KB9YGD Operated by: Norm, 555 from IN

I worked only 1 qso in the wes and that was Wd4scz skcc nr 555t on 80m but at least i
partisipated.I used my ameco j-37 replica sk which i have mounted on a pice of 1x4 and i
took the router around the edges and stained it and put stickon rubber feet on the bottom.73
all de kb9ygd.

ACØPR Operated by: Mike, 7033T from ND

This is actually the first of two keys I made at around the same time, the other is even
more simplistic and used for my first month in SKCC. I decided to give this one a go for
WES this month. It went well although I was only operating for a couple of hours. Very
enjoyable as always. Thanks!

73,
Mike

The big brother of my usual hardware store HB key.

KØLWV Operated by: Larry, 3571 from MO

Nice to see 15 meters open up. WES is a fun contest.

W4HAY Operated by: Frank, 678T from TN

Used my old Junker, which is my "everyday" key. It was in excellent shape when I got it,
so didn't think I could honestly score it as a "restored" key. 20 & 15 were erratic
early, but settled down later in the day.

IK2SON Operated by: Tony, 5486T from Italy

Hello all this wes is also very good.
I used a homemade key sideswiper material of luck
I saw that is very good I have to do better and presentable he.. he.. he.. thanks to all
the next wes

KD8JHJ Operated by: Mike, 4877C from OH

I made this key about 15 years ago when I was a SWL. I copied the design from an add in
the back of a CQ magazine. The key in the add was brass but I made mine out of Honduran
mahogany with other tropical hardwoods and the knob I turned from American walnut
salvaged from an old church. It works great and I used it for 17 of 20 qso's. This WES
was the key's first time on the air. I was very happy to work EA1EVA for the first time
on 20M. Thanks for the QSO Javi. As usual the strongest signals were the two Berts
F6HKA and W5ZR. Thanks to all for another fb WES!

This has been by far the best sprint for me personally. 140 Q's and all my contacts were very
polite and fun to work. At times my fist was not working very well but everyone stuck with me
until all the info was passed.

THANK YOU my fellow SKCC OPs for a great WES...

Very busy weekend here, so not much time for the sprint. My first granddaughter (2 weeks

Nice WES, as always. Used my Icom IC-703 turned down to 5 watts using a 12v jumper battery
box. Antenna elevated vertical. My Cheese Block Paper Clip Key. (hi hi). Nice signals on
40m & 20m. Even made one on 10m. See y'all next time!

I was using my original Ameco key that I learned on and had as Novice in 1966! I was
banging it so hard at 0100 local Sunday that it came apart and I had to find the bearing
balls and restore it during the contest. Such fun. I won't claim any bonus points for
the Ameco-- I'm not sure it would quality. WA7DUH.

Didn't use a homebrew key because the one I built many years ago broke and it's in a parts

fair shape.

K7TKT Operated by: Brian, 6695 from ID

I was only able to get on for a few hours but had a great time. Thanks all.

The high point for me was working Mark (K3MSB) in PA from ID on 40m. My attic HOHPL is
really low and I was surprised it was able to make it. Thanks Mark. I was also excited
to work Al (K7NSW) on 20m. Since we are in the same town that had to be line of site.
Couldn't have been NVIS on 20.

The 80m doublet goes up tomorrow. Can't wait for next month!

This was a fun sprint. The activity level was very good. Every time I got on the bands
there was lots of WES going on. Made contacts on 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10M (finally).
Thanks to all who had qsos with me.

Had a lot of fun, the bands were good here. I used my homebrew side swiper most of the
time, then went from the bug to straight key. I heard lots of swipers, what music! Tks to

This was another fun Sprint. Thanks to the SKCC team that put this together and the
members that participate.

I want to especially thank K2RFP for his Sprint Logger. Dick, this was my first event to
use it and it worked GREAT!!!! It made the contest even more enjoyable to work and the
dupe checker is nice. Everyone should check it out. Thanks again Dick for providing
this - at no charge no less.

It's always fun to work some fellow MO operators. NE0S, K0MAF, finally got N0UMP, and
WA0BGV. Slim, we slipped in right under the cutoff!!!!

I used the SKCC Club Key and the Begali Spark. Both wonderful keys.

Thanks to all and CUL. 73 de Mitch

participated. Best wishes and 73.

N3EIN Operated by: Matt, 6742C from PA

I started this WES needing 3 more T's or C's for my own T and ended up with 32 more T's
and 3 more C's. It was fun getting the T with a modest rig/ant letting chance arrange the
QSO's. It took longer but was great fun. I also found that ragchewing between sprints is
rewarding as it's great to work friends during the contest. I started this WES off on 20m
able to work CA from PA but nothing shorter. When 20m died I went to 80m for the rest of
the evening. 20m was strong at 1330Z Sunday morning and then 15m was strong by 1600Z. I
finally had some success on 40m at 2000Z calling CQ and had my first run of 3 QSO's!
Lowest number worked was 3T/N6WK/Gordon and highest 7234/N3GWZ/Pat and W4CUX's 5497T gave
me my T. Thanks to everyone for a great sprint.

Did not use a homebrew/restored key, just my old Bunnell that was given to me by a
friend, classmate and neighbor, Greg King WN6DWA (SK) when I was first setting up my
Novice station in Jan 1971. It looked as old as it does now when I first got it 40yrs
ago, so I do not know its age or type. I think it is a J-38.

This was by far my most productive WES with 56 Qs, previous high was 38. If 20/15/10 had
been any good Sunday I would have had a lot more. 80/40 were the most productive bands
Saturday night. Looking forward to try and top this total, 100 Qs would be fantastic!!!

I bought this bug specifically to restore. It was so bad off that I did not think I could
make it any worse. It was totally striped of paint and plating, parts were polished with
a Drumel tool. I used a nickel plating solution I got on the internet. It was applied
with my lab power supply in current compliance mode. The paint is just glossy spray
paint from Home Depot. I bought a gold pen at a hobby store. Braso on the name plate and
some red finger nail polish for the bug. I made the paddles out of ABS, which makes a
nice non slip surface. Turned the knob on my electric drill. It took about a week. This
bug works just fine and looks nice, but it is a worker bee. I now know if I ding it up I
can fix it, but a few dings will give it some character.

Only have QRP but conditions seemed pretty good. With two hours left I had to choose;
make more contacts, or go for a bike ride in our beautiful 80 degree sunny day. The ride
won and I got back at 23:59. I worked Donna AG6V on three bands, but that feels like
cheating, even QRP. I could probably work her with a dummy load since she ios about a
mile away.

N2AUR Operated by: George, 5841T from NJ

The main components are a Western Union 2-A legless base and a hot contact strip from a J-
38. I just happened to have these in my key junk box. I'm sure others will work as well.
The rest of the components are from my brass hardware box. The wood base is from a local
craft store. The pivot is a 10-32 brass screw mounted in the original hot contact hole in
the base using the original phenolic plus nylon insulators. It was hacksawed down the
middle (after mounting)and a lead soldered to the underside. The ring end of the hot
contact was tinned, put in place and soldered. The "L" shaped end was sandwiched between
2 pieces of wood which are glued in place. Contact spacing is done by putting washers
behind the screw heads. The curvature of the hot contact strip gave me the idea for
the "Camelback" name. Total assembly time was about 2 hours!.

Enjoyable WES. Lots of new members and old alike. Logged enough new Tributes to make it
into x3 status. Last QSO was with our newest member, K4GM, #7241. Welcome aboard George!

I completed restoration on this 1878 camelback KOB last year so I did not take the
bonus. I used it the entire WES. It has a great action despite its age. One of my
faorites. For antique wood on these KOBs.. I recommend "Howards Feed-N-Wax" wood
preservative. Brass was completely dismantled and thoroughly cleaned but left the patina
in place. I cringe whenever I see old brass keys polished to a shine.

Thanks to all who participated.

night 80 meters was good while the rtty contest had 40 meters busy. 20 meters was very
good on Sunday till close to the end. It was fun as usual. Worked the regulars and then
many new call entries in my log. Thanks to all and looking forward to the next event.

I was ready to jump into my first WES some time ago. Had everything all tuned up and
right before WES started I keyed up and the key (a very old key taken off my MFJ practice
occilator) fell into about 10 pieces, bearings fell out and hit the floor. I threw it in
the trash, no spare key. During the next month I picked up some things out of the trash
bin (I do construction work) and made a key. The parts consist of a brick tie, some
screws, a scrap piece of cedar, and the cheapest cabinet knob I could find. Cost: less
than $2.
My good friend Mike, W5MPC, now works at ARRL HQ and uses one of these at W1AW. They do
get around.
I do like my new Flameproof much better but still have some around here.

FT_817 @ 1 watt - 80 meter dipole and 20 meter delta loop...Wow! this was my best WES yet.
Bands were in great shape and 80 proved surprising and extremely productive! Made at least 1
contact on each band 10 thru 80 although skunked on 160. Without a doubt my highlights in
this WES was working both Luis EA3NO and Bert F6HKA with 1 watt - (awesome!!!) I also worked
Bert on 80 but didnt count that Q in my score as I made that one at 5 watts...Met a lot of
new Ops and scored a bunch of new Nr's. A total blast! Thanks and 73 to all, Jim WA2OQJ

Well. I was very glad to participate. It was nice to see other stations not yet with SKCC

Working QRS stations was great, welcome to all the new SKCC folk and to those who have not

of getting in the way. It was great to work some fellas on 10M this month. Found W5ZR all
alone cqing and it was just a matter of time before lots of signals started appearing.
15M was well represented also with 22 Q's there. No homebrew key here, just the NT9K key
which is a joy to use. I wonder if anyone got on 160M? I checked a few times last night

I decided to make a key in under 30 minutes with minimum tools and materials just to see
if I could do it (upper photo). The ends of the wires are duct taped to the back of pennies
used as contacts, and an old yardstick was sacrificed for this project. It worked (I made
all 36 of my QSOs with it), but the key wanted to rock and walk and the tape started to
come away from the wire and pennies after a while, so I quickly improvised a “contact
keeper” (lower photo) that I used when I was not transmitting to keep the wires and
pennies pressed together firmly. I used a small yardstick shim under the front when
operating to eliminate the rock. I’ll go back to using my J-37, but its nice to know I can
make something in a pinch. 73, Charles

W3NP Operated by: Dave, 3182T from WV

This key restoration is still a work in progress. I used it for most of my QSO's. It is
still suffering from a little dit stutter and the dash tension spring screw has issues and
needs more work, but it is coming along nicely and I was getting used to it by the end of
the event. I had to use a little extension on the arm to slow it down enough for the event.
I found conditions this sprint to be much improved from the past several months. 40 meters
was not so hot in the evening (why are there computer RTTY stations using up the bands
what seems like every weekend?), but 80 was fine, 20 was good on Sunday afternoon and I
even made a few Q's on 15 meters including Max KH6ZM in HI. Used my Ten Tec Omni 6 plus at
3 to 5 watts along with my 130' long center fed zepp at 45' and the KLM-34A at 50'. I had
a really good time and worked a lot of interesting stations and some really new and high
numbers.

That was the most fun I've had on the radio in a long time! I fell asleep at the key
Saturday night and got skunked, but up real early Sunday and it paid off with a QSO with
VK4TJ and some others. Sunday afternoon, the higher bands were real good with lots of DX.
The highlight of the sprint was working Max KH6ZM on 15m and getting 599 big sig in Hi
from him, he even repeated big sig on his closing over. That made my huge head even bigger
than it normally is. Max was also 5NN here, so we must have had a pipeline?

While I missed Tom nr 1, I got to work Gordon and he sounded great, his fist even sounded
more chipper, since he got his new lung. It was nice to see all the DX members working the
sprint. Lots of new members too and I got to work a lot of old friends. Sorry I missed
some of you! A special thank you, to Dick K2RFP for keeping the WES growing. It's
incredible how big the WES has grown since I founded it, 4 years ago. The skill level of
our members is simply outstanding, I heard some beautiful fists!

I wasn't able to finish the key that I hoped to use, wasn't even close. So, I had to use
the last homebrew key I built. It has a nice action and I used it most of the time. It has
about 4 carrots of rubies mounted on the brass parts. I call this key the Royal Ruby Pump
or Princess Diana for short. This key was the original prototype for the new SKCC club
key. It's the only one of my homebrew keys that I have kept for myself.

Thank you to all that exchanged SKCC Numbers with me. This WES was a lot of fun.

My Craftsmen Key, SK-101, is made of Solid Black Walnut from lumber that my father
haversted in 1952 from a woods near Oregon, Wisconsin.

The screws are Stainless Steel. The spring is from a ball point pen. The cable was
purhased from Radio Shack. The contacts are made from Brass Sheet metal shim stock.
The tools used to make this key: Radial Arm Saw, Drill Press, Drill Press with Mortise
attachment, Wood Lathe, Routers, Table Saw, Belt Sander, Palm Sander, Screw Thread Tap,
Soldering Iron, several templates and jigs to hold and profile materials during machining.

I used this key throught-out the entire WES and it worked flawlessly. Wish I could say
that much about the operator, Hi Hi.

This key is and will remain a treasure for me.

contacts. I almost had 41. I picked up Max in HI on 10 meters and got all his info, but by
the time I had sent my info, the band was totally quiet, so I didn't log it. QSB wins
again :-). Still an exciting note to end my first QRP WES on.

Fun WES this month, had more time on the air than usual. Congrats to the 100 Watt winners
those quantities of QSOs are amazing. Used a home brew cootie and found out that a
computer card retainer bracket doesn’t make consistent contact. Sorry to all my QSOs for
the scratchy CW. Next I’m going to update it with AC0PR’s contact buttons for next time.
Only worked W9DLN on one band, Dan I must be slipping

Good news and bad news...

The good news is that I was able to work Max (KH6ZM) on 20M during operating on Sunday
evening. I was working another station when I realized he was right next to our freq.
with a booming signal. So when I finished with Cecil (K5YQF) I moved over to Max's freq.
and decided I'd try "for as long as it took" :0), since I only needed HI for skcc WAS. I
was astounded that he answered my second call !! Thanks Max, for participating in this
event.

The bad news is, due to prior commentments I was never able to get back to the SKCC
event. It's a shame when the wife's priorities clash with mine :0) GGGrrrrrr.

Thanks to all for the contacts and I'm looking forward working the upcoming SKS. 73

The St key (in the middle) and the Vibroplex (copy) are both of my homebrewed keys which were used in the WES

K2RFP Operated by: Dick, 2099T from NY

I made four new straight keys for this event, all with the same design and approximate
dimensions, but made from different materials. The keys have an RCA phono jack for quick
and easy connection to the radio, and refrigerator magnet material on the botton to hold
them to a metal plate I strap to my leg.

Although I only used the white one during the sprint they all got some use in QSOs
before the sprint and all feel very nice to me.
73, Dick.

Front to back: Oak, bloodwood, walnut, solid vinyl.

KG4W Operated by: Ed, 2416T from VA

Sri, no homebrew or restored key. Could have used my "beer can" key, where u tap a beer
can with a bolt that u hold in ur hand. Used 200 watts, started mid day Sunday on 15 then
20, tried 40 but too much rtty. Wound up on 80 meters.

VE3FUJ Operated by: Brion, 4936T from ON

VE3FUJ I had a very small HB key that I made earlier this year, you know i forgot where i
put it and consequently didn't use it. Come to think of it, it must have been smaller than
I thought. Where were everybody? glued to the boob-tube for the ball game? I had one
contact that would rather be chatting with me than watching the ballgame, I agreed. The
bands seemed in rather poor shape as far as number of stns on. I checked 80 thru 10 Sunday
after lunch and finally found some on 40 near the end of the afternoon. Brion

My partner at work found a J-38 at a fea market for 5 dollars and gave it to me, all the
adjustment screws were lock-up and contacts were in bad shape, currently in process of
polishing up, but just played with it this go around. no pics as yet. Larry

K4OSO Operated by: Milt, 180T from VA

It was very nice working South Africa, ZS6JBJ, on 20 at midday. Also worked Australia,
VK4TJ, and Netherlands. I used the Pro Pump for 95 percent of my contacts. Only late in
the contest did I resort to my QRS bug.

EA1EVA Operated by: Javi, 5871T from Spain

The first night(in Spain) very bad harvest.- six hours = six Qso´s, but a finally a funy
WES, my best on 15m. band. I used my homebrew key in the entire WES and it has a great
and a silent action. It was very happy to work VK4TJ (nice surprise) TNX John 4474T. I
can not to hear the special station IK2SON. Vy 73 to all, and until next time. Javi 5871T

VE3GTC Operated by: Graham, 6829 from ON

Key is shown post restoration. In reality all it needed was very good cleaning to remove
the old dirt and grime and a wee bit of corrosion from having sat around in someone's loft
for so many years. Works well with a nice but is a wee bit too stiff for everyday use.

The weekend weather was just too nice for a mid November to spend it inside playing radio.
So, I only managed to spend enough time working the sprint to say I had done so making a
grand total of 5 contacts but in any case was fun non the less. Had I planned my weekend
better I would have packed up a portable radio, antenna and key and worked sprint QRP
portable. Conditions where such that it would have made for a very enjoyable day in the
field. Maybe next time.

cheers, Graham ve3gtc

AE7EG Operated by: Rob, 7184 from WA

This is the only straight key I have. It's a piece of scrap aluminium, a large paper clip,
and an audio patch cable (2 jack plugs on one end and a TRS jack plug at the other).

Things don't get much more basic than this!

WBØQQT Operated by: Steve, 183T from NE

Although I do not have a picture of my homebrew key I made it at a friends machine shop
from aluminum bar stock and mounted it on a wood base. It's really not much to look at
and I don't care much for the feel of it either but after some fiddling with the spring
tension and contact spacing I'll go as far as to say it is adequate. It is somewhat
patterned after a Marconi straight key and has a big round wooden ball for a knob and a
poker chip skirt.

Another Portable WES in the log. This time I operated from Eno State Park in Durham, NC.
I used my HB-1a and my FT-817 into PAR EndFedz 20 and 40. Also my QRP doublet at 33 feet
running 3-5 watts. Bands were great and I had a blast. Strongest signal was Randy, K2VT at
30 over. Very close second was Vern, W9HLY at 20 over. All signals seemed to be up more
than usual.
I spent a fair amount of time explaining to non members what WES was. I'll look for some
new members to come up on roster soon. I heard Max several times on two bands but he had
such a pile up I didn't even bother. The local leaves were in some very fall colors and
weather was perfect for fall cook outs and playing radio. It was great to hear Bill, NT9K
on since I've missed him of recent. Thanks to all in the log and I will see you all again
in the upcoming WES. Now, let's get ready for K3Y!!!

73 for now,

It was nice to be active in this pleasant envent for the 11th time.
I worked 16 DXCC countries, one VE province and 14 US states.
6 new SKCC members and 2 new SKCC countries for ma future awards endorsements were in the
log.
9 non members called me and one of them (SP2DX) called me because he heard my "CQ WES"
and his name is...."WES" !
Bert F6HKA was contacted on 6 bands from 80 m to 6 m.
I really hope to be active next month for the last event of the year.
After that, I will wait for the K3Y activities.
Awaiting for, I hope to do many other regular contacts when at the radio shack
(generally around 22:00 to 24:00 UTC)

Off topic soapbox. Hmm, is that possible?!

Great to be on HF again from home. Now to get my current 75 foot off center fed, flat-top

firma qualifies, eh? H I CU as time permits. 73 de AA9KH

K8NB Operated by: Noel, 3112T from MI

Had a bit more time to play this month. One of these days I will have the whole 24
hours. This month used the Icom 735 and for keys either used my 1956 Champion bug or an
old Nye straight key. Great fun as always.

K9FO Operated by: Will, 5811 from IL

I got this key at a hamfest about 1980. I was teaching a radio class and I loaned it to a
novice to practice with and never got it back. A couple of months ago I ran into him and
asked if he still had it. He thought it may be in his mother,s atic and would take a look.
A week later he returned it to me after 27 YEARS! Never give up is the moral. It was grime
covered and I gave it a good cleaning and lube. It has a great feel and is a favorite key
of many hams.

Rig for WES: Icom IC 703 @ 5 Watts, 20 meter rotating dipole @ 35 feet. Only operated 4
hours and 20 was open so just stayed there. Thanks for all the contacts.

As usual I had a blast even though I had some power line QRM. I wish the electric
company would fix that bloody transformer already. Thanks to all who came back to my CQ.
Just think of the fun you have during SKS and WES, it will be tripled during K3Y in
January. I will be operating next month's events with my TS-2000 @ 100W to get ready for
K3Y so some of you may hear a new (to your log) SKCC station. CU on the radio. 73

KB1USE Operated by: Geoffrey, 7038 from MA

This was my first WES and I had a blast! Age: 12

W7JZE Operated by: Bill, 6053 from CA

Well, dipoles DO work! :-) I had just finished upgrading my long-wire ANT by erecting
a temporary dipole to try out. Then, when tuning up I HEARD WES GOING ON. Cool! I quick
scanned this month's rules, dug out the one key that I had done some surgery on
(restored?), and dove in. What fun!

This is only my second contest ever (first was WES in Aug). I made 16 contacts just
messing around, having fun, and I discovered that the temporary dipole was being heard
much better than my 150' stealth long wire strung along my backyard fence! BONUS: The
temporary dipole loaded on 15M nicely and I made my first contacts ever on 15M, so that
was exciting too!

One day, I'll actually PLAN for WES, in advance :-) I am looking forward to doing so
for next month’s December's WES!

I only had a brief bit of free time during the WES but had fun anyway. It was nice to see
the activity on 15 M.

W4HDM Operated by: Damon, 3729T from GA

This is my favorite Sprint ...unfortunately I did not have time to make a key this time
around and was very busy around the house. I am glad I at least got to post a score!

Sprint keys from the past.

W3RT Operated by: Red, 3237T from PA

Didn't use a homebrew key; used the Flalmeproof and the Annie for most of the contacts
that I was able to make. Happy to hear so many new numbers out there- and always a joy
to have someone come back with your name before you send it! Great Club. Great
Operators. Not enuff time to spend on the key- always something else going on that takes
you away from the key....
Used the '940 into either the beam or the sloper.

Had fun, and looking for the next events.
