Excellent condx for contest. I have an intermitant on 15 tried several times with N6DIT
but couldn't complete exchange, sometimes its o.k. and other times not. Looking forward
to the next sprint.

Well, I did not CQ one time..just S&P...worked all my contacts on 40 except 1! It was on
80! Just played around, nothing serious here! Getting ready for fishing!

K1NIT Operated by: Bill, 3446C from ME

My first sprint. Wicked good fun!

KD6HTN Operated by: Kate, 5405 from CA

Worked mostly on 20 m, but ... hmmm, solar flux = 92 ... maybe there are some people on 15
m & 10 m! I found a few hardy souls, but not very many. However, I got a 5NN from
Alabama! It's nice to have the ionosphere coming back. No junk box key because I have
not accumulated a junk box yet. Using the same old Bencher straight key until I get my
SKCC key.

WB8ENE Operated by: Art, 3773C from OH

Great WES. I really enjoyed it. I was able to get 15 new C's and T's for my T. I've
been a C for two weeks, and only need 9 more for the T. Looking forward to the weekday
sprint next week. I'm hoping to get my T before the end of the month. Thanks for the
contacts. 73, Art.

WB8SDA Operated by: Carmen, 2339 from OH

Was only able to work one hour, but got home from work and took advantage of it using QRP.
Still had fun.

KI4UZI Operated by: Richard, 5679 from FL

First time on the SKCC and had fun and learned a lot. ;-) Will be back next month.

AB1BW Operated by: George, 2468T from CT

This turned out to be my best sprint so far. I finally broke the 1000 point barrier.
Not bad for strictly S&P. I'd do better if I could run a frequency and type at the same
time! A good turn out and pretty good conditions for this one. See you next month.
73, George

AB8FJ Operated by: Ted, 62C from OH

Very enjoyable Sprint. 40 meters was in great condition Sunday afternoon. Thanks to all
the stations who answered my QRP CQ calls on 7.110. Rig used was my Argonaut V at 5 watts
to an end-fed random wire up 15 feet. Key used was my Bencher RJ-2.

VE3AKV Operated by: Bob, 5204T from ON

Hello to all...another fun WES for me. I only had time to work for the first 90 minutes
and the last 60 minutes, but it was still a hoot! I'll just bet that Werner kicked my butt
once again!

72 to all and we'll see you in the SKS.

Bob

KB1OIQ Operated by: Andy, 6265 from MA

This was my first WES event. My schedule only allowed me to spend an hour at the radio.
There was a lot of QRM for many stations, making copy more difficult, especially for a new
guy. I still need to figure out how to jump in when there is a pileup. I had fun despite
my low number of contacts. I'm looking forward to the next WES event.

KBØETU Operated by: Phil, 4542 from AL

Did a lot better this month. Last month, my first, only made 2 contacts and I was
thinking QRP was not the way to go. This month, it looks like there is still hope. It
does add more of a challenge. Lots of fun, let's do it again next month. 73, Phill

VA5LF Operated by: Sean, 4507 from SK

Spent most of the weekend working on my new K2. Got the radio all finished up and ready to
go just in time to get in on the last hour of the WES. Had a great time with only 5W. I
only wish I had the radio done sooner! Until next month, 73!

VA5LF's new baby

W9DLN Operated by: Dan, 3635T from WI

Best WES ever, again! Even took the last 1 1/2 hours off to work outside. Lots of mults
out there. Worked all states except ND, IA, DE and HI. Plenty of DX too with DL, EA, F,
G, OH, OK, VE2, VE3, VE5 and VE7. Many good signals and even the QRPs were strong like
AC2C, K2RFP and WA2JSG.

Once the WI QSO Party started I couldn't figure why so many non-SKCC wanted me but would
not tell me their name. Then I realized they thought I was in DANe County Wisconsin and
what did the 3635 mean??? Then I headed for the safe haven of the old novice band.
Smooth sailing after that.

Antenna problem from last month has been corrected and the station played wonderfully.
Thanks again to K2RFP for the logging program and K3UK for the Sked Page. (even if it
did want to keep me invisible) Couldn't have done it without you guys. Thanks also
especially to all the great hams I met and talked to this weekend. See you next month!

NE7D Operated by: Rock, 665T from OR

Only had a few minutes off and on during the WES, but was able to work the final hour.
Great fun as usual reconnecting with SKCCers and meeting some new ones. Was glad to
throw out the OR mult for the few of you I was able to work in my limited time. Tnx for
the contacts...... 73, Rock Salem, OR

new calls in the WES this time. Hope to see everyone next time, too.

Very enjoyable sprint. Used an Icom IC703 set for a max of 5 watts, using a 12v battery
pack. Elevated Butternut vertical. Key was home-made from a block of wood, with a wooden
knob and paper clip, made for me by a friend K1TSW (869), sometimes called a "Cheese
Block" by Karen, W4KRN. hi hi Look forward to the next one.

Fun, fun and fun. Hoping to get 50 out of this peanut whistle station. Got 61. Maybe I can
get 75 next month. HI HI. Need more chair time. 15 and 10 were a disappointment for a 92
solar flux. Thanks to all contacts. Thank you, very much SKCC.

W4HDM Operated by: Damon, 3729T from GA

The JB Sprint is one of my favorites! Worked lots of great Ops! The key worked great.
Build consisted of a heavy metal spacer for the main body. The spacer sits over a dime for
the contact. The Knob is connected to a nail that has been cut to length and runs into two
magnets with opposing forces for the spring action. I inserted a piece of plastic about
midway into the spacer with a hole in the center to keep the nail straight. I glued 4
plastic tabs around the magnets to keep them in place. The nail has a wire soldered to it
for the other contact. I ran the wires out the bottom of the base and connected them to a
spare plug I had ...glued that to the base. Base is a reject base from another key project
made from a cedar tree my father cut down in VA. If you would like to see the build look
me up on Facebook and check out my photo page.

KL8DX Operated by: Phil, 3800T from AK

I was not able to operate very long due to other obligations. Bands were horrible here
and they actually have been lately. Gave out very few 599 reports in this WES because of
the band condition on 20 meters.

Days are getting longer and temperatures are getting warmer so my activities will move
from indoors to outdoors.

Thanks for the contacts and now that things have slowed down, it's time to change the rest
of my clocks.

Where DX hangs out of course!

W4KRN Operated by: Karen, 4495T from VA

Much better band conditions for this one, especially Saturday night. Didn't make a junkbox
key, instead used the primo Begali Spark -- its just so comfortable to use. Was nice to work
some DX, W4HDM's push button key and WA2JSG Curt's cheese block (key)...hi Thanks to all I
worked, looking forward to the next sprint.

K1ULF Operated by: Ulf, 3689C from CT

I just got a new Softrock built just in time for the WES. This one is a multi bander where
there is a filter and PA module for each band that you can see plugged in to the top. I only
have the 40/80m finished but I got the kits for all bands. The base kit is only $58 and then
you need to add $15 for each band module. Best bargain in teh HAM world.
The Altoids tin is a L-C tuner (similar to the NorCal Altoids tuner). I never got time to
piece a key together. I was happy enough to get the radio running first time it was powered
up. All QSO'n was done barefoot at 0.8-1W.

Solder iron still on. I finished the latest Softrock right when the WES started.

NT7S Operated by: Jason, 361C from OR

This was a fun and frustrating WES at the same time. The junkbox key was a bit difficult
to handle, so my keying was not as great as it should have been. I also used a homebrew
direct conversion QRP rig for all of my 20 meter QSOs, but found that I was having a very
difficult time getting contacts. Towards the end of the sprint, I discovered that my
transmit offset was set to -1.6 kHz, not the -600 Hz it should have been. Most of my
transmissions to other stations were probably out of their filter passband. Once I
corrected this problem, I was racking up contacts easily on 20, but the WES only had about
one hour left. I'm not sure how my TX offset ended up so wrong, but I did learn a valuable
lesson about checking these things before getting on the air. I still had a lot of fun
when I did have some time to set aside for working WES. It's good to get out of your
comfort zone and try different keying devices!

Didn't build a key, but had plenty of fun anyway. Still need lotsa practice with the
Christmas Present Delux Original. (TU KB4WYR!) Didn't even realize I'd worked the Special
Member until scoring time. First time I've had guts enough to run CQs via CW. Worked out
well for me, even running QRP at 5w. TNX to all and see you next month! de David KD0R

Glad to see propagation is coming back, esp. 15 meters. Thanks to all who worked me, got
several East Coast stations, which is always gratifying from California. Best wishes & 73.

AD5VC Operated by: Dana, 1555T from LA

My junkbox key was fun to use, but got tiring after a while. A piece of flexible aluminum
scrap that contacted a crimp connector screwed into a piece of 2x4. I used a felt pad on
the end to keep from touching the aluminum. 50 QSOs with it, and had to clean up the
underside once to remove the oxidation that built up. Worked 40, 20, 15.

My junkbox key

WA5VQM Operated by: Mark, 58C from TX

Could only participate sporadically due to springtime gardening and usual weekend
distractions, but still a lot of fun. The WIQP Sunday made 20M a challenge but the lower
bands were working well. First few contacts I was wondering why I was getting lower than
usual signal reports until I realized I was operating 40M with my 20M vertical! Darn
autotuner! Oh, well. Ran the FT-450 and my old novice J-38 throughout. Looking forward to
the next one. 73, Mark

WB5NPW Operated by: Jesse, 5633 from LA

Letters/numbers checked off? hmmm, missed that one. No homebrew key, just the Bencher
straight key. Had a lot of fun and made more contacts than I thought I would. Bands
were great, made a few contacts on 15 and while tuning around 10 worked Barbados (not an
SKCC contact tho). Didn't realize the Sprint Logger didn't conpensate for DST, had to do
it manually ... after the sprint. DUH! Looking forward to next month.

Missed 8 hrs---- Always seem to have out of town company the day of WES---but I was
having fun when I could operate

WA1AR Operated by: Alan, 4079T from MA

I did not make a junk box key but instead used and old Telegraph Apparatus "hole in the
wall". This key is big and clunky compared to Vibroplexs and needed constant adjustment.
Not quite junk but very noisy when it bangs into the damper.

Good conditions this month. We finally had a warm sunny day here in Wisconsin so the XYL
and I spent a lot of time outdoors. The WI QSO Party started at noon, local time, on
Sunday. All the loud local signals made it difficult to copy once the party was
underway. Regardless, it's always a pleasure working other CW loving SKCC members. I had
a good time. Thanks to all.

Pretty good sprint - bands were in great shape, no thunder storms in my area, just a great
time. It appeared that we had a super turnout. I heard folks on that I never heard before.

I had a great time using my Hack Saw Blade straight key. 40 meters got rather busy with
the other activities going on. I am somewhat tired but will get rested up for the next

timer. 73 de Slim (WA0BGV)

It seemed like there were many more SKCC stations on the air than in recent WESs. It was
a pleasure to see so many members I've never worked before. Thanks to all for the
contacts and thanks to the volunteers for making the WES possible. vy 73 - Tom

It was a fun sprint. I had just repaired my dipole earlier in the day, and was happy to
make all the good contacts.

Made out of 1/8th pipe fittings I collected. The tapper is a pneumatic air gauge.

March 2010 WES really was great fun! Best total for this station QRP. Nice to see 15 open
for a few contacts. Also glad to see a number of QRP operators on board. F6HKA, Bert had a
great signal on 40 meters but couldn't hear my peanut whistle. Thanks to K3UK, just great
pages and great fellowship on the sked pages.

K3NCO Operated by: Marc, 6144C from MD

Never had a cootie key, so I decided to make a junkox version. Almost all the parts came
from a power relay, including the black plastic base (which provided a lot of attachment
points/hardware). The moveable contact was made from a straightened moveable relay
contact, the large silver piece doing a good job, while the little riveted piece on the
back not doing as well. The "springs" were made of foam cut out of a sheet that packaged
ferrites and pierced with a multi-sized tap - I made a lot of these before I got a pair
that worked pretty well...kinda. The fact that I had never run a cootie before did not
help and I only had one QSO before the WES started, but I launched off regardless. A few
people suffered through this before the foam compressed to the point that the bouncing
dots generated by the small contact made it tough to copy, and I gave up and went back to
my Nye-Viking.

First try with Vibroplex "Presentation" just modified with "Extendadot". After using the
Bencher paddle all these years it's gonna take some real practice using the bug. Sure
helps to able to slow it down. Now if I can just remember that "dahs" have to be made
individually with the knob ...

Thanks to insomnia and work, only one contact ... 40 Meters at 0347 EDT.

I was only able to participate a few hours due to a family situation, but had a great time
as usual. My junkbox key was made from a plastic ID badge holder with tin foil lining the
badge holder and on the back of the card. I keyed it by pressing the ends of the card
against the back of the holder. Only used it for a few QSOs because this was my first
sprint with my shiny new Vibroplex Vibrokeyer. Way more fun to use than my plastic key,
but the junkbox key was fun to make, and I may refine it a bit for the next sprint.

What a fun WES this has been! I set a new personal "best" for total contacts, and I also
heard a lot of talented, new SKCC members enjoying themselves in the fray. And isn't it
great how improved band conditions help those QRP stations sound so loud! Maryland to
Southern California on a peanut whistle is not too shabby.

A special note of thanks to K3UK for his efforts to restore the sked page in time for
kick-off. I lurk there more often than I post, but I felt a real sense of loss when I
couldn't bring up that page. Finding the back-up site was like a reprieve.

No junk box key for me this time. I was totally preoccupied with fine-tuning the latest
toy in my collection. This Hi-Mound is my first long-handle key, and the photo is my
first stab at posting a picture here (hope that works out as well as the key did). 73

Well another fun junkbox sprintathon is in the bag!! Had a great time and worked a lot of
new members. didn't get to make a real junkbox key, but did manage to through some hose
clamps together and make some cw with it. You can see the video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s-ruPYxdyY
picture shows both keys used this time. I guess the little mini key may qualify since it's
made from a piece of "Junk" aluminum I found in the road!! Still working on it. Strongest
signal was Larry, AE4LD at 50 over on 40m. Big surprise was Phil, KL8DX. He started out
539 and "after" I worked him he went to 579.. heh heh.. Big thanks to the DX guys Bert,
Bernard and Vince, F6HKA, F5DE and S52CC. Always a pleasure working the DX. Special thanks
to my old friend Ulf, K1ULF. Glad to hear you back and glad you got the new rig on in time

What a FB tribute to Dave Ingram! I know he would be tickled to see all the junkbox keys
too. this year, I ended up using parts from last years junkbox key. I retrofitted last
years steak knife cootie with adjustable magnetic dampening. I used wider adjuster posts
for the magnets, drilled and tapped 3 holes on each side. That lets me change holes for
different ranges of dampening. It works best with the magnets closest to the contacts.
These are rare earth magnets. The 2 magnets are held on the lever just with magnetism,
those are 1/4 diameter. Then for each adjuster, I used a stack of 3 magnets 1/8th inch
diameter and attached them to the brass adjuster screw tips with JB Weld. These magnets
are super strong and really worked well. This key will make a good learning tool for
magnetic dampening on my future keys.

I spent way more time on the key, than I did on the air. I have to take more pain medicine
now, and can't get on the air as much anymore. I was, able to work Phil in Alaska. I also
couldn't resist and worked Pete W1PNS with the new club key. He is officially the first
person to ever work the new club key, hi. The new club key's arrival sure made it hard to
even think about junkbox keys. The junkbox sprint is my favorite WES theme of the year!

Until next time, 73 and also to my friend Dave Ingram, I will miss you! - RIP Dave..

Loads of fun - and 20M was not bad at all for a while. Had trouble finding a junk box
that I could use as a morse key, but eventually found one ( :0)

I only had a few minutes to operate this month. Just too many other things going on. So
just dabbled calling a few guys to hand out the WA mult. Hope to give it a better go next
month.....or the next.....or....I just never know what to expect as we get nicer weather
around here. We have a large piece of property and lots of upkeep. 73 Paul NG7Z

I was limited to only a few hours operating time...decided to Search and Pounce mostly
for new multipliers and only CQ'd a little. Nice to work Special SKCC Station VE3FUJ for
my only 160M QSO. Band conditions not as good and activity seemed down from February
WES. Plus, much other CW contest activity around SKCC designated frequencies contributed
QRM.

A sideswiper is likely in my near future as physical challenges prevent me from sustained
operation with my vintage J-38 straight key. Thanks to all for the WES QSOs...

Ran with my usual 200 watts & wires. Great turnout, nice to hear a lot of high numbers as
well as low ones. Worked a 12 year old (KB1TSU Jen)fb. Also worked a "slim", no not what
u think, a name Slim (WA0BGV 5465T). Worked several qrp stns, I recall 1 one watter !!
Nice to see the junker keys, no junker here just used my bug. Used it at times as a bug
other times as a straight key. Thunder storms made me qrt Friday nite around 11pm. Was
gonna be on all night, but once in bed, it felt toooo good. See all in next one.

This key truly lived up to its name. I used it for a few contacts but realized I was
making things tough on the receiving end. So I switched to the Nye Viking Master Key. Lots
of fun anyway.

I found that a section of a radiator hose clamp worked well as the lever arm for my junk
box cootie key, and planed on using it for the entire wes. Mother nature had other plans
for me. Living east of Binghamton NY, we are used to snow and took the three feet of it
last week in stride. However the 4 inches of heavy , wet snow Saturday morning took down
power lines and we were without power from 6 PM Saturday until 11:30 AM Sunday. Having
other plans for Sunday evening, I was only able to operate for three hours Sunday
afternoon, all on 20 meters, but it was worth the wait. I made my first DX contacts,
France and Spain. FRANK AA2XB SKCC 1681 T

I used my homebrew straight key on some of the contacts during the sprint.
However, as you can see by the photo, it is homebrew, but not junkbox. I used a precision
momentary-on switch for the contact. It works okay, and was fun to build.
I ordered one of the new club keys from Key Concepts and I look forward to using it
during the next sprint.

Thanks to all participants and Special Member Brion for this sprint.

Stormy WX here in the northeast so my wire antenna was lowered to handle the wind but it
played okay anyway.

I drew up a plan for a key to make from some scrap wood but I could not make it fit
together so I went on to Plan B.
Plan B is a code practice oscillator built into a 3.5 inch floppy disk case. The key is
modelled after my mini-keys
and is made from a section of hacksaw blade. It works fine.

Until next time, 73.

I thought the overall band conditions were pretty good. Worked Brion VE3FUJ on 160 meters
along with a few other stations but didn't hear too much activity on top band so I spent
most of my time on 80, 40, and 20. I agree with the other comments as to the high level of
participation. Almost every signal I heard was someone in the WES. I decided to use my 2
WW2 German keys this time, alternating between the Baumuster T1 and the Telefunken. Stayed
up pretty late Saturday night on 80, and that along with the time change really cut into
my sleep and I was still dragging when work came on Monday morning. Oh well, nother couple
of months and I should be retired - maybe even have time to build up a junkbox key.

Operated portable from a backcountry hut in Colorado during a winter storm. We had a
snowshoe trip in planned for over a year, so I brought AAA batteries, a SWL20+, and a
wire vertical that I threw over an exposed beam outside. Cold, windy, with snow so I ran
the coax inside, made two contacts, and called it good enough! The family was kind
enough to give me a half hour to play with my ham radio. I don't know if it was the
elevation, or just great band conditions, but 20 M was hopping. Ran 2 watts this month.

For this month's Junkbox Sprint, I thought I'd try my hand at a homemade junk box bug. I
took some breaks during the contest to struggle with getting the bug to work. Once I got
it working it was a blast to use. The last 28 out of 72 contacts were made with the junk
box bug; the rest were done with a modified Vibroplex. I tried to maintain the spirit of
a junk box project. The folded paper towel in the rear is the damper. The wadded up
paper towel in the front is the dit paddle return spring. This will make a good prop for
our club's upcoming "Fun With CW" program at our March monthly meeting of Radio Central
ARC. The design was inspired by this web page:
http://sites.google.com/site/oh6dccw/homemadebug.

The reason my score is changed. I received a call "R4" I was skeptical, so I asked for a
repeat again I received an "R4" not completely satisfied i marked it down as "R4", and
posted my log. Later my curiosity got the better of me, I started checking and couldn't
find the call anywhere, Hmmm I looked at the characters making up the letters, what if its
not R4 but an AE4 instead, or though the call was a distinct R4, I looked up AE4 on
Qrz.com and Bingo every thing fit. I could not find a reference to state in my notes I had
it marked down as RUS.I lost one multiplier, Bummer. Sorry about the MIX UP. Brion VE3FUJ

Just over a year now doing CW. Continuing to feel more comfortable running and calling
CQ in contest mode. Pile ups are wicked but fun. Had a few non-SKCC replies and directed
them to our website. My junkbox key is made using a tongue depressor. Contacts are brass
strips hot glued to the base and the underside if the "key". Many thanks to the
organizers at SKCC, and to all the ops.

With the Indiana QSO party in full swing on Sunday on 40 meters, it seems that most of
the SKCC operation took place above 7.100, which was good. I think it would be wise to
advertise that area of the band more for these SKCC events in order to avoid a lot of QRM
and calls from stations participating in the various QSO parties rather than in the SKCC
events.

NØSSS Operated by: Adam, 5770T from TX

For this event, I brought a dead hard drive back to life. Matter of fact, the hard disk
thinks it's in heaven now and loves being a straight key hi hi. The pair of NIB magnets
from the guts of the drive serves as a magnetic spring. Overall, the large moment arm,
small moment of inertia, fickety-free bearing, and smooth spring tension give this
junkbox key a featherlight touch. Interestingly, it is a right-handed key. So for this
key, I wiggle my finger and tap out the code in the same manner as I do for my touch
keyer in manual mode. In fact, I called cq by wiggling my left index finger on the touch
keyer and worked stations by wiggling my right finger on the junkbox key. Unfortunately,
out-of-town company unexpectedly arrived at my house 2 hours into the contest. Maybe
next month I'll have an opportunity to give the top 10 a try again. This sprint was
extremely fun and 55f my contacts were new. Very exciting and fast paced sprint. I
really liked the junkbox theme! I will enjoy mouting my junbox key on the wall like a
plaque to remember this sprint. cu fb ops agn
