I just completed construction of my mew Sprint 3B QRP rig and was trying it out on 40m when I ran across all the activity above 7.100. I haven't looked at the web site lately, so had no idea that this was happening. It was pretty exciting to me, what with the new rig and all the stations in the old novice band. It was great to hear so many stations operating in this under utilized slice of CW spectrum. Nice slow ops too. I only had a short time on the air, but I had a blast! I hope that SKCC continues to make use of 7.100 and up.

Bart, N9AKF

This was my first SKCC Sprint. Thanks to the great SKCC operators for pulling in my QRP signal. I operated 40 meters only and had a great time listening to all of the signals on the Novice Band. I had not heard that many non-shortwave broadcast signals in years. Thanks again for the great event. Rich NØEAX

Man, that was fun! Lots of rough and tumble in the "upper" 40 section on the first night and into the morning of the next day, then 20 and 15 opened up. I got to try out my new Moxon antenna for 20, and it seemed to do OK. Having the upper part of 40 open as a distinct area worked well, but maybe next time bonus points can be left off so everyone spreads out instead of concentrating there. It's also a bit unfair to our DX members if the bands aren't cooperating. Lots of QRN and QRM, but lots of QSOs too. I got knocked off the air with thunderstorms about 6 hours before the finish. Looking forward to the next one already!

I haven't done many sprints but i had some time so i thought id give it a try. some horrible cdx and a few times had to QRT fer WX and other reasons. Mostly Ts this time, i wish there were more newbies.

I don't think we need to make the 40m change permanent, we're a club to promote CW, not 40m utilization, but I think it would be great to toss it in as a bonus now and then.

K1ULF Operated by: Ulf

I was camping over the week and it wes a great surprice to turn on the SKED on the iPhone and find tons of people on the air. The days leading up only gave a few QSO'n each night but I was able to get 11 during the hours I operated.

The rig is a Small Wonder Lab SW 40+, In the altoids box is a 5W PA (Miniboot based), the tuner is a dead bug built BLT.

I used a 51ft wire strung to a tree as antenna. The Key was my trusty Swedish pump key.

Packed up ready to go...

WA6L Operated by: John

I only had a couple of hours to operate, but I had a great time running QRP. Some stations that were 599 never heard me, and others that were just above the noise level heard me FB. Rig was KX1 running about 2-1/2 watts. Key was Vibroplex Presentation. Conditions were just so-so and I never had any luck on 40m. I look forward to next month. 73, John.

mY VERY FIRST WEEKEND SPRINT. i BUSTED OUT THE VIBROPLEX BUG ON THIS ONE. FOR THOSE I WORKED,TNX FER PUTTING UP WITH MY POOR FIST :-)

K4ZGB Operated by: Tom

Maybe this special 40 meter event should be once a year.

AB1BW Operated by: George

Dispite the high noise level and the qrm on 20 meters it was still a great sprint. It was nice to see all of 40 meters being used. If we don't use it we will lose it like we did the rest of the band. I had some action on 15 but nothing on 10 meters. This is my last sprint for a while as I go into the hospital for some surgery the week after next. When you hear a slow, shaky cq please give me a call because I'll need plenty of practice getting my fist back. You're a great group--keep pounding the brass and long live CW. 73 to all, George, AB1BW, 2468T

K6JF Operated by: Jim

20m was abysmal, few and very weak sigs. Once again 40m saved the day. Although I beat my highest WES QSO total, my total score was lower. Most QSOs were in WA-OR-CA-AZ-MT. Biggest surprise was working VT on the 'new' band. I have only worked VT once to complete my WAS back in '72. Also picked up NC for my SKCC state total. Did not hear the usual midwest crowd! CU in the next Weekday Sprint!

Thanks for another great event with noisy bands...73, Ci

Lots of activity on the upper 40. 20 was also very good. Lots of fun. Tnx es 73 to all. Leo

N6EV Operated by: Paul

Never heard club call. Lots of spread on the bands from 10 through 40 this time around. Personal best in Qs, SPCs, Ts and C's.

Added 10 more C/T's to my list. Special thanks to WA1LWS who was my 50th C/T! So I get to submit for Tribune now!

I suggest we add 6 meters to the available bands. There was a great opening on the band, but couldn't take advantage of it.

Fun as always! See you next time.. with a T instead of a C!
N6EV Paul #3358C 'good to the last dit'!

Seems like paticipation was up a bit. Most C's I've ever logged. Tnx all for a fun sprint!

Liked the new "spice" working above 7.1 MHz. Worked pretty well for me in the beginning and at the end. Nice to work a few people on 10 and 15m. K3 @ 120w, vertical, and regular logging program (N3FJP).

KA2BSK Operated by: Eric

Only was able to put in a few hours just on 40M, but a great weekend sprint. Seemed like lots of activity and participation. Kudos to whoever came up with the idea of utilizing the upper portion of 40M. Great idea and heavy utilization of the high end of 40M. Sorry to all those who I couldn't copy. Thunderstorms were rolling thru and the QRM was heavy. 73's, Eric.

K5ENA Operated by: John

All my 40M contact were 7.110 or above. Reminiscent of my Novice days in the 60's. 20M was great last night. AC2AD was strongest I have heard him. Also worked Cookie on 20M, neighboring state, which is rare.

LW3EX Operated by: Walt

First three hours were pretty good, then... a lottery, very short openings with quick shifting conditions.

Bands worked 20, 15 and 10m, ant Mosley TA33.
Stn worked on two bands, K4CNW Jack, K5EWJ Cookie and KA2FIR Mike.
One worked on the three, NT9K Bill.
Strongest signal heard KL8DX Phil, on 20m he was 599 plus.

An early Swedish telegraph key used, yes! it's very old, but still working like silk.
It was another nice Sprint. Thanks all 73, Walt - ..-

Great sprint. Highest QSO count so far. New 40M helped get around fast start then hearing the same calls the rest of the way. Used 40,40+,20 and 15. Only QSO on 80 was K8JD.
Since I was not going to use 10M, on the logger I used 10M band as a way to remember lower 40 from upper 40.

CUL Alan

Lots of good activity, especially with the "new" band slot.
That band provided my most q's. Worked 7.05, 7.1, 3.5, 14.05 and 21.05 areas. A lot of the eastern U.S. had t'storms, and with the fones on, the crashes were resonating through the big void between the cans like explosions!
Glad to work several newer members. Good job Bill on setting it up like that!

It was a lot of fun "re-colonizing" the band segment above 7.100 MHz. Lots of elbow room to operate. It also makes sense from a spectrum "lose it or use it" standpoint. On the other hand, it lowers the SKCC profile to non-members since few people tune that high and wound not hear the hustle and bustle of our Sprints - and perhaps wonder what we were all about. IE; 7.055 is more "visible".

Fixing up the kitchen took priority but hoped for better than 1 (ONE) QSO !! but at least it was a Tribune - tnx Hans (WA1LWS)

Better next time!

Had fun....was a great time....only had limited time as had family obligations.

AC2C Operated by: Ron

I wish I'd had more time to dedicate to the WES.

The 40M band bonus worked well.

KC6ZZT Operated by: Joe

Had very little time to work WES, make very few contacts, but glad to be on the air. Interesting to work the "Upper 40" (above 7.110). Good to get up in the bands sometimes.

VK4TJ Operated by: John

Pretty rough conditions - elevated A & K indices. Plenty heard me, most even got my call right, but busted one or more parts of the exchange.

Wow, that was rough! Kinda like playing 18 holes of golf with an inch of water on the golf course. But, if they all were easy with perfect propagation, not sure it would be as much fun.

Bands were horrible. Only heard stations on 20 and a few on 40 meters. I have a small window of time that I can operate above 7100 but the foreign broadcast stations just wipe out that part of the spectrum. I even get foreign speaking SSB on 7050 that can be S7. The photo is of my PRO centered on 7100 and you can see the signals I get from that frequency on up. I did manage some nice QSO's on 40 both above and below 7100 before the broadcasts got too strong.

I know I missed a few and sorry to those I missed, especially N7JB. The band had so much heavy QSB stations would be gone as quick as they would come back to my CQ. It was great to work Steve, KN6Y! I was using the Sprint Logger and nothing came up when I typed in his call. Imagine my surprise when he sent along his SKCC #. Welcome and thanks for the QSO, Steve!

All in all, lots of fun as always! I hope to have my Navy Flameproof working by the next contest. Thanks to all those that make this and all the other SKCC contests possible. 1 contact or 50, it's always a blast!

K0LUW Operated by: Russ Halbert

A different kind of sprint with the upper 40m band counting extra. Made 75 contacts in the 7.100 to 7.125 range and another 30 on the lower end. The balance were on 20m. Band conditions were poor with the A index up a 19. Had a lot of fun.

K6FFY Operated by: Nick

Although some horrible conditions at times, this was good practice for working contests and understanding propagation.
Thanks to all.

WI0S Operated by: Kieth

The spectrum above 7.100 isn't new by any stretch. We need to populate it as much as possible with CW signals. 90 percent of my 40 meter operating is in those 25 kc and I was glad to see all the activity there. We can't forget what happened to 3.600 to 3.725 segment on 80 meters. Lets use it so we don't lose it!! CW 4 EVER. Kieth

W4FOA Operated by: Tony

Lots of fun! Congrats to all. It is extremely impressive at how the "skill" level is increasing, thanks to the WES events.
Very few repeats necessary! Keep up the good work gang!
I love the idea of operating above 7.100. Did you notice how nice it is to not have contest or net QRM? Just SKCC activity.
By all means, lets keep this new area of activity going.

Tony, W4FOA

KB4QQJ Operated by: Randy Drake

I had a great time operating QRPp. It's a little harder than QRP. Since every time I picked a frequency and made a contact another station would QRL? I would answer Y and they had no Idea I was there hi hi It happens and doesn't phase me. It's all a part of the fun. Strongest station was
W0IS at 30 over, Dick, K2rfp was 20 over. Great conditions.
The old novice band must have given a sigh of relief after this weekend!! It was fun and hope we do it more often.

K8KFJ Operated by: Gary

I enjoyed the Qs on the new band. Not sure I even heard any strong SWBC sigs there during my operating time. I guess the verdict is still out as to whether the new band made a big impact on the normal amount of QSOs in the 7055 area. The one time I went there, it sounded like a ghost town. 73, Gary -K8KFJ- West Virginia #2444

Well, here we are at the bottom of the sunspot cycle, and I work LW3EX, HC2AD, ZL2BLQ/ZL2SWR, and KL6DX. 10 and 15 provided some contacts, but the bulk of them came from 20m. 40m was not as good for me because of my antenna, but still it was a lot of fun, especially trying out the region above 7100. 8 contacts above 7100, even with the QRM; it's amazing what a good receiver and outboard audio filter will do. Thanks for all who listened, and I heard many good fists.

KG4BYN Operated by: Ben

for the little time i had to work (my 2nd wes - too many weekend distractions), it was fun, even though rough conditios at my qth...coupled with an antenna issue on 15m w/the trusty k1. therefore, i have not YET beat my all-time weekend record of 1 contact. well, there's always next month! thanks for the fun!

KJ4WD Operated by: Carl

Enjoyed my first SKCC Weekend Sprint. During the time I was operating, the lack of 40-15 meter band openings kept my signal in the eastern half of the country but made it interesting all the same. 73 from #4084

Fun event. I would have spent more time Sunday afternoon, but most of the afternoon was comprised of T-Boomers and power outages. hi hi

KG4W Operated by: Ed

Started Sun am, had qsos on all bands except 160 & 80. Worked 40 mtrs the most.

AF2Z Operated by: Drew

This was a great one for me even though thunderstorms ruined most of Sunday. I started on 20m but it was pretty sparse. Though Allan HC2AD
had a great signal there! Also heard Walt LW3EX once again but still no QSO. Got a few on 80m; nil on 15 and 10. 40m was very active,
including a few West Coasters: Paul NG7Z, Dennis W6UT and Paul N6EV-- tnx for the effort you guys!

As for my 40m QSO breakdown: it was a 60/40 split favoring the upper portion; ten stations (aprox 25 percent) were worked in both portions
(vs. my guestimate of five or six).

My rig: Elecraft K3 @ 12 watts; 100' wire up 30'; Junker straight key.

VE5SMC Operated by: Sean

This was my second WES and it went a lot better than the first. I managed to make more contacts in one day than I had to date with CW, so I'm pretty pleased about that. Unlike last time, 40m was hot on Saturday night, but 20m was almost dead all day Sunday. I only managed a couple of QSOs on 20, and 15-10 were completely silent. Still, I had a great time and am looking forward to the next event.

K5EWJ Operated by: Cookie

I made a total of 43 contacts on 40 meters, 27 above 7.1 and 16 below 7.1. Only 5 stations were worked on both sub-bands. It seems to me that very few stations worked both above and below 7.1. Interesting also was that I saw more activity above 7.1 than below.

A nice opening on 15 meters is a bit unusual. My band count was 43 on 40 meters, 43 on 20 meters, 25 on 15 meters and 3 on 10 meters.

It was a fun WES. Conditions were fairly good on the upper bands. I did not try 80 or 160 meters.

I had to squeeze WES in this weekend with little time to spare. However, it was great fun.

This was a fun sprint. I heard lots of great fists.
Cookie had the biggest signal, even on 10 meters.
When was the last time you saw S9+20 on 10 meters?
Nice to see 10 and 15 open for the sprint.

I enjoyed the new scoring band and worked 17 qso's in that part of the band.
Lots of DX this time too, and I was glad to see more beginners joining in.
Special thanks to Bob KC9GMN for operating as K9SKC and and for 2 bands.

Equipment: Kenwood TS-870 with 100w into a 40 meter inverted vee up 50 ft at the apex.
My beam is a Cushcraft MA5B and my key was a vibroplex Annie.

This was my first SKCC Sprint. Enjoyed meeting everyone for the first time. Had fun working K5EWJ - Cookie on 4 Bands. Was very nice to see 15m open, gave us a break from the QRM on 20m. Had t-storms here Sunday afternoon, had to shut down for awhile. Looking forward to the next Sprint. Thanks guys!

K4CNW Operated by: Jack

What a great weekend of fun! Although 20 and 15 were open, propagation favored the East Coast and the Far West from here in SC. That left a big hole in the Midwest and West that resulted in lots of missing states/multipliers. 7100+ was fun both during the day and even while dodging the broadcasters at night. I think this drill proves that this portion of 40 meters is usable 24 hrs a day and that as SKCC members we should make an effort to use that band segment on a regular basis. Thanks to all for making this event so enjoyable and a special thanks to Bill, NT9K, for going to the trouble to set up a “2nd 40 meter band”.
