NT9K Operated by: Bill

I think this was the best sprint that we have had yet. It was great to have so many SKCC DX members joining in and actually being able to work them was even better.

Propagation was better than we have had before and even the RTTY QRM didn't seem to keep us from working each other.

Thank you Andy K3UK for operating as K9SKC and thanks to all those who help me manage this event. Especially Dick K2RFP, who sacrificed his last hour of the sprint to fix a problem.

I wish you all luck in the key drawing. It is a very nice key and I wish you could all win it. It is just my way of saying thank you for all the wonderful support you all have given to the Weekend Sprintathon.

73, Bill NT9K

I used straight keys and bugs the first half and used this sideswiper the rest of the time.

This is the first sprint I've entered in forever but I had a little time to kill so got on 20m CW and decided since the band was open to try QRP. Nobody seemed to notice, all but one copied me FB on the first call. Thanks guys!

K6JF Operated by: Jim

Surprised to finish with 32 contacts after Saturday night's start. After 4 hours on 80/40 only netted 4 contacts. Signals were weak and the noise level was high.

Even today it was tough to pull out the signals in the QSB on 20m, lost quite a few. Did pick up one new state (NJ) and had another (RI) but lost it in the QSB. I really need 20m to open up so I can get those Eastern states!

Had fun on this one, but had to cut it short ... chores for most of the day. Thanks for those who watched me via my web cam.

Well, in keeping with the theme, *this* DX station supported the sprint as best I could. Suprises included a 10 mtr contact with Nao, JO3HPM,a "wake up call" from W9IXV who let me know that 20 mtrs had opened again very late in the day, and 2x599 signals with Allan, HC2AD.

The bands were a little noisy and signals were weak but a whole lot better then the last sprint.. It seemed like the participation was up for the whole sprint. Good job guys.

I did quite a bit better on my second WES than on my first attempt. It was great to hear the bands filled with straight key CW signals! Thanks again to everyone for an enjoyable WES.

AD5VC Operated by: Dana

A very enjoyable WES. It seemed like this was the largest turnout, particularly for DX. Chasing them made it very different than previous ones. Even 10m and 15m opened up for a while.

K6FFY Operated by: Nick

The fast changing band conditions at my location made this Sprint very challenging.

VE5SMC Operated by: Sean

This was the first WES I tried from the new QTH with a new antenna, and I was quite pleased with the results. I only had about 2 hours to sprint, but in that time I managed to beat my previous best. Can't wait to give the new antenna a more thorough workout. Maybe next month.

KC9HGW Operated by: Bob

RTTY QRM wiped out the KY QSO Party on 40M, but there were plenty of open frequencies for the WES. This was a lot of QSOs for me. Had a great time and added a lot of new SKCC numbers to the log. Logging Allan HC2AD from Ecuador was a nice ending for my participation. 2 DXCC and 33 non-C/T members.

Was only able to work the last 2 hours but found a lot of contacts on 20 and 40. I always enjoy our sprints.

Raked leaves all day Saturday so the I could get some time on Sunday to operate. Great WES-Special thanks to G0RDO and HC2AD for providing some DX at this end and KL8DX for taking the time to pull me out of a pile-up...the thrill from each of those contacts left me a bit shaky...so thanks to the ops on subsequent contacts for the patience while I got my fist back on track. Looking forward to the next SKS and WES.

Well of course it was fun! But this time I got to operate more than usual! Stayed up all night, got a nice nap and back at it again! It's amazing how much better you do when you are on longer LOL.Big Signal from all but Fred KB8OVK was peaking 50 over at times! Great to hear all the DX friends. Bands are slowly getting better. It was a treat to work the UK guys. Good to get Walt and Allan back in my log too, missed them the last couple times. Use my little Russian Spy key and my Mac bug the entire time, couldn't bring a lot of spare keys to the Ball Field. It was a Minor's Field in the 40's and has been abandoned. The announcer's tower is still there and a favorite portable site of mine. Food, Fire, Shelter and Radio...gotta love it!
Now, who wins the Key?

This was my 1st WES although I've participated in the shorter sprints. I was able to work 8 other members (who like me) had no T or C after their number. It was fun giving out 10 point QSOs. I finally found Andy (K9SKC) in the 7.1 area of 40m. My Nye Viking Master Key was used throughout the WES. Many thanks for the sponsorship of this operating event.

Phenominal conditions and great turnout. Bands seemed filled with SK signals. Finished work on better ground for my indoor dipole before WES which really seemed to help. Great to catch G0RDO and G4LMW early Sunday (local time). Worked 3 AR and one MS, but didn't hear any of the VT stations that had planned to operate. Had one strange run where I worked 5 different stations in a row, all named "John". Rough conditions on 40 mtrs with RTTY competition, but didn't find too many SKCC venturing above 7.100 to escape. Many, many new SKCC members that I'd not worked before... wonderful turnout.

What a nice, mellow contest. Very enjoyable. A nice little break between the 2 hectic weekends of ARRL SS. I was really surprised when John, VK4TJ, answered my CQ on 40. It was also really nice to work Phil, KL8DX and John, K4BAI in GA. 73's to all. Bert, K6CSL

Checking the event log, I was surprised to find that K4ZGB was my first contact (40 mtrs) as well as my last (15 mtrs). Hmmm, how did we manage that?

This was my first opportunity to really try out a recently acquired Hi-Mound HK-706 w/navy knob; smooth enough to be a keeper.

Really appreciated the pace of this event as well as the skill of the participants. Looking forward to next month already.

Much to my surprise, Sunday was going to be "the day". I was in the shack patiently waiting for the bands to open (kinda like waiting for the UPS truck after you ordered a new radio) and my wish was granted around 1730z. I started to hear the west coast and it got better from there! Soon I was able to work stations bordering the Atlantic. I was even more surprised to find out a handful were running some pretty low power!

Furthest DX worked was Walt LW3EX, John VK4TJ, and Nao JO3HPM. A big thanks to John, VK4TJ, for sticking in there. John broke through the corner of my beam, which is not easy. Now that we have south and north Pacific in our contests, I need to begin rolling my beam around "the other way". Never did hook up with any of our EU group but with the AU activity, I did not expect that anyway.

Each QSO was memorable but the highlight was working AL7GS/6 operating bike mobile! I had about a 15 minute QSO with Howard, who was running QRP. He and Barb were out enjoying the 69 degree temperature.

Thanks to everyone for my best WES yet and hanging in there. We had 30mph + wind gusts so my QRN level was much higher than normal. My new Navy Flameproof had it's maiden voyage and thanks to those in the group for pointing me to Bunnell. A special thanks to all those that made this contest possible and especially those who got on and operated. If you didn't, you sure missed a great time!

What a blast. The XYL looked at me cross-eyed most of the weekend because the WES followed the ARRL CW SS. She asked if this was going to happen every weekend?

I assured her that what happens in WES stays in WES. She wasn't reassured.

There were quite a few highlights:

- Started off with AK! Phil's equipment did all the work, no doubt. However,

- Got my first QRP QSO! Thanks for not giving up and moving on, Tim. Working through two attics made for some major ear strain, but it was worth it: PA to TX with 5 attenuated cool-bean Watts.

- Worked hard to get K9SKC twice. Worked through filtered AM hash on 40M by using notch filtering and IF shift. Thanks for making all the housecalls Andy.

- Got my first XE. Thanks Oscar. Pretty sure your set up is nice too.

- Finally linked up with K8JD. We've tried many times and this time it clicked. 20M wasn't so-so on my end John - you were booming. Thanks for showing me how to get through a pileup; I couldn't make out any of the callsigns even after AGN. The trick (for this one) was to wait until the hullaballoo is over by a split sec.

- Met many SKCC'ers on the radio that I've never seen on the K3UK sked page. Most of them impressive on the key w.r.t. accuracy.

- Afterward, QSO'd with an impressive young man who is getting a great start in the hobby.

With somewhat better equipment and sunspots on the way I hope to QSO with our GB, EU, & JA SKCC'ers soon.

Thanks once again to management!
Neil, KE5WIQ

Only about 5 hours operating time (3.5 on Saturday night and the last 1.5 hours of the sprint on Sunday PM). DX worked (all on 20 meters): ZL2SWR / ZL2BLQ (thanks, Stan) and LW3EX (thanks, Walt). Great to hear plenty of non-C and T stations (worked 30 of them).

Conditions seemed generally good, and most signals were easy to copy. The K3 receiver helped save a few, though. Equipment used: K3, Skillman HSK, Vibroplex SK, Vibroplex Anniversary, TH6, 40-2CD, and 80 m inverted V.

QSOs were on 20, 40, and 80. Checked 7100 + a few times, but but only one QSO there. Many digital-mode stations around 7050 was very annoying. It seems 40 CW is being taken over more and more by digital "stuff." :(

Thanks for the QSOs. 73, Gary

This is my first SKCC submission & I hope I got it correct. 63 Q's in 26 states including one DX (VK). 39 non-C/T Q's. I figured the bonus at 39x10=390 plus 10 for the VK. So I came up with 63 Q's, SPC=27 and bonus=400. Final score=12501

It was a great SKCC event and I almost made it to 100 for the century deal. I got to 99 - one dupe short! I'll get it soon enough. 73, Don W7GB

I had another great time. I was not able to spend much time in the Sprint, but did make a few Q's. I was pleased to work into Japan and Argentina.

My thanks to Bill (NT9K) for covering this sprint.

I did manage a few QSOs at the start of the sprint and even got in a few during
during our local club's special event station celebrating Radio Central Day.
I'm sure I raised the eyebrows of some SKCC members when I came back with W2RC
and K2RFP. And I bet Ron (K9DTH) was doubly confused when Jerry (K2PAY) worked
him moments after I did and also mentioned W2RC. Also on the key for a few QSOs
was Neil (KC2KY).

Below is a photo of the shack originally built for and used by Marconi that
serves as our club's base of operations for special events.

Icom 706MKIIg @50 Watts to Home Brew Vertical. Got a new key a couple of weeks ago ... ChiCom Army K5 ..... makes my J-37 look almost dainty! Did a little fine-tuning on the coil spring with the Vice Grips and it's actually fairly smooth now. However, I have to be careful not to drop it on my foot.

11 Qs on 40m and 5 Qs on 80M. Usual considerate and polite RTTY stations blasting away on 40M in the 7 mHz portion, QRN on 7.1 portion but useable. Having the extra "band" is great ..... it provides refuge from RTTY and foreign SSB.

Nice WES event and 15m was open, too.

Heard a lot of new calls..good to see more operators on the air. Worked my first SKCC in AK this time. I think I did ok for only one and a half hours to participate !

K1ULF Operated by: Ulf

Been off the air since August when I last went camping. I finally took the time to fix my Softrock and the soundcard so that I can get back on the air. It was very enjoyable and I saw a lot of new calls on the sked so the T should not be all that far away.

Glad to be back,

Ulf

This is more like it! Lots of signals this time. 80m was fine-- got over half my contacts there alone. Was hoping for more 20m action but I had to quit early Sun afternoon. Sri, Tim K3XS, I was a little distracted and couldn't remember if I was the CQer or you were, so sent info again, haha! Heard two SKCC DX but they couldn't hear me. No K9SKC here either, but got 35 non-C/Ts. My rig: Elecraft K3 @ 12 watts; 100-ft wire up 30-ft; Junker straight key.

Corrected Submittal. I didn't add bonus for the four DXCC countries worked. Of the 58 QSOs 39 were with Centurions and Tribunes. 17 were with members not yet Centurion and 2 were with non members. I attribute this to the possibility of earning Centurion in a single WES so that members who participate in a few WES will soon earn the award.

First, a slight apology. I just got my C but had total brain fade on my first few QSOs and put a T on the end of my number. Doh! For those who congratulated me, thanks in advance, I’ll get there. This WES got me pretty close.

Second, this sprint was a good chance to really try out my new 200 foot ladder-line fed doublet. Seems to be working, and I had a couple of QSOs on 160 M., a first for me. Most were spread among 80, 40 and 20. Heard K9SKC faintly on 20 M but was unable to work him.

All in all, another fun event. I like the idea of changing the scoring emphasis from WES to WES. Like tight underwear, it keeps you on your toes!

Great WES with the most participation I've heard. It should be like this all the time!

I was only able to operate for 2 hours Saturday night but had a great time. I worked enough new guys to boost my total SKCC count from 89 to 105, qualifying me for Centurion status. Whoo hoo!

73 and thanks to all for making it another fun event.

Just 4 days before the Sprint, my right hand was crushed at work by a 50 pound roller flying out of a hydralic press. Five x-rays showed no broken bones, but I was left with quite a swollen club for a hand. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the sprint very much. My thanks to all involved for such a splendid time.

It has been more than a year since I participated in a SKCC Weekend Sprintathon. As usual, it was a lot of fun. I only worked about 3 hours, mostly on 20M and 40M with a few on 80M. I am a collector and am trying to make at least several Qs with each key. This time I used 6 of them for the first time.
