-E-O-R-G-I-A for special recognition. 73, John, K4BAI.

VE3FUJ Operated by: Brion, 4936T from ON

I started on 40, the background noise was low so I stayed there. As usual I had fun and
everything went smoothly. I had a couple of Qrp stns. WA2JSG and WA9NPS They had good
signals. Then a QRPp from OH came on the Scene, he too had a fair signal but for Qsb
N8AL/QRPp 100mW That one MADE my day, Thanks AL. BRION

KØKEX Operated by: Rick, 5220T from MO

Great "WES" as usual, thanks Joerg DL9YCS for your effort and to all the SKCC bunch.
My time divided between the WES and a remolding project. Looking at the comments looks
like I missed the 10M action but 15M was good here...sure enjoyed the time spent and
reading everyone's comments.
Hope to see all the SKCC members in the KC/MO area at the Shrine Hambash, April 23, 2011.

WS9E Operated by: Joe, 3859C from WI

This was my first sprint since I earned my "C" suffix. It was great to hear all the
Tribunes on the air. I'm almost half way to "T". I ran the Omni 6+, dipole and Speed-x
this time. Bands were up and down Sunday afternoon, but a lot better than some recent
Sprints. I think the sunspots are coming back! Thanks to all for the contacts.

KF7ATL Operated by: Garth, 5914T from UT

I noticed several instances of a station opening up on top of someone without listening. I
understand that this happens sometimes, but let's listen first and not cause QRM!

VE5BCS Operated by: Harold, 3946C from SK

The band was good up here but no time family gathering. Both were fun cunext wes.

W2DEC Operated by: Urb, 6668T from NJ

Band conditions were great.

W3NP Operated by: Dave, 3182T from WV

Some of the best band conditions in the past year on the 80, 40, and 20, and for longer
than that on 15 and 10. I made quite a few contacts on 15 including Bert in France and
even a few Q's on 10. Now if someone would have answered my CQ on 160 Sat nite, I would
have had contacts on all bands for the first time. I was testing out my LP-100A wattmeter
and just got it on-line about 30 minutes into the sprint on Sat eve. Very nice meter for
QRP work and the OHR WM-2 was very close in accuracy. Wasn't able to operate as long as
usual, but still worked a lot of stations at my 4.54 watt power level. Some of the other
qrp stations were booming in here and Tony W2HWW's 1W was loud. Used my Omni 7 with the
Junker straight key and Vibroplex Champion for the entire event. No homemade junk key this
time - just the "Junker"!! Had a great time as usual and worked a lot of the newer members!

LP-100A Digital RF Wattmeter reading 4.54 Watts & agreeing closely with the OHR WM-2

N5XE Operated by: Carl, 6307T from OK

Worked one station, then had other committments that prevented me from operating. Hope
all have fun with improving band conditions. I'll have to do better next time.

KA5VZG Operated by: Alan, 6264T from TN

Fun as always. Great pictures of some very imaginative keys/operators!

W4TMW Operated by: Tom, 6184T from GA

The bands seemed to be in very good shape for this WES with lots of activity on 10M. I
operated 3 different times for a total of 5 hrs. The highlight for me was a 'JA'
answering my CQ on 15M with a huge sig, which really caught me off guard, unfortunately
he was not a member. 73 to all......Tom

WA8OKR Operated by: Bill, 3200T from OH

Long dry spell, it was good even if I only had time to do a short period. Looking forward
to Other events and more time to participate.
Thanks to everybody for your hard work.

I really enjoyed the new features in the schedule page.

This wes gave me the chance to use the cootie key made from a parts bug I bought on ebay.
I'm sure the meter helped as I didn't get asked for any repeats. HI HI

F5DE Operated by: Bernard, 6247T from France

I enjoyed my 15th WES, as usual.
QSO special bonus station DL9YCS on two bands,
two bands also for OH5FNI and S52CC,
then four bands QSO with KO1U, tu Mark,
and six bands QSO (3.5 to 50 MHz) with my neighbourg Bert F6HKA (abt 100 kms).
Awaiting for the next WES, I Hope to meet you all soon for some brag QSO.
Equipment here : about 50 watts into a Hy-Gain DX-88 multiband GP antenna,
Vibroplex bug model "Champion" and WWII "Junker" german straight key for QRS.
73 everybody !

NW2K Operated by: Dean, 7330T from NY

All bands were alive. Used the Springwater Special Jigsaw Paddle, complete with polished
40 S&W contact. Originally a sideswiper, but one needs coordination for that and that
piece of brass is in the scrap bin. Thanks to Dick (K2RFP) and Andy (K3UK), fellow
NYers, for their significant efforts. The stats and sked page really enhance the fun.

Good conditions here for this sprint but attack of hives kept me out of action for good
part of allotted time.
Thanks to Dick, K2RFP for the sprint logger. If you don't use it you should take a look.
See you all next sprint.

Maybe next month I'll have the weekend off.

Used my old straight keys from my days 49 years ago as KN1VKW and K1VKW. Decided to go
QRP this WES and just got on as time permitted so not a big score, but a lot of fun. 72,

Always fun. Nice openings on 10 and 15 meters were a surprise. Lowest SKCC no. worked was
Scott,N3JJT,255T. Highest was Dean,NW2K,7330T.Back-to-back and 1 min. apart on 80M.
Thanks Bert, F6HKA for my only DX QSO. Used the IC756ProIII and Bencher RJ-1 key.

K8TAO Operated by: Rich, 7459 from MI

Hello, Quite a turnout this sprint. I decided on a new tactic this my second sprint;
I'd find a vacant freq. & call CQ. I found out that I wish I had some narrow filters for
my old Kenwood TS930S.Was pretty hard to pick one out of the crowd at times. But if I
sent part of a call & a question mark people would politely wait for an answer .then;
wait their turn. I think I wore my arthritic old fist out; by the end I was having cramps
& my hand was plenty stiff HI HI! Contacts with PR,FRA,BC,MB ,SK & a couple of new states
were kind of nice too.I had QSO's with38 states ; not bad.I had fun & hope to hear you
all again. 73 & GL, RICH K8TAO

My first Event, didn't get to operate as much as i would have liked but enjoyed if very
much.

AC4RM Operated by: Robert, 7512 from SC

Interesting sprint. I only had a few hours to work it but picked up a couple of new
states, "T/C" and DX. Couple of QRP stations had nice signals even on my crappy antenna.
Thanks to all who answered my call.

W3OKC Operated by: Steve, 7186T from PA

The first time I put an effort into the WES. I still did'nt get as much operating time on
Sunday as I would have liked but I give it a good shot Saturday. I finally got an old
vibroplex bug off of ebay, its been along time since I used one but got alot of practice
during the contest, it was great I enjoyed spending time with you guys.

God Bless

Lots of activity on all bands. Made contacts on 80,40,20,15,and 10m.

KA5TJS Operated by: Allen, 5172T from TX

Almost mist it! I forgot this was the WES weekend till I tuned on 40 meters and heard
someone call CQ WES. I made a resolution I was going to make all 12 this year and almost
blew it. Got 6 for the record and thanks to those who helped me make my goal. Got one on
40 mtrs and 5 on 20. Wish I could have played longer. I will mark the next one on the
calender.

AF2Z Operated by: Drew, 2082T from NJ

This is more like it! Condx were excellent here-- the best yet for any SKCC sprint since
day one. 15m was behaving like a real band for once; usually it's pretty sparse for me.
Very few DX though: only Bert F6HKA and Lluis EA3NO. It was very nice to work a variety of
stations from Canada including Andy VE7LAJ, Ken VE7KBN, Jerry VE5DC, Garry VE5SG, Rich
VE4DET (BC, Saskatchewan & Manitoba might as well be DX... I work them so rarely.) Even
got one or two of those rare MO stations... ha ha. Worked Russ K0LUW on four bands, but
that is easy with his great signal. My rig: K3 running 10 watts to 100-ft random wire;
Junker straight key.

KB1OIQ Operated by: Andy, 6265T from MA

I had fun using my recently repaired Elecraft K1 to make all of my QSOs this month. I
also used the Hi-Mound BK-100 bug that I purchased at a recent flea market. I managed a
couple of 2xQRP contacts - thanks Eldon and Doug! Also, thanks to Scott for his elmering.
I look forward to the next SKCC event. 73 de Andy

W3RT Operated by: Red, 3237T from PA

Little time to operate this WES, but enjoyed that time! Good operators, and favorable
conditions here in PA.

Used the Knwd 940 at 85w, sloper and beam, and the Navy Flameproof for all contacts.

Great to see so many newer numbers. Thanks to all.

KA1XC Operated by: John, 5188T from MA

Back on the air, first time from the new QTH in North Andover! Almost all my stuff is
still in boxes (and will be for some time) but I dug out the 756Pro3 and threw out a
couple of rolls of wire from the second floor shack window down to some brush to make a
40 meter "Vee" and was able to tune it up with the Johnson Matchbox. :^) Had fun making
a few contacts on Sunday as time permitted; key was my dad's old WWII J-38 code practice
key on a brass base. 73!

LW3EX Operated by: Walt, 3804T from Argentina

S&P style and no sked page help this time
Spent the evening hanging on 50MHz looking for TEP/F2 DX
Good prop on 6m to EU NA and Caribe. Got WP3C, TU Al.
Others were on 10 and 15m with HF radioblackout AGN (

NT9K Operated by: Bill, 1926T from FL

It kills me that I wasn't able to make a junk box key. This is my favorite WES theme and
this being the 50th WES, I had to at least make one QSO, sick or not. Thanks Dick, for all
your hard work to keep the WES growing and for keeping these cool themes! With some luck,
I hope to be doing better in another month or so? Until then, please have some fun for me!

VA2NB Operated by: Michael, 120 from QC

Many thanks to Steve, W3OKC for suffering through my first side-swiper QSO ! I used the paper clip cootie that I made
a month or two ago. After working Steve I decided that perhaps I wasn't quite ready for prime-time with this setup so I
switched back to my Czech straight key and my 1936 Vibroplex Martin Jr. for the remainder of my QSOs. It was also
my daughter's birthday weekend and we were headed up to our cottage for the week (March Break) so not much time
on the air for this WES but lots of fun anyhow. Cheers Michael VA2NB / VE3WMB

Very limited time to work the WES but I wanted to participate in the 50th. Worked 20 and

Late in submitting my score. Hope it get's accepted. It's not like I'm going to win the

Another busy weekend with little time to play radio. Thanks to all who heard my 3 watt sigs.

2EØETT Operated by: Thomas, 7344 from England

I didn't do well at all for this sprint. I was newly licenced with my new call and new
privileges (50W compared to 10W) so I had high hopes, but both time and propagation was
against me and in the end my only 2 SKCC contacts were from France. It seems the bands died
for USA as soon as the sprint started! On Saturday morning, my main antenna had fallen, and
by the time I got back from a ham rally Sunday and got my antenna back up I didn't have
time to pursue much.. Oh well, next month is bound to be better :) 73

KM1G Operated by: Rick, 7696 from MA

First time out, had much fun. Finally figured out what "C" and "T" mean; only recorded one, though I worked a few more
(smirk). This is terrific, got to use my lovely Kent. Can't wait for next time!

Had a small amount of time available for radio this weekend, but I enjoyed making a few
contacts toward my C.

W7JZE Operated by: Bill, 6053 from CA

Well I always wanted a junkbox key so I thought about how to make a REALLY junky junkbox
key for a couple of days, then about one hour before the contest I quickly assembled the
four raw items (nails, a hunk-a-wood, weather stripping, a beer can) from the garbage and
garage and in 20 minutes I was DONE! Viola! A work of junkbox art, if I do say so
myself :-) Special thanks to the Coors brewing company for the special design of the pop-
lid that allowed me to break it off, nail it through the can and then use it for a point
of electrical contact. Actually, the finished junk boxer worked so good, and actually
has such a good “feel”, that I have not disconnected it. 13 FUN(!) contacts on WES this
month and a new state to boot (TNX to Ko1U in Massachusetts). I’m loving this monthly
contest. Bill – W7JZE
