W5ALT Operated by: Walt

Had a lot of fun, but the bands sure didn't cooperate. Also had thunderstorms and had to shut down a couple of times and wait.

AB4PP Operated by: Johnpaul

Got in and out as much as I could. Very hot here today 100F. Stayed inside and watched game on TV and worked some of the contest. Had a hard time with QRN and static levels. Want to thank all stations who worked me at 4 watts today. I bumped up one time for one station because he needed my number. First time in a while I did that. Helped him and that was a good thing. Now only 4 more to work for my T award. Look forward to the next WES contest. 72/73 de JP AB4PP

W6UT Operated by: Dennis

Worked 20/40. No action on 80/15/10. Condition were not good. Lot of QSB on signals out here. Operated mostly with 46 Blue Racer Deluxe.

K4UPG Operated by: Kelly

Lots of QRN and some local pulse noise that was strong at times so made it tough to hear clearly and was only good between crashes. Still had a great time down by the lake working qrp portable with Wilderness Sierra on 40 and 20m via my Buddistick at 16 feet up. Appreciate the qso's I got despite only having a couple hours on Sunday afternoon to play. CU AGN. 73, Kelly K4UPG

WD4AXA Operated by: Ted

Thanks to all that shared numbers with me. Lots of new ones for me. Lots of three digit numbers. Lets have another next week. 73,s Ted

This was a leisurely WES for me. Ran S&P only, looking for new folks and saying hello to old friends. Got to use my new "mini" for qso's with Rob GM4LMW and Phil KL8DX! 20M seemed to be in poor shape until I heard Rob's great sig.

Experienced all kinds of antenna surprises, with the vertical pulling in W5ALT better than the 40M NVIS dipole, and getting a shock from static build up on the balanced feed for the mini when preparing for thunderstorms. Will add bleeder resistors for that...

Next WES I'll probably get competitive again. Look out Russ (not!). WES is my favorite ham activity, bar none.

Aunt Anna (my "mini")

The key this time was a new acquisition, a huge but nice-looking Hi-Mound HH-710. This key definitely does not walk around on the desk.

I had the pleasure of working some new folks this time around, but also ran into plenty of guys whose info I already have memorized!

Thanks for the fun, and see you for SKS. 73

Had a lot of fun when I could get on the air. Thunderstorms in my area kept me off the most of Sunday but I did pretty good Saturday night with over 80 contacts. Picked up the elusive '8S' for my Fists NANFA award after chasing this last one for over a year. A really great weekend.

I hunted SKCC stations concurrently with operation in WAE CW. Conditions have continued to be exceptionally poor for both events as well as the MDC QSO Party. Pray for sunspots. I have a Hopi Indian friend who has been dancing the "Sun Dance" with thus far negative effect seeing as it's been 29 days since we've seen a sunspot. CU all for next WES. Bert, K6CSL

NG7Z Operated by: Paul

Split my time between the WAE and the sprint. Condx were just awful on 20M Sunday. So many weak signals from the east coast. Used the GHD 504 key I bought from Bill W2BLC. What a great key and a solid feel. So much better than the Chinese key I was using. Equipment Ic-756 P3, Drake L4B at 500 watts, F12 C3 yagi. CU next month.

Rig: Ten Tec Jupiter
PWR: 100W
ANT: Hamstick whip attached to balcony on 10th floor of high-rise apartment
Key: Vibroplex Straight SE
Bands worked: 40 and 20 meters

It was a good day to be inside due to mid-nineties temps outside. Special shout to the following for giving me contacts on both bands:

Hope to work you all on the next sprint/wes. 73 de N8AAI

Saturday night was great. Sunday after Church was thunderstorms and no radio! I just got back from a UK trip with total CW deprivation and the WES was like a dive into a cool pool on a hot day. Started out rusty but it came back quickly. Even with reduced operation because of storms it was a really great event.

It turned out to be a pretty good sprint despite thunderstorm interruptions. 20m was the best band this go-round, beating 40m by a few contacts. Got seven QSOs on 15m, the most ever for me in a SKCC sprint. Only got 10 Q's on 80m-- too noisy, I guess. Worked John N9FC and Jim N3MVX on three bands. There were a fair number of unfamiliar calls-- that's good! No QSO's with 6-land or 7-land-- that's bad! No DX here but did work Bill KA8VIT on USS Cod sub (W8COD), sounding good on 20m! My rig: Elecraft K3 at 12 watts; 100' endfed wire up 30'; Junker straight key.

KL7GLL Operated by: Gene

My "little antenna that could" was an over-achiever this month. Because of local ordinances, I've always used only an indoor dipole antenna (center-fed "slinky") in the loft over my garage. Most of my contacts were on 20 and 40 mtrs, but a good showing on 15 mtrs with 7 contacts and even one on 10 mtrs. The most memorable part of WES was 15 minutes on 20 mtrs between 2140Z and 2155Z when I worked 5 new multipliers in a row, including KL8DX and G4ELZ (thanks Phil and Jeff) for my extreme DX in both directions. Nice to see excellent Canadian participation and a host of new calls (to me). Wow, what a fun WES!!

AB1BW Operated by: George

Despite the QRM, it was a great sprint. We had pretty good conditions in the northeast. Worked stations on 10 through 80 meters and had several stations on multiple bands. I only had to shut down once because of thunderstorms. Had lots of fun.

KD8JHJ Operated by: Mike

I enjoyed this WES. Thanks all for the numbers. A first for me: QSOs on 15 and 10 meters. Worked 10, 15, 20 and 40 meters. Power 50 watts and key was Vibroplex SK standard.

AC2C Operated by: Ron

There seemed to be a lot of activity throughout the sprint period and I only had some short periods to operate. I'm expecting some fairly nice scores.

NT9K Operated by: Bill

I did pretty good Saturday night, but felt bad Sunday and didn't get on very much. I finished key number 9 Saturday morning and used it for the entire sprint. The highlight was working Randy KB4QQJ who was using my key #8, while I was using key #9. Both keys are sideswipers and Randy did great using his.

I ran my Kenwood TS-870 with 100 watts into MA5B mini beam and full wave delta loop for 40 meters. Even with limited time, I still had fun. Until next time, 73.

K1PUB Operated by: Chas

Band conditions so-so, a lot of QRN on 80 and 40. 20 M seemed to pick up Sunday afternoon and evening and it was nice to see 10 M open. Enjoyed working G4ELZ (two bands), G4LMW and S52CC, thank you. Made QSOs on 80-10, tried 160 Saturday evening but no go.

All in all, another fun sprint.

K6JF Operated by: Jim

Very poor band conditions once again and some QRN this time as well. Did manage 27 Qs on 20/40, but it took hundreds of CQs to do so. Nothing heard in the 1, 2, 3, and 4 call sign areas!

KB4QQJ Operated by: Randy

That was fun,.....HOT, but fun! It was 98° here in NC and I was out portable again. Bands were pretty good to me. I made a run for high QRP, but looks like George spanked me. It was great to work Bill on his new cootie serial #9 with my new Serial #8 Cootie key he made for me. Number 8 WON'T rest on the shelf Bill. Thanks a million.
Worked several non members and that's always a pleasure. I'm looking for VA7DER to pop up on the roster. Special thanks to Larry, AE4LD and Richard, KI4OFH, two locals I don't get to work often. Too Close, hi hi Hope to see a lot more of them. Strongest signal this time was Dick, K2RFP at 30 over, middle of the afternoon, on 40 meters...go figure. Ran this WES portable using a 51 foot random wire hung as an inverted "L" and a 102 foot doublet as an inverted "V" fed with 300 Ohm. Thanks for the fun and see you in the SKS.
Or a "Mystery Sprint"...eh Dick? Randy KB4QQJ

This was my first participation in the WES. Thanks to K9LJB for alerting me it was on this weekend. Great fun...I started with a Speed-X straight key at the age of 15 with my mighty Heathkit DX-20 back in 1958 and used that same key again this weekend. Unfortunately, it's the only piece of equipment I have from my early Novice days. Worked 40M Saturday night and 20M Sunday morning, using my Knwd TS-850 @ 70 watts and a 132 ft. center fed dipole fed with 450 ohm ladderline and tuner. Looking forward to the next WES.

Regretfully, not much time to spend in the Weekend Sprint for August. My low-band antennas are down for the summer, but 20 meters was briefly tried on Sunday. There were other contest activities going on, so only four SKCC QSO's resulted. KL7 and G4 were heard, but not worked. See you in October since I will be traveling east in early September.

K4UFT Operated by: Ted

Cndx not good here in Upstate SC. Didn't get to work continuously for the Sprint. S&P on 20M with IC-703+ @10 Watts using ChiCom Army K5 key. My usual homebrew vertical on the patio. Got the fever for a Junker or Navy FP key.

K2RFP Operated by: Dick

Thanks to all participants and to John for operating as the Special SKCC Member.

G4ELZ is the only DX I could have worked but my 25 watts to a wire could not
compete with the other stations calling him. S52CC tried calling me a few times
but I could not collect enough signal to make a QSO of it.

Until next time, 73.

Work got in the way of the WES again, but I had a couple hours. Had a lot of fun as always. New key this month was the Signal Electric 112-K straight key, the latest addition to my collection of Signal Electric keys. Most of my time was spent on 20 meters, 40 was very noisy here.
