K4CML Operated by: Colin, 224 from VA

My 1st WES, so my ears are ringing and my wrist is sore. Will have to get my
station setup improved before any more of these are done.

GØRDO Operated by: John, 2133T from England

Good fun as always. Some signals were strong - even VK4TJ / John was a fine 449 on 20M. As soon as darkness struck (1600Z) sigs dropped out, so ended early. I must sort out a wire for 40/80 again.

1st Sprint

N9GGE Operated by: John, 2886 from IL

Just for grins dug out my K1/4 and turned it down to 900mw hooked up to the G5RV. 6 of the 10 Qs I had were from MI. 40m was real good in the morning for about 500 miles. Thanks guys. See everyone next weekend. 73 72 John

VE3AKV Operated by: Bob, 5204T from ON

Hey there...

Not much time to play WES this time around, but managed about 2 hours. Thanks to all those who pulled out my QRP signal. See you all next time... 73/72

KH6OZ Operated by: George, 3975T from MT

Tnx for all the QSO's 73's George

K8LJG Operated by: John, 336T from MI

Not a lot of time this WES ! Maybe next time.

W5ALT Operated by: Walt, 103T from TX

Well, between a college graduation and birthday, I only got to operate a grand total of 1 hour at the end. It was still fun, though! Hopefully next time I can sneak into my cave and go the whole sprint.

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

My first WES in over a year due to antenna deficiencies and family distractions. It was good to work some real DX during the event. Thanks to all.

Glad to see both 40 and 20 were open enough for some QSOs. SKCC members are the politest hams on the bands, even during a contest.

KE5PWL Operated by: Eric, 4229T from LA

This was a fun time for me. I really enjoyed the letter challenge. I used a IC-718 100W A G5RV ant. And several bugs, i would switch out every few contacts :-) 1952 presentation, 1937 Mc Elroy TAC bug, 1962 original, 1976 lightning bug. 73' ..

Sick at start but got about 2 hrs in between having to go fix the neighbors tractor. Good WES. New 2 wavelength 160 loop doing great on 40 and 80. checking out 160 later tonight. Looking forward to sks night. Getting a little better at this.

W3RT Operated by: Red, 3237T from PA

Neat theme! Bands somewhat cooperative; time on radio not cooperative. Spent hours shopping in the rain with the One Who Must Be Obeyed!

Rig: Kenwood TS 940 at 85 watts, sloper at 25 ft.on 40 & 80; and C3SS at 30 ft for 20m. Key was the Flameproof.

Thanks to the ones I was able to work for their patience. Lots of signals, and glad to hear the activity.

K6JF Operated by: Jim, 4261T from CA

Rough start with only 2 QSOs Saturday, but picked up Sunday. Biggest surprise was working F6HKA, he was loud for a good part of the day. Only one new C/T number, but did pick up a new state (RI), tnx Myrt. Two more to go...where was MS and NH????

W9DLN Operated by: Dan, 3635T from WI

Thanks everyone. This was the most fun and productive weekend sprint ever. It started off slow but really got going after the first couple of hours. Again a special thanks for K2RFP and K3UK. Couldn't have done it without you guys.

AB1BW Operated by: George, 2468T from CT

What a great sprint. It was nice to see better conditions and all the activity for this one. After being off the air for a couple of months it was good to participate again. Rig used was an Icom 746 Pro at 100 watts and a windom at 50 feet or a Hex Beam at 30 feet. See you next month. 73, George

NT9K Operated by: Bill, 1926T from FL

I wanted to participate much more than I did. I missed lots of you this time. I did get to work Bert F6HKA for a new dx contact. Wish I could have played more, maybe I can do better in the DX Travaganza on Dec 19 and 20th? I'll try! For this sprint, I used my Kenwood TS-870 at 100w into cushcraft MA5B mini beam, up about 40 feet. The keys I used were the Amplidan, the Begali Blade, the GHD GT501MIL and a new old bug that a close friend just gave me for Christmas. It's a 1916 Vibroplex and needs a full restoration and just the project I was looking for.

This being the last WES of the year, I want to say a special thank you to Dick K2RFP, for taking over the WES and doing such a great job this past year. Thank you Dick. Thank you Gene KL7GLL, for doing the WES stats and awards too. Most of all, I want to say Merry Christmas to you all! Until next time, 73. Bill NT9K..

Happy Holidays!

Tough sprint - bands were very poor on Saturday but got better on Sunday. Unfortunately, the noise floor at my qth also came up with the signals. Missed a lot of qso's with the qrp guys.

N8BB Operated by: Werner, 5433T from MI

Had another fantastic time. So many good ops out there with the ears to work my qrp 5 watts. Walt LW3EX beat the buzzer at the end for the last Q, and Jim KK7YJ also surprised on 40 with a great signal. Randy and John on 160 with great signals. So many very good contacts. Only wish I had gotten Vince but qrp was pushing it on 40. To all you friends out there, Have a safe and very HAPPY HOLIDAYS and we will be at it again next year. 73es to all, Werner N8BB/qrp

W5ZR Operated by: Bert, 2931T from LA

This was a great weekend sprint. Lots of activity. The larger number of members is showing up as more activity. I decided to run 500W this time to try to work more DX; it worked! There were some very good signals from Europe, and S52CC, Vince, was one of the best. Thanks to all who gave me a qso.

Great event as always. Worked casually but pretty good band conditions on 40 and 20 M. Rig K3 @ 5Watts. Ant EDZ @ 55'. I did use my beam for two Alaska contacts.

NV9X Operated by: Jim, 1358 from IL

Played a little here and there on Sunday. Very first contact,F6HKA. No other DX. No Canada. 1 Alaska. Got some new calls to add for my very slow climb to Centurion. Always enjoy. Looking forward to next weekend. Thanks SKCC.

WA1AR Operated by: Alan, 4079t from MA

Bands were good today. Use 80M,40M and 20M. Some of the west coast on 40M were weak and had to really listen. Used a mix of S&P and CQ. For a while I used the B VFO to quickly search between CQs. USA DX was KL8DX with a nice signal fro AK. F6HKA had a strong S9+ signal for most of the morning and into the afternoon on 20M. S52CC was a bit hard to copy on 40M. Used a 1952 Vibroplex Champion.

Had a great time. Was slow on Sat evening until 80 opened up to east. Worked 80/40/20/15.

AF2Z Operated by: Drew, 2082T from NJ

Dreary wet weather here, perfect for bouncing radio waves off the ionosphere all day. Worked only 80/40/20 with 40m being the hottest band. Got some DX this time: Rob G4LMW and Bob I0QM on 40m, Bert F6HKA on 20m. Nice signals from AK: Phil KL8DX and Bob WL7WH, both on 20m for a long spell Sunday afternoon (hope it is this easy to work them during K3Y 2010!). Not much action from the West Coast, only Don W7GB in WA, and Dennis N6DIT in CA, both on 20m. All in all, a pretty active sprint. My rig: Elecraft K3 running 12 watts, 100 ft wire up 30 ft, Junker straight key.

Very enjoyable sprint, as always. Did not have a lot of time for it, but it was fun.

The DX was a nice surprise

KL8DX Operated by: Phil, 3800T from AK

A three contest weekend for me; Feld Hell, PSK and WES. Spent most of my time doing the WES on Sunday but I took a few digital breaks. Best DX for me was F6HKA, Bert and LW3EX, Walt. I worked Bert on both 40 and 20 and he had a great signal for a large part of the contest. 20 meters started rough on Sunday but ended up being pretty darn good.

My first moderate effort at operating as it has been a busy year for me. Thanks to all those that make these contests possible. Thanks to all those that yelled my way and hopefully I didn't miss that many. I would like to wish all the SKCC Membership the best of holidays, health, and DX as we close out this year and soon bring in another. See you again in 2010!

I enjoyed this Weekend Sprint. On Saturday night there were lots of stations in
the noise on 40 and 80 but I had no luck. Sunday afternoon was better on 20
and I made 9 contacts and the last one on 40 in the last couple of minutes.
It was -30 degrees F here and a good day to be inside going between making coffee and listening for SKCC stations. It was great to catch up with old friends and to make new ones. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Until next time - 73,

My first (successful) Sprint!

I'm still shaky on the key and get befuddled at high(er) copy speeds -- but I managed to get one contact without either of us pulling our respective hair out. Thanks, Curt! (KU8L)

I tried listening for activity Saturday PM but the bands were awful. I got tied up in to-do lists Sunday AM and didn't get on until late. I heard many folks on 40m and jumped on Curt's CQ.

Rig: Icom 756 Pro III, barefoot. Antenna: Multi-wire OCF dipole @ 25'. Key: Lionel J-38.

Worked a bunch on 10M Sunday afternoon. F6HKA booming in here but no other Europeans

K4UFT Operated by: Ted, 4289C from SC

As usual, 40 Meters was the only band useable here in upstate SC. IC-7000 at 20 Watts to home brew Hamstick vertical. J-37 key. Got tired of chasing the mike around the desk so I put it in a block of Styrofoam. Now all I have to do is reach over and punch the mike's control buttons without having to pick it up ... filter, band change, memorized frequencies, etc. The IF DSP really helps to pull out the weak ones.

Our time was split between the XYL's birthday, SKCC and the 10 meter event.
Many thanks to all stations that worked me and thanks to XE1CHE, IK2RMZ, F6HKA,
LW3EX, KL8DX, EA1EVA, and of course VE3AKV for big signals. Conditions were
better than usual here in the mid west. fyi: the station was cleaned up for
the Christmas picture. The tree was a gift from a friend, the Nut Cracker is
just one of many I have collected. The stocking is one of many that hangs on
the family room fireplace with all the other family members. The XYL is quite
a decorator. 73 to all Happy Holidays

Couldn't operate on Sunday. Put most effort on the beginning. So got S52CC, Thanks Vince, a very great QSO with big signals from You. Propagation and noise was terrible the early two hour, searched others neighbors without full success. Another extra hour before realize to have less than two for sleeping in the whole weekend. Then propagation wide open on forty to NA/USA but must QRT for safe. Thanks everyone, enjoyed for the QSO. Again a special thanks for Dick K2RFP and Andy K3UK, Great WES and very HAPPY HOLIDAYS. 73 Bob I0QM

I made a few WES contacts from my cottage in QC. It was great to work some SKCC DX on 20m
(G0RDO and F6HKA were booming in). Also nice to work Dan W9DLN to help him out with QC in
his quest for the Canadian Maple Award. I like the relaxed nature of these Sprints.
Looking forward to working many of you on ARRL SKN.

Rig was a Yaesu FT-857, Vibroplex Know-Code key, and dipole at 35'.

Lots of fun! I was able to operate for half of the event. Key: touch keyer in manual mode. I called cq's wiggling my left index finger at 5-8 wpm. I worked QSO's wiggling my right index finger at 12-15 wpm. So I didn't get tired at all this time around. I enjoyed all the contacts with you fine ops. Happy holidays.

AC7T Operated by: Doug, 5368C from WA

[Reposted with score correction.] Good fun as always. I particularly enjoyed working newer members, including F6HKA. Conditions here were mediocre on Saturday, but I had some modest success on 80 meters. 20 seemed in good shape on Sunday, but I sometimes had trouble copying even strong signals (like Kl8DX and W7GVE) through my local power line noise. Still, I had a few fun ragchews and picked up some new numbers as well. Thanks organizers and participants.

KU8L Operated by: Curt, 5380T from MI

COnditions started out pretty poor on 40M. Currently stuck on 40M and above.
Only listened on 20 for a few minutes Saturday Nite. After about 10PM or so,
40 began to pick up and I was pretty productive until rest break at 0200.
Back up at 0600 again on 40M until 20M opened up. Still, 80ame from 40 only.
Without a beam on 20 and 15, only the loudest stations are really workable so
I don't spend much time digging stuff out there.

It was fun. I dont have a really accurate wattmeter and wonder about the actual
output of the Drakes..180 in, 58ff...its close. but hey..its all for fun.

BTW, this pair of Drakes is my original rig from 1967..used nearly every day,
and I just replaced my first set of finals a few months ago.

Used the Navy HV insulated key back and forth with the 1949 Vibroplex standard
with the home made extension. I'm sure you all could tell when I switched back
and forth! :)

Loads of fun--worked many numbers that were new to me. Finished Tx2 and a good
start on Tx3 so it was a productive WES. Thanks to all and see you in the next one.

Curt

You did a FB job considering the compromise antenna you were using.

others then and since that we can enjoy our wonderful radio hobby.

And a message for the season: Peace.

KD6HTN Operated by: Kate, 5405 from CA

Was unprepared for this WES. Somehow I thought it ended Saturday & not Sunday. Had been
practicing on side tone with my bug (with the official SKCC Extendadot on it!), got tired
& started scanning 20 m. Was surprised to fine it open & full of WES QSO's. At first I
actually used the bug, but decided quickly that I was messing up too much. Then I started
using the dah side as a straight key, until I gave up & hooked up my straight key!
Anyway, thanks for putting on these sprints so often; they are helping my CW greatly. I
will try to be more prepared next time.

had only a couple of hours for the WES this time. A token submittal, I didn't even figure

Thanks to all who made 2009 such a great year for SKCC, and wishing everyone a great

W2RC Operated by: R.C.A.R.C., 5073 from NY

W2RC was QRV with three operators - Dick, K2RFP, Jerry, K2PAY, and Neil, KC2KY.
40m was a little noisy for us on Saturday night but we managed to make a few contacts.
On Sunday morning, after a quick rotator repair, we were able to take advantage of the
good band conditions on 20m. We had arm chair copy on F6HKA and KL8DX on 20. John, G0RDO,
made a valiant attempt to work us on 20 but the propagation was just not there for us.
Walt, LW3EX, was our only 15m QSO. Vince, S52CC, was barely audible 40 and we tried but
could not quite work him. We had a ball and met our goal of earning Centurion status
for the radio club. Onward to Tribune!

73 and happy holidays to all from Dick, Jerry, and Neil.

KC2KY Operated by: Neil, 3245T from NY

Happy holidays to all and thanks for another fun sprint. I operated under my own call
for the first two hours, entirely on 40 and 80 meters, then operated as W2RC for the
Radio Central ARC team. Dick, K2RFP, Jerry, K2PAY, and Yours Truly, Neil, KC2KY, added
enough new SKCC numbers to W2RC's cumulative log in the December WES to achieve Centurion
status for Radio Central Amateur Radio Club.
