The window took down my 20 mtr extended double zepp Friday and I put up a new antenna
yesterday so it worked out great for me, this is the first time I have used it. It is a
80 meter center fed zepp with 67 ft horizontal and 67 ft vertical up my ole sycamore
tree. It works like a charm. I kept listening back on my 20 meter rhombic and the new
horizontal/vertical cf zepp beat it every time on listening.

Cold day here in Missouri, to cold to do anything outside and a perfect day for the
weekend sprint.

N6CMF Operated by: Phil, 2740T from CA

Had lotsa fun with 40 vertical wire strung ulp fiberglass pole and using two 120' wires
and chain link fence as counterpoise. Great fun but conditions have been better.

K4JPN Operated by: Steve, 2402C from GA

40M seemed to be the good nite time band in GA, only worked one station on 80M. The
daytime band here was 20M. 73, Steve K4JPN

VK4TJ Operated by: John, 4474T from Australia

I was aiming for a perfect goose-egg score. 6 hours into the WES, Reg, KA0RJY spoiled
all that with a very late CQ on 20 mtrs. Surprise! 20 decided to "open all hours", and a
string of night owl US ops went into the log. Later, much the same cast was worked on
40 mtrs.

It was good to see high levels of European support for the WES.

KA5TJS Operated by: Allen, 5172C from TX

Great WES as usual. 40mtrs was not to hot but 20mtrs was good. Got everything on Sunday.
Did get to work LW3EX and VE3CWU on 15 mtrs. Three bands in one day.
ICOM 746 Pro/40 watts and G5RV at 30 ft. See you next time.

Real rough one! AGC is out on the 746, and operating a CW contest without it is not fun
hi! Hope everyone had a good time!

WA6L Operated by: John, 4210C from CA

I was only able to work the WES for two hours, but they were good hours. There were plenty
of signals and many good fists. The only negative is that I did not collect enough 'C' and
'T' stations to get my Tribune. I am now officially at 49. I guess I will have to work
the next sprint to get that last one. 73 . . . John, WA6L

W4HDM Operated by: Damon, 3729T from GA

I worked this Sprint on and off. I started the Sprint using my home brew 20 meter vertical
and my FT 897D. Band conditions just were not in my favor Saturday night! When I did find
QSO’s I was having trouble with the lack of filtering in my 897D so Sunday I switched back
to my TS-2000. The antenna received very well, but I could not always reach those I was
hearing. I did manage LW3EX – Walt on 10 meters and Bert - F6HKA on 20. The antenna was
constructed of a bottom PVC section with a heavy solid copper wire in it soldered to a
connector to allow me to screw in a 102 inch steel whip, making it about 16 foot 6 inches
over all. 4 Radials a quarter wave long each completed it. A little green paint to help
conceal it and I was off and running. It had a very quiet receive. I had fun as usual.

Conditions were not in the best shape, but we had fun!
Thanks everyone for all the Q's

SRI, but didn't have time for the "New Ant Theme"...
WX wasn't vy nice here lately, we had a severe hail storm some weeks ago
(Could say a Meteor Shower?) with ice rocks bigger than tennis balls!!!
Feeling lucky, only lost two ants, many roof tiles and other stuff.

I used my "new" Lionel J-38 key for the first time during this WES. I had a lot of fun
between midnight and 2 AM local time. 80m was a little bit noisy but the CW cut through
most of it. I made 6 QSOs (the most ever for me as a relatively new CW op). Thanks for
slowing down for guys like me. 73 de Andy KB1OIQ

VE3AKV Operated by: Bob, 5204T from ON

Hello to all...

Special antenna was a 40m dipole running NVIS.

Thanks to all those that managed to pull out my QRP signal...bands were a little weird
today, but for the two hours that I played radio, I managed 16 QSO's.

See you all again next month!

usual. Hope to see some of you at Dayton next weekend. 73, Art

I managed to squeeze 197 minutes out of this weekend for the WES. Nice that I managed to
work Bernard for the extra bonus !
Cold and rainy WX prevented me from even stringing another dipole up in the trees here.

W9LW Operated by: Jay, 6222 from IN

Got my 100th SKCC number during this WES! If/when AC2C confirms my report, I'll be a new
centurion!

N2UM Operated by: Gary, 3041T from NY

I put up (about 30 feet) an OCF 20/40 antenna that I've been carrying around with every
move for years. It loaded good on 20 but I had to use the tuner on 40. This was the
first time I've used my Drake 2C, 2-NT and Hallicrafters HA-5 VFO for a Sprint. It was
fun. I look forward to next month's Boatanchor theme!

N1LU Operated by: Don, 2252T from NH

I don't get a chance to do the WES to often, so this was a treat for me even if I could
only do a couple of hours. 20M was good here, so that's where I stayed.

KW4JS Operated by: John, 4800 from TN

New antenna was a 40 meter horizontal loop. It worked great. I think I will keep it.
Thanks to all those who I worked on 20 and 40 meters periodically through Sunday.

W5ZR Operated by: Bert, 2931T from LA

Tnx for the qsos. I was only able to squeeze 3 one-half hour sessions during this
weekend; so a one and a half hour effort. Lots of new numbers, this club is still
growing well. Stayed on 20M and conditions were good. 73 Bert

Outbacker. No oil on the coast where we are yet...73, Ci

N9QU Operated by: Leo, 3464T from WI

Lots of signals. Some big some not so big. Conditions better than recent past. Lots of
fun even though my special antenna died on the first attempt to use it. Worked fine with
low power when tuning but hated those 100 watts. Thanks to all. 73

KBØETU Operated by: Phill, 4542 from AL

Think the bands died about 1415Z...or maybe Mother's Day had something to do with it.
Would have made more contacts but a lot of fellows don't seem to listen for us QRPers.
Then again, that just adds that much more challenge to it. Still, it was fun and hope to
hear you guys on the air again next month. 73, Phill

N5LUL Operated by: Brad, 3779C from TX

I've been absent from the events for a while. Glad to be able to join this months sprint.
I missed the bonus points... too windy to put up any new, or old antennas. The contacts I
made provided a good excuse to stay indoors and keep operating. Hope to hear everyone
next time!

K4UFT Operated by: Ted, 4289C from SC

20M in pretty good shape. Went to 40M the last 30 minutes. Heard one weak station on
15M. Summer E-skip season should give a boost to 10M. Anybody ever work 6M?

Usual set-up: FT-950 @50 Watts to home-brew vertical. Navy Flameproof and J-37 keys.

Threw up an OCF dipole at the last second, the new vertical just didn't have any ears and
just did not want to torment anyone more than I already do at qrp levels. Over all I just
have to say it is encouraging with how many new high number numbers are in the hunt, says
allot about cw and straight/bugs. Enjoying it more every day. One word to all the new
ones, get your C and T so we have some excitement here. Thank you to everybody, Randy
doing portable was an exciting opportunity and sure hope he shares his trek with us.
Now I am going to sleep this off. Thanks again. Werner

Best WES ever! Thanks everyone. Worked many of you on several different bands. Thanks
also to all the T's and C's that worked me during the last hour. Got a lot of the hard
mults like WI and IA out of the way early but some of the easy ones never came on.
Missed CO and ME. Usually always get them. Lots of EU DX also helped bring up the mults
during the afternoon. Also worked a more than usual amount of non-members this time.
Some of them helped me out with much needed states and countries. I guess life is good.

Thank you everyone once again. Special thanks to K2RFP for making the cat and bird dance
a couple of extra times and also to K3UK who's Sked Page ROCKS! I couldn't get the
scores I do without you guys!

Take care everyone and hope to see you next month...

Actually FORCED to use a new antenna - Lost my ole trustly vertical Saturday afternoon to
high winds - along with a few trees...

K3NCO Operated by: Marc, 6144T from MD

Well, nothhing like WES on Mother's Day - only got in about 2 hours worth, but managed 31
QSOs on 20 and 40. Looks like it would have been an interesting event for the weekend. No
time for new antenna either, but here's a photo of some of the existing ones, mostly
centered on the 55 ft. crankup. The end of the 40 meter dipole can be seen in the lower
right foreground, and below that, the end of the 80/160 meter inverted vee coming off its
40 ft. vertical tubing.

KAØRJY Operated by: Reg, 4100T from MN

Another great WES. I actually built 2 WES antenna's One a dipole the other a verticle
both for 20 meters. To top it off I worked VK4TJ using my WES dipole and F6HKA using the
WES 20 meter verticle. The 20 meter dipole actually worked better last night than the
Hustler verticle so I used it for all 7 of the 20 meter contacts last night.

Nothing fancy about the dipole just cut the wires to 16 feet 8 inched used some
insulaters on the ends hoisted it up by the cener on the 23 foot flag pole and tied it
off as a slight inverted vee. I use a 1:1 balun to connect the antenna to the coaxial
cable.

The verticle was about the same lenght with a 13 turn coil at the bottom wrapped on 1
1/4" pvc pipe, with 4 radials. I took pictures but they really don't show much detail so
i have not included them.

Thanks to all for organizing this WES and to all that participated.

Great WES. Plenty of participation and decent band conditions.

VA5LF Operated by: Sean, 4507C from SK

I literally had about 10 minutes to play in this sprint, between everything else going on.
I did manage to add 3 more to my count for my T. Wish I had had more time though, as I
only need 2 more numbers. Hopefully I'll get my T before the SKS.

WA5VQM Operated by: Mark, 58C from TX

Didn't have time to put up a new antenna but still had fun. Had a cool QSO with WD0HCO
who's having a "Novice Year" running only 60's novice rigs crystal control this year.
Inspired me to get most of my boatanchors on the air for a few contacts each. Bands spotty
but made contacts on 80, 40, 20, and 15. Gary K9ZMD/6 says he's in CA but I think he's
really next door based on signal strength- loudest signal of the sprint here, and that was
on a 50 year old receiver. I'll have to double-check but I think I made "T" on this one.
73 to all!

WA1VIL Operated by: Greg, 443T from MA

Not bad for Mother's Day-had to keep sneaking down to the shack between the "necessaries"
to pay proper attention to the XYL. Conditions not to good at this QTH. Thanks to KG4W
and VE3AKV for pulling out my signal with the "special" antenna. I used a slinky dipole
in the attic for those contacts-just a couple of Toys'r'us slinkies suspended from some
clothesline in the attic. Resonant somewhere near 7 MHz and 21 MHz and the tuner in the
TS480 cleaned things up-but no contacts on 15 meters. It actually loaded on everything
between 40 and 10. Guess I will leave it there for a back-up antenna. Somehow I managed
not to work Pete in Norfolk MA only about 10 miles away-next time! Thanks for all the
contacts-great to be back in the game after missing the last two WES. Thanks for all the
QSOs and cu next time!

WA2OQJ Operated by: Jim, 5941 from NY

Wow! What a great WES! I drastically improved my totals from my first WES...

Threw together a very quick 20 meter vertical..20 wasn't happening for me at the start but
wanted to use the antenna, so what the heck, went to 40 loaded it up thru the tuner and
worked Dan W9DLN with 2.5 watts and then Dave W3NP...wish 30 was a usable band, The
vertical worked superbly there! The highlight for me was working F6HKA Bert on 20 meters
using the vertical Sunday afternoon!

I want to thank everyone I worked, mostly its your ears, patience and willingness to hang
in there and make it work that makes my goals attainable...its very much appreciated! I
worked many a new number, so many, that it has put me over the magic 100 mark and earned
me my "C" and as of right now I havent done the math yet but may have earned me enough
needed points to earn my 1 X QRP award! If not I will be very, very close to it...

Had a great time and look forward to next Month!

Some old conduit, wire. piece of PVC and a couple of tie wraps...add 5 watts...and you too can talk to Bert F6HKA!

Inadvertently played "not my usual antenna" with an old antenna. My antenna switch
(MFJ-949E, bypass side) was still stuck on an indoor 40M Pro-Am mobile stick from a
previous A/B comparison with my outdoor 40M OCF dipole. Made first 9 contacts on the B
antenna, but heard Bernard F5DE and Bert F6HKA and Mexican special event station 4B2HQI.
Band conditions improved remarkably when I switched to the A antenna! Tnx to Chas K8IJ,
Bob AA2SM, and Tom K4ZGB for new states of KY, NM, and AL. 73.

WF7T Operated by: Brad, 4682 from TN

Decided to finally put my SKCC number to use. I was in the process of pulling down all of
my wires(except for my trusty low G5RV @ 25', ends at 10') this week-end. I was using the
WES to test my work. My last 17 Contacts the last hour on Sunday were made with a new 44'
doublet at 35' oriented toward EU (Kinda sorta...I hope).

My key was a "half-cootie". I have a Winkeyer USB normally run in Iambic B mode but
instead running in Bug emulation. I smacked the Dah paddle of my old Bencher BY-1 to make
dits and dahs, poorly I might add. I thank all for putting up with my jittery mess of a
fist.

I have a J-38 in pieces on my bench to be restored and put back into service. I had so
much fun over six hours stolen from this weekend that I might just need to move resto
project up in priority. I am using another J38 under my desk as a PTT Foot-switch (looks
down in shame). I suppose I could have used that one but QLF would have been even worse
than it was.

Glad to see the QRP stations, great work all!

Thank you all for the nice QSOs, and thanks to the organizers of the WES.

I used two made for event antennas. I took an old Swedish military antenna:
(http://gronradio.sm7dlf.se/hogant1.htm) and converted it over to a halfwave endfed (base)
vertical with a top capacitance hat. The aluminum mast just happened to be 33 feet, (10
meters) which is of course a half wave on 40. It seemed to transmit fine but the receive
was not up to my expectations. So, I attached a pulley to the top hat ring and hoisted a
revived 88 foot 26 gauge wire doublet I built just in case! hi hi It was fed with 44
feet of 300 ohm window line. The 33' center made a perfectly angled inverted "V". Its
performance was outstanding!! It will now be a permanent part of my portable operations
where an all day outing will allow raising the mast!! Rig was my FT-817 at 1 watt and 500
mW output. I was using a 30 watt (2.5 amp)solar panel for power and to charge the 7.5 aH
cell for the night. The whole operation was picnic table portable in the backyard. Perfect
wx. Cool nights (52°) and strong winds to keep bugs (no pun) at bay! Bands were alive the
whole time. I didn't get to use the K3UK sked page http://www.obriensweb.com/sked/ this
time but a huge thanks to Andy, K3UK for all you do om. It is well worth a donation.
Strongest signal was Marc, K3NCO from MD at full scale, KE4KY and AE4LD were next at 50 over.
Bernard, F5DE did an outstanding job as featured operator. Well done!! Thanks Everybody
and I hope to see you in the SKS. Last contact was Brad, W7FT....Where were you Werner?? LOL

Between church and Mother's Day activities I didn't get much on the air time. I put up a
wire "T" antenna on Friday and used it on 20 & 40 meters with a tuner to make all of my
WES contacts. Was pleased wit it's performance.

During my short operating periods it sounded like there was a great turnout for this
WES. There was actually so many stations around the SKCC watering hole on 20 meters late
Sunday afternoon that it was hard to find a spot to call CQ.

I only had 48 QSO's but it was interesting to note that over 50ere either T's or C's.
I worked 22 unique T's and 7 unique C's.

As always enjoyed the event.

I had less than one hour of free time this weekend for the sprint. I am in enough hot water with the XYL, couldn't
spend mother's day in the shack!

AF2Z Operated by: Drew, 2082T from NJ

Worked a couple of hours Sat night, mostly 20m. CA was well-represented with signals from
four stations making the bounce across the Rockies to end up here in SNJ. Also a bunch of
stations from MO and MI. Grabbed a few more QSOs Sunday morning on 20 and 40. Only got two
contacts on 80m; not sure why. 80 sounded good here, but no SKCC. My rig: Elecraft K3 @ 12
watts; 100' wire up 30'; Junker straight key.

WS9E Operated by: Joe, 3859 from WI

We got back from a two week vacation in St Louis to find snow on the ground, in
Wisconsin, and the Weekend Sprint half over. I got on 20 meters long enough to make six
contacts. I heard quite a bit of activity on 20. I briefly checked 15 and 40, but
nothing was going on.

Was up at our ski house at Loon Mt. Threw up a Par endfed antenna over the deck and got
on the air. Seems to work fine this way. only had a bit of time to work the WES this
weekend, but DID get on the air. Heard quite a few stations while working around the
house.

F5DE Operated by: Bernard, 6247C from France

There were a long time that I did not stay in front of the station for about 20 hours (1
hour lunch, 3 hours relax). But the pleasure was so great !
Thanks a lot to K2RFP and the group for having given me the chance to be the "Bonus of
the month", hi ! Many thanks also to all of you, SKCC members who called me for a
friendly QSO. I do not forget the K3UK page who nicely helped to arrange some contacts.
Using my 50 watts, a GP antenna and three selected keys, I made 65 QSO with 49 SKCC
memebers (including 5 "C" and 29 "T"). 22 US states, 2 VE provinces and 7 DXCC countries
were on the log.
In spite of my "hundreds of calls", the day times were not full of contacts and the main
part of the traffic occured during (french) night hours, of course.
In addition to all that pleasant time, this event was the day for my 50th contact with
a "C" or "T" member, allowing me to upgrade to "T" level. Thanks to AC2C, the new number
was very fast delivered !
One more time, thank you everybody and hope to meet you soon !

With just an hour to spare before the WES, my son & I finished adding another 10 foot
section to each of the doublet supports. There was noticeable improvement in 20 meter
performance. On the downside, even a bit of window line pruning hasn't got it playing on
80 meters yet. I am beginning to suspect my remote tuner's limited range is at fault.
(Safety Report: No injury to the house or the crew, but we are now both convinced that 30
feet is pushing the limit for masts made of swaged top rail.)

This really was a great WES! Good participation and some bands that really rocked.
There's just one thing that could have made it better . . . having that new SKCC
Pro Pump on my radio desk instead of still in USPS custody. : (
It finally arrived early Monday morning. Beautiful. I could only sit & gaze at it for
the longest time.

As always, it was really a pleasure to work new members. I noticed that some who were
jittery and hesitant during the first hours had grown remarkably steady before the
sprintathon ended. This time, about 10 percent of my contacts had numbers well above 6000;
I wonder if it might be fun to occasionally base a special bonus on that sort of ratio.

Worked these known-QRP stations: W9HLY (2 bands!), N8BB, KW4JS, N9GGE, K8NB, and W1PNS.
Due to QSB, I needed mucho re-Petes for that last one. : ) Thanks for all the fun; I'm
already looking forward to the next event. 73

Not much time to enjoy the fine band conditions this time. Happy to work the stations
that I did, and also good to work those that I haven't worked in a while.
Station set-up: Kenwood TS 940 S at 85 watts to a sloper on 40m, and to a Force 12 C3SS
for 20 meters.

Hope to ba ble to spend more time at the key soon. Hello to all, and 73. Red.

WA1AR Operated by: Alan, 4079T from MA

Because of Mothers day I knew my time would be limited. But then instead of a new
antenna I had a broken one. After a few hours Sunday morning I noticed SWR setting were
way off and it had 10 ohms DC resistance. After a lot of checking and measuring I
determined it was the last PL259 in the chain on the G5RV. Out comes the ladder and up I
go. This is the second time I have found bad connectors like this. The PL259s with the
brown phenolic type material degrades over time and becomes a resistor after they heat up
and then it thermally runs away fast. I will start replacing all of these with the nylon
or teflon insilators. After fixing this, the computer crashed and I lost a few QSOs,
good thing I have some paper notes. About noon guest showed up and I was out of time and
never got back to the sprint. Oh well there is always next month.

Band conditions not real good but I had lots of fun anyhow. Used the "not my usual ant."
for all 40 mtr contacts on Saturday CDT. The inverted vee was made from wire I took from
the windings of an old motor and the center insulator was a bottle cap. The end supports
were tent stakes with plastic heads. I fed it with RG-58 coax. Thanks to everyone. I'm
looking forward to future sprints..73..Bill N0UMP dit dit

W3NP Operated by: Dave, 3182T from WV

80 meters was noisy in WV but I did make a few coast to coast qso's on that band. 40 was
the best but not as good as usual (qrn), and 20 was down in signal strength. I gave and
received a lot more S5 and lower reports than I normally do. Interestingly enough, a lot
of the QRP stations were quite strong - KB4QQJ and N8BB to name a few. I alternated
between my Vibroplex Original and a Nye Master Key. No new antennas at my QTH.

WAØBGV Operated by: Slim, 5465T from MO

My new Antenna was 20 meter Dipole fabricated with AC extension cord (abt $3.00) PVC
pipe for center and end connectors (abt $0.10), 100 ft pollyprop rope from Dollar Store
($2.00), a 35 ft length of used RG8X. Left the vinyl covering on wire which shortened the
ant a little 450/f mhz instead of conventional 468/f mhz.
Strung it up about 25 foot into a large Maple tree in among the branches and leaves
without regard to contact with the tree. The antenna was cut for 14.050 and showed no
movement at all on the swr meter for that frequency. About 42 percent of my contacts were
made on the antenna. Better reception than my G5RV. I like it!
A fine WES in western Missouri. Tnx to all. de Slim

S7 noise level on all band. Worked with the attenuator on and couldn't hear much and was
giving out 53 reports. Gave up after a bit.

The antenna is a 75 foot inverted-L with a tuner at the base, the feedpoint is at 5 feet
and it's 15 feet vertical and 60 horizontal (starts at 20 feet high and ends at around 10
feet in the back). I can't claim it for the bonus points it's been up since the weekend
before the WES, it's a work in progress ... the radiating element is wal-mart cheapy 24
ga speaker wire.

I have enough for my "C" so next WES i'll be handing a bonus point to people.

to those who dug me out of the noise and to Randy QQJ for the QSO with his 500mw. Maybe
I’ll try outside on Sunday next WES with a different antenna. Lots of fun

Only made 3 QSO's so didn't spend much time in this month's WES. XYL had alternate
honey-do plans most all weekend. Still learning to work my newly acquired HF rig, a Yaesu
FT-1000MP Mark V. Already I like it on CW much better than my Kenwood TS-570D which I've
already sold to recoup some of the cost of the FT-1000MPV. The keyer works much better
than the TS-570D's keyer also which used to throw in an extra dit on it's own
occasionally. Hopefully I'll have all the honey-do jobs done by the next WES and can snag
a few more QSO's. One other note, I ordered a new SKCC hat from Astrid Embroidery that
should arrive by tomorrow. Had KU4GW Cliff put on the back so look for me at the Hamfests
excluing Dayton. Wish I could go to Dayton! Maybe some year! Dayton to a ham is kind of
like Mecca to a Muslim hi hi! Until next month, Very 73 and keep pounding that brass!

I made a 51 ft end fed wire with a 15 ft counterpoise as a possible antenna to pack with
my KX-1. High winds here took it out Saturday evening before I got to use it so I used my
loop. On Sunday I draped it over a few low branches on a tree to make a few QSOs.
Surprisingly I was able to QSO with F6HKA with it on 3 watts.

In the photo on the right of my KX-1 station box you can see the new 8 inch spool I made
for the antenna. Why such a big box for a small radio? It is big enough to serve as a desk
when no picnic tables are availabe in the field, yet small enough to fit in my backpack.

Test antenna at the top and my QRP station box.
