I really enjoy the weekend format. Even though I can't be on the air all day, it is great to be able to jump in and work for a couple of hours. There were plenty of members on the air this time and 20m seemed like the hot band. It was fun as always and I look forward to next time!

W4FOA Operated by: Tony

Found the bands to be in very good shape. Many loud signals from the left coast on both 20 and 40 meters. Worked quite a number of "non SKCC members" so hopefully they will look into joining our ranks. Thanks to Bill, NT9K for all of the work he has put into making our club a fun experience. Best of luck Bill!! God Bless.

Fun weekend with interesting band condx. Also worked the FISTS Fall Sprint using this call with Carl WB0CFF. Had a great time in both sprints, not much time for this one but wanted to put WB0RMK in the logs. Thanks to George using N3A/2 for the 25 bonus point....73 all de Kieth wi0s/WB0RMK

Great WES! I worked this event from my home away from home in Virginia. Made lots of contacts with “search and pounce” Even got 3 DX stations (1 non member), Argentina-Walt 3 bands, UK-John G0RDO, and France-F8DKG! The bands were in great shape here in VA. I worked 10,15,20,40 (both) and 80 meter bands.
Station: iCOM 7000 at 100 watts interfaced with my laptop, DM-330MV PS, and an AT-7000 tuner. The antenna was my version of the Mystery Antenna – aprox. 100 feet long at about 40-45 feet in the air running N/S. Logged the contacts via the Sprint Logger Program.
The home brew key held up fine although my fist was ruff at times, it took a little getting use to since it sits higher than my normal key. The key was made of all brass and cedar construction. Base, lever and knob were hand made from a cedar tree my father cut down from his property in VA. The lever was made from part of a slide lock for a door and the cedar was shaped to fit. The supporting arms are a couple of brass drawer pulls. The contact posts are made from a fancy brass door hinge pin. The spring was cut from a strip of brass and hand shaped. The contact is just a section of brass rod cut to length. Wires are soldered and run under the base from the spring and contact to the contact post in the rear.
Had fun making, as well as using, this key!

My personal best WES in number of QSOs and points scored desite band conditions. Signals on 20m were relatively few and mostly weak. 40m was not too bad Saturday evening, racked up 21 QSOs. I even found the lower part of the band crawling with ZLs and VKs in the Oceania contest. There were also a few JAs. But no one was able to copy my calls. Picked up 2 new states and 12 numbers towards my Tribune! Goal for Nov WES -> 1000pts.

Ugh! Conditions were so difficult on both 40 and 20. DEEP QSB fades... W7JI started at 20 over then faded into the void at the end (but I did copy the info!) Still ... what a fun "contest".

A pretty good sprint - 20 meters was dead Saturday night but opened up nicely on Sunday - sounded like there was a good turn out from the QRM level. Nice job Bill.

In the so-so conditions I heard many stations who couldn't hear me. Bummer! (That's the downside of the Elecraft K2's sensitive receiver.) K9SKC didn't hear me but N3A/2 did. :-) I might have even reached my Tribune.

Also, I'm proud to say there was no computer in the shack, no sked page, etc. Just spun the dial and pounded brass.

It took me longer to type my score in than it did for Bill NT9K to post the other scores..one minute after WES, score was posted!!! Amazing!! Bands were strange this time but plenty of fun to be had. 80 was alive, 20 was pretty good and 40 was dead in NC. One 15 meter contact, thanks Dave, WA1AR. Bert,W5ZR and Ron,AC2C were both big signals this time..40 over!! weakest signal was still 559. Bruce, WB8OGK had a 579 with one watt!! Great time and I can't wait to see the keys on photo.. Despite a geomagnetic storm, I thought the bands held up pretty well. Worked Walt LW3EX on 10,15,20, Phil KL8DX on 20m. Even heard, but could not work, a couple of UK stations. At least a half dozen of the contacts were with new members. Equipment was a TS180s at 60W to a homebrew vertical.

Finally got an antenna up on 80 Meters. Not great, but got 3 QSOs. Had to wind the transmitter up to 100 Watts to get those 3.

Only need 41 more contacts to qualify for Centurion.

Another fun sprint! Alas, my craftsman entry was a bust due to some last minute engineering miscalculations. All I ended up with was a really nice knob and skirt. Very comfy, and I put them on my Navy Flameproof - much bigger overall and the skirt has a curved surface.

I ended up using my new toy, a NATO Key. Have mercy! That thing is a monster. And it clatters like a railroad telegraph sounder when you pound on it. But I like it, it suits my sending style. Arm off the table, and whang away with reckless abandon. But what lunatic thought this thing up?

Tough conditions for much of the WES, but everybody did what they could and things picked up at the end. Maybe this is the last of the spotless sprints. (an A index of 37 was no help either)

Congrats to all the hard fighting sprinters who stuck it out. This was one to remember.

Wow! Great WES. Could only work the last 4 hours, but enjoyed it thoroughly. Lots of activity on 20M & 40M, worked Walt, LW3EX on 15M, but heard no other sigs. I used the key I made for the last Junk Box Sprint, now sporting a Nye Navy style knob. Just tightened the trunnion lock nut slightly, set the spacing at the the thickness of a 20 wt sheet of paper and we were good to go for the WES.

I think Bill may have his 100 submissions after this one. Thanks to all who participated.

This is the first sprint that I have worked. I normally don't do contests so, I'm not sure I understand a couple of the questions above. Is QSO Points the total number of stations worked regardless of band? The "per band" part is a little confusing since it's not split out according to band. The rules state "One multiplier for each SPC worked per Sprint". Is that each "different" SPC per Sprint? In other words, if I worked 10 Ohio's, would I count it once or ten times? I assumed once and that's what I entered above.

This month was much better than last month. It is hard to make a good showing with no antennas. I didn't have AC power either, but I did have a generator and a battery that I could have used. I did get my 80 vertical/160 L back up for this WES and managed quite a few contacts on 20 and 40 with it. Even worked Walt in Argentina on 15 and KI2X on 80.

Ike severely damaged my SteppIR and knocked down my dipoles and Carolina Windom. I finally have the broken tree limbs out of the way so that I can start repairing the antennas. K5EWJ will be back in shape in a few months.

This was my first WES, and I had a lot of fun! The bands weren't the best this weekend but I still managed to get a handful of QSOs with casual operation. SKCC members have very good SK fists!

NE7D Operated by: Rock

Always fun when I get a chance to spend some time in the WES. I appologize to the stations calling me that I could just not pull out of the noise. I lost my Spiderbeam on an expedition to a mountaintop in northern CA last weekend for the CA QSO Party -- got demolished by gale force winds. Had to depend on my OCF 80M dipole this weekend. Pretty good condx on 40M; not so hot on 20M, but managed to work plenty of SKCC members all over the US on both bands. I think I even recruited a couple of new members. Tnx for the Q's, everyone!

Good to hear so many brass pounders out there.

Thanks to all that I worked.

My thanks Bill

Managed to find more time for this one. Very enjoyable.

The posts kept snapping off my Lego Cootie so only actually used it for one QSO! The rest on my Kent paddles set as a Swiper.

Most stations are (not surprisingly) not looking for stations outside NA so often hard to get a QSO. Would struggle without the use of Andy's (K3UK) sked pages.

"DX" theme (10 point bonus outside NA?) for the next one?

Now dismantled and part of a helicopter!

My key for this event was a kind of last minute slap-together
after my initial design turned out to be a disaster. I built it on
the last day and got it done about an hour before showtime.

I was going to use a Radio Shack gift card but I found I still
had enough money on it to buy a 1/2 watt resistor so I put
that back in the drawer and used an old, used-up Best Buy gift card.
It turns out the cut off corners of that card is a good thing
in that it keeps my fat fingers clear of the motion.

The action was a bit too easy to begin with but I found with an
extra block under the card it stiffened it up nicely and it feels
very much like my other straight keys. I'm pleased with it.

My key built on Mrs. Nussbaum's gift card.

It was a blast. Betcha it will be even more fun when I read the rules next time! I was getting up the gumption to get on the air and make one contact. Next thing I knew, a whole lotta' SKCC folks were on the air and I was QSO'ing for the first time.

As a bonus, once I figured out what was going on, the simple exchange format allowed me to jump in without worrying about missing too much. Wahoo.

After it was said and done the bands looked like ghost towns. I found a FISTS member and rag-chewed for a while. What a great start.

Thanks a bunch to Cookie for a whole lot of advice that I'm still chewing on. Getting some metal high in the air without raising the attention of the HOA nazis is job #1 for this hobbyist. Part of the fun is dealing with the limitations and seeing what you can accomplish anyway. One day I'll set up a tower... until then it'll be a new vertical. I'll keep the attic fan dipole for NVIS. The QSO map is filling up.

And many thanks to everyone I got to work. Some were even patient enough to put up with the unnecessary info I was sending them! I'll read the rules for the next one, I promise.
