Got a late start and then it got hot in the garage. Ran into 2 that wanted to ragchew and that killed some more time. The bands were good. Had fun, that the point.

W4CU Operated by: Tom

Had only an hour or so but wanted to make a few QRP contacts. I appreciate the good ears of all I worked. vy 73 - Tom

K9ZMD/6 Operated by: Gary

The antenna this time was one of those Hasty & Poor models, so I ran 90 watts instead of trying QRP. My signal attracted a number of QRP stations, and it was a real kick to pull them through for a completed contact. My apologies to those few that faded into the noise before I could even copy a call sign.

Was it just my location, or were conditions miserable everywhere on Sunday afternoon? By 2230Z, it seemed like everyone had either disappeared into the noise or pulled the big switch already. Hoping for better conditions, and a better antenna, next month. 73

IARU tired me out. Bad propagation here on Sunday.

W6UT Operated by: Dennis

Kind of slow out here. 20 opened up a little towards end of WES. Did get K1TXU CO on 15M. One less to go for WAS SKCC Members on 15M. K0LUW was my last Q at 2358 on 20M.

N9GGE Operated by: John

K1 @ 900mw. I waited until the IARU test was over at 1200Z before I made a serious attempt for contacts. Boy...the bands sure fell apart overnight. Ed KG4W tnx for QSO

WA1AR Operated by: Alan

Band conditions were not bad but expected more with the recent sunspots. Quite a few new call and a few non members. I even heard a non member calling CQ WES. Fun Time.

Alan WA1AR

KC6ZZT Operated by: Joe

Glad I got on the air, even for only one QSO.
Happy to see propagation is getting better these days.

AB1BW Operated by: George

Never worked QRP before and can say that it was quite an experience. At times I didn’t think I had an antenna up or was putting out a signal. I now have a great appreciation for low power operators everywhere. It’s not as easy as it seams…. Can’t wait to see what next months theme is going to be. Maybe a sprint for ‘blow your doors off’ high power! See you then, 73, George

W9DLN Operated by: Dan

Great time everyone! Started off with a band and kept going until the wee hours. Got up just in time to see the IARU contest end. Sunday was pretty slow until the afternoon when the multipliers started coming in.

Thanks to the many people that fed me points. Also thanks Dick, K2RFP for the sprint, and of course Andy K3UK and his sked page. I couldn't have this much fun without their efforts.

Hope the boycot is over next month. I miss the guys that sat this one out.

Glad this one was pretty intense. I really got my fix. Next month I'll be doing lighthouses again during the WES so I won't be here much. I'll be sure to stop by to give and take a few points.

73 all, Dan, W9DLN, 3635T

K5ENA Operated by: John

Made contacts on 20 and 40. Band conditions not the best with bad QSB. One minute a signal was 599, the next minute zero. Always enjoy our Sprints.

Icom IC706 turned down to 5 watts, using a Butternut vertical (elevated). 12v car battery.
I must admit, as much as I love the SKCC sprints, it's hard to sit inside in front of a radio all day when the weather outside is so beautiful! ;-)

AF2Z Operated by: Drew

Friday night was pretty much a blowout: IARU contest, t/storms, and SSB QRM on the 40m novice band (band was better when the SW BC stations ruled there)... I quit after two hours with only 5 contacts. Sunday morning had some activity, then the bands went wooosh! and never really came back-- got only 20 more contacts for the day. No U.S. contacts west of MO. A few vy strong sigs: Walt VE3HNE and John N9FC, both on 20m; Jim W1WIU and John KA1XC on 40m in the final hour. Finally got some distance with Alan HC2A on 20m, 559 both. My rig: Elecraft K3 @ 12 watts; 100' x 30' endfed wire; Junker straight key.

N2JNZ Operated by: George

Had fun but seemed quiet. 20 wasnt much good but 40 in good shape !! Ten Tec Argosy 525D , 5 watts to a ZeroFive vertical for 40 meters. Used my Blue Racer for the whole WES

KG4W Operated by: Ed

Lots of fun but lonely at times. K3UK site kept things lively. Ran QRP in this sprint as did most (I think). DX qsos were down (guess due to qrp plus poor bands). Worked Allan HC2A on 1 band & 1 French (non member) station plus 2 VE stations, that was sum total of my DX. Only lasted till 0130z Sat night & joined in again at 1100z Sun am. Hope all had fun & cu on the bands.

WA5VQM Operated by: Mark

Not much time and the bands weren't too cooperative but still enjoyed participating. Would have tried QRP but the condx seemed so poor Sunday I figured I'd try that some other time. Hope the bands are better next sprint. Missed hearing a lot of the "usual suspects". 73, Mark

NG7Z Operated by: Paul

After 10 hours of the IARU contest, I just couldn't muster up the motivation to work more radio Sunday. Only spent 20 minutes on the sprint and then quit. It might have been different if I had opted to go QRO but I had promised myself to go QRP in line with this month's theme. Originally, I had thought to quit the IARU at the start of the WES, but there was just too much QRM on the sprint frequencies. Unfortunate timing for the sprint this month. Anyway, next month will be better.

Worked a few hours on Saturday night on 40m using a 1/4 wave vertical with one radial. Worked until the park closed at 10 PM and came home for the night. Went to another park for the Sunday part and was going to put up my 66 feet doublet but I ran out of fishing line to hold it up so it ended up being a sloper with the one end at about 20 feet and the other at about 3. Didn't work nearly as well as I wanted but made several more contacts on 20m. Lots of new numbers heard and worked though and enough strong signals for 2x QRP. There were some major traffic jams on 14.050 and the proximity which made it kind of hard to work the stations even though they were both strong! Overall, a fun and enjoyable sprint! See you all next time, hopefully with an antenna in the air next time! 73/72 Tom

WA1VIL Operated by: Greg

Too nice outside to be down in the "mancave" for a all out effort. This is the first time that I did a contest all QRP-not big numbers for a lot of work but a lot of fun nonetheless. Heard HC2C but couldn't break the pileup. Thanks to everyone who pulled me out of the noise.

73,
Greg

Lots of QRN and storm noise on Saturday night, so had to make a couple contacts with 100W otherwise I would have been in the 1-5 watt category. Highlight of the sprint was working a non-skcc station (K4QO) with the 50mw crystal controlled transmitter I breadboarded the night before the sprint (see pic). He also was QRP and operating the ARCI event. 73's, Eric.

Saturday evening was extremely noisy due to thunderstorms, but Sunday was much better. Had 2 contacts on 15M, band seemed good but almost no signals.
Snagged HC2A on 40M (tnx Allan!)and tried a few QRP contacts but stayed at 100W the rest of the time.
Had fun, 73!

QRN made it rough late in the day. Otherwise it was lots of fun. My 1917 flame proof key and my Boston Spark key got a workout. And I limbered up my Vibroplex Know-Code key. Thanks everyone.

Remodeling project going on at the house, so no time for radio. I did sneak up to the shack long enough to make 2 contacts. It had been a long time since I submitted a score in a WES. Hopefully one of these times I will actually be able to spend some time on the radio.

N4RE Operated by: Rick

I tried QRP operation and resisted the urge to QRO. I'll probably go back to 100 watts just because I'm lazy. TKS & 73

N9QU Operated by: Leo

Quite a bit of QRN es QSB during the time I was on. Heard lots of calls but only a few rose above the noise long enough to copy. Perhaps next month. Thanks to all es 73.

Busy weekend here, but with the rig on the porch I could easily jump in and out between chores. Allan (HC2A) was very strong here Saturday night, but he never did hear me. Conditions were fair and I just stuck with 20 meters. Rig: Argonaut V @ 5 watts to a vertical. Great fun and a couple of new SKCC members for me. 73.

Summertime portable on the porch with battery power (finally some nice weather here!).

WA6L Operated by: John

I could only work the contest for an hour while the wife was out shopping. But I must have picked a great hour. There were plenty of stations heard and conditions on 20M were wide open. Thanks for the contacts and I hope to be able to work a lot longer next time. 73, John, WA6L

I waited till after the TEST that ended 1200z Sunday. Stuck to 20m - called and called (100w) listened and listened but nothing. At last I heared HC2A but QSB struck. Most frustrating with nil QSO's. FT-897D / 100watts / MA6V vertical / key a Marconi made Redifon marine key.

K1PUB Operated by: Chas

Don't know whether it was conditions or lack of participants, but this was the quietist WES I remember. Also had very limited operating time, but I enjoyed the few QSOs I made.

AC2C Operated by: Ron

I only had a few short periods available to get into the Sprint so only had 8 QSOs total - three were QRP with the new KX1.

I read all the whining about QRP so limited QRP operations to (a) Calling CQ and listening for responses; or (b) answering a station I knew was also QRP.

I just don't see how ANYONE could have a complaint about that.

Thank you to all of you who works my station. Poor conditions in higher bands, most activity on 20 and 40 mts. This time should be qro so i used a ts-570S with Swan Mark II amp, ant are th6dx for 20m and homebrew vert. for 40m. Key a a navy flameproof which works flawlesly. (check photo).
WES is always fun. Congrats to all qrp stations wich did nice work.

Saturday evening the bands were crowded but worked a few SKCC members including ZL2BLQ, Stan had a great sig on 20M. Sunday morning I had a delayed start due to a line of storms thru Missouri. Finally settled in to a pattern on 20M, all the while jumping to 15 and 10 to check propagation. I caught up with HC2A on 20m, good job Allan and thanks for being there. I also ran across W8COD from the USS COD Submarine museum, Bill KA8VIT had visitors in the radio room while he banged out on CW.
FYI: I decided not to work QRP but the QRP stations that I worked had great signals here.....good to hear everyone 73's from the STORMY mid west....
p.s. George, sri I missed you, the "Blue Racer" looks great...thanks for sharing the picture....

Thanks Dick for another great WES and Thanks Andy for the sked page! Had fun as always. Operated for an hour or so at AE4LD shack, then spent Sunday working hard for Allan, Thanks Allan, HC2A, you were a solid 599. It was fantastic to hear all the QRP signals out there. With ARCI and SKCC it was a hoot. Huge signal was K1MBF, Larry and Werner N8BB, both were 50 over. I don't see their results but had to be big. They were steady working stations. It was great to hear a lot of new members too. I made quite a few first time contacts. Great. Thanks to Dan for three bands and a special "Thanks" to Allen, HC2A. Well Done.
Thanks to all and see you next month. BCNU

I paddled my kayak out to an island in Loon Lake, twenty five miles West of Lake Tahoe and set up camp. Strung my dipole up in the trees and tested it but no contacts made. My fellow kayak campers arrived Friday morning and asked about the wire and nylon line strung between the trees. I said it is my internet connection and several believed me.Friday evening I tested the setup; the dipole, LDG QRP autotuner, QRP Plus, and Navy Flameproof. Made a few contacts, furthest K8CMD in Cleveland OH, then shut down to conserve battery. Saturday (Sunday 0000Z) I fired up made a couple contacts, then the rains came.
Between downpours I managed 5 QSOs. I copied HC2A making numerous contacts but he never copied my puny 5W, but I think he heard it because there was a long pause between the CQs! Exhausted from a full day of kayaking and eating I gave up for the night. The next morning brought more rain and distan thunder, I could hear strong static crashes on 40M so I disconnected the antenna and played it safe. A struggle to get 5 Qs but what a blast.

No matter what weekend the WES is held, it will conflict with another contest. I AM glad that it was only one of the 24 hour ones this month (hi). Many thanks to all who participated, especially Jim W1WIU in The Ocean State. Not only for choosing to get on for the WES but also for being able to hear my weak IL sigs on TWO bands. Must have been a "band opening" (HI). Hope all had fun. GL. 73, Jay AA9KH

Crappy condx as well as the CQ Test! Only 11 Qs of which 9 were in CA-WA-MT-AZ! Highlight was my only Q east of the rockies right at the end. It took a couple repeats at his end, but the new number was #50 towards my Tx2 and was my 45th SKCC state. Thanks to Jim N3MVX in PA!

AD5VC Operated by: Dana

Poor conditions and the antenna could use some TLC.

I hadn't planned on any special certificate for this sprint but after reading the comments and looking at the photos I thought Eric (KA2BSK) deserved special recognition. Below is an image of the certificate he will receive via email.
