SKCC Weekend Sprint Results

February 10th Theme: The 2nd Annual KJ7BS Junkbox Warz

Weekend Sprintathon Sunday February 10th, 0000-2359z

It has two components, a non-operating component as well as an on-air component. Duration is 48 hours.

The event actually begins at 0000z Saturday February 9th, at which time participants begin building a manual or semi-automatic keying device, according to SKCC definition, from items in their "junkbox". No materials may be purchased for this event and all construction must be done using hand tools, no power tools of any kind are permitted. The use of a soldering iron IS allowed.

Participants may begin operating, for score, at 0000z Sunday for 24 hours, until 2359z Sunday. During this time, all normal weekend sprint rules apply. If you use your junkbox key, send your skcc number followed by JB. For example: Bill FL nr 1926T JB k - this will allow others to vote for the best JunkBox fist.

If you choose not to build a key, you can still participate in the sprint as normal. Nobody will be excluded! A picture of the junkbox key should be emailed to me separate from your entry submission. I prefer 480x360 gif or jpg format photos, please. We also want you to vote for the best "Junkbox Fist" in your soapbox comments.

Soapbox
K2RFP My first idea for a junkbox key was too complicated so I decided not to build it. My second idea turned out to be not so original so I didn't build that key either. I settled on building my landing gear key.

I found the landing gear a few days ago. It was attached to part of a wing I found while hiking in a wooded area adjacent to an RC airplane flying field. I have it adjusted so it feels pretty much the same as all my other homebrew keys. It works fine but I can't go very fast with it because of the heavy wheel.

N3RIK Worked n1afv (3367c, jb) and k5ewj (4077, jb)

AC2C Great Fun. Sure wish I'd had more time to devote to the event.

K7JSW Another first for me! I threw together a straight key from the junk box. Really just a piece of wood with a copper strip screwed to it. Just like one I made as a kid so many years ago. Took some getting use, but loads of fun. Hard to pick the best fist. Everyone sounded great!

N2QFD We had a good snow in the Adirondacks and I lost track of the time while out skiing, only working Cookie in TX on a JB with a JB key before the sprint ended. So, I could not tell it was a JB key so my vote goes to K5EWJ- Cookie SK#4077. My Key was made from a paper clip. 73's and always fun.

W6UT I didn't build a key and therefore didn't call CQ except on 15M for one contact. I did work a number of JB Keys. Am sure everyone had a grand time. I did S&P for contacts. Qs on 80/40/20/15.

KC2EGL I sat down at my table forgetting that this was the WES weekend. I was expecting to work some of the LA, NH, and NNY QSO parties. But instead I worked our WES. This was my first attempt at working a SKCC event operating QRP. I had some very encouraging RST's. I can not wait to operate one of our events with my new K2 which should be here in about 5 weeks. Thanks to all who came back to my CQ. This QRP stuff has me hooked. The only QRO I will be doing will be checking into the area ARES/RACES nets on HF and FM.

K1ULF 3 of the QSO's was with about 80W with 617C, 2166T and the only non member ( he used a Bencher straight key). Rest of them was with 5W or less. 10 of them was with a Softrock homebrew SDR and the Curiously Strong Altoids Linear Legal Limit 5W amplifier. Tuner is homebrew using polyvaricon and a variable toroid inductor. Antenna is NVIS 80m dipole.

My JB Key was made from a piece of baseboard with a 24V relay mounted on top. I used some PCB material to stiffen the fingers and I added two carbon fiber strips as arm. The knob was a flat wood piece.

KA2BSK Stumbled upon the weekend sprint by accident and ended up operating more than 12 hours. Unfortunately not able to make a junk box key, but used my old brass railroad key. Only made one (1) 15M contact, but it was LW3EX in Argentina. Looking forward to the next one and may operate QRP. 73's, Eric KA2BSK

K5EWJ It was a fun contest. All the RTTY signals for the CQ WPX Contest made for busy bands and sometimes it was hard to find a hole. 85 QSOs with a junk box key made for one tired right arm at the end of the event. I used the junk box key for all qsos. My vote goes to Randy, KB4QQJ but it was hard to choose between Randy and Damon, W4HDM. Both were great.

W4HDM Had a Blast! Thanks everyone for a great time doing JunkBox WES. My vote for best fist goes to Cookie in Texas; I would not have known he was JB. Enjoyed all of the contacts and even had a couple first time ever CW ops. I got to try and recruit some new members as well! The wind took out my antenna at the end, but I got it back up (sort of) in time to squeeze in a few more contacts. All of my contacts were made with the JB key!

I made my key from lots of Gorilla Glue, a staple remover, some old washers (to level the remover) a dime for the contact, and some sort of bracket for the adjustment bolt. (The spring was not needed, just for looks, LOL) The arm is made from some heavy copper ground wire and a copper connector glued to the remover. The knob came from a lawnmower lever and the skirt is a washer, held in place by a piece of plastic wrapped around the copper. I added a connector to the back for easy hook up. After doing the adjustments, I had to add the mic boom weight to keep the thing still on the desk! Other than the spring action of the remover being weak on one side, the thing worked better than expected, but I’m glad to be back on the Vibroplex! I can’t wait to see all of the cool keys!

I thought you may enjoy this key. This is the key I made before I realized it had to be made the day before (even though it did not take but a few hours to throw together, LOL.) I did not use it for the Sprint, but it seems to be pretty smooth! (A RCA connector glued into a piece of copper pipe with a stiff brass wire coming up the middle, A rubber foot for looks on the end and the knob is glued to a clear rubber tube. To use it I turn the knob into position and pull the rubber foot out a bit away from the main body). The Cannon Key!

KB4QQJ Best Junkbox Fist was NT9K Bill Strongest Signal was W4HDM at 20 over S9 also fine fist. Special Thanks again to Walt for DX SKCC contact. My junkbox key was made with scrap balsa wood base, worn out hacksaw blade, dead DC molex connector, two rubber bands, one worn out rubber grommet, one paperclip to hold down the dime for contact point, stripped 1/4 x 20 screw and a piece of scrap aluminum from a hole saw cutout. True junkbox...and it shows!!!
Had a great time though. Thanks to all in the log. It was a tuff event on 5 watts with all the RTTY going on. Best 73 de KB4QQJ. Take Care and Have a Happy.

AA9KH John K4BAI, Cookie K5EWJ and Keith KB8FE were all tied for "best" fist in this ham's humble opinion. However (sorry John), I'll have to disqualify K4BAI as both K5EWJ and KB8FE were using junk box keys. The only 2 of the 10 stations I contacted total who used homebrewed junk box keys. Hmmm ... methinks either the bands stunk - and, they DID ! (hi) - or, we need to generate more interest in the 24 hour "sprint". Many thanks to all those who participated. You are all winners. BTW ... where were you hiding? CUL. 73, J

AF2Z Got a late start but there was plenty of activity on Saturday evening to make up for it, all on 80m (except one non-member qso on 160m). Tried 160 several times, but no SKCC there. 20m was the next best band (Sunday) with approx a dozen QSOs. 40 was afflicted with RTTY except for a few QSOs in the morning.

All in all, my best sprint yet; so condx & participation must have been pretty good. (BTW, solar flux index = 74 today.)

Sorry I didn't have a junkbox key this time, but worked 11 guys who did. The best junkbox fists: Bruce WB8OGK and Bill NT9K. Can't wait to see their keys.

My rig: Elecraft K2 running 15 watts to attic dipole & 100' wire; Junker key.

K1NNJ Next month I'm building a key and trying.

KB9YGD tnx wonderfull time es 73 de kb9ygd/Skcc 555

K4BAI TH6DXX, Alpha 78, 1 KW, TH6DXX, dipole, zepp, inverted vee. Time was limited, but enjoyed the time I could put in the contest. Apologies to a few callers who were under my noise level at the moment and I couldn't even copy the call. Hope to QSO them soon. 73, John, K4BAI.

W6SQQ Great Sprint! My vote for best JB key fist goes to Walt, LW3EX, who sent flawless 15-18wpm CW. What happened to the East coast? Never heard anyone east of TN on any band, though I could hear midwest stations working them. Strange propagation. Really enjoyed this one, but had company most of Sunday, and only made 13 contacts. Next time, who knows?
Thanks to all who participated.

K4ZGB Lots of new SKCC numbers worked.
Worked 7 junk boxers all sounded good.
40 meters was a loss with rtty this weekend.

KK6AW I only had two contacts with the JB Key and I was called away all day Sunday. I had fun making my extravigant key and using it. Kelsey KK6AW

K8NB Bands didn't seem real good this weekend, except for all the RTTY on 40. No time to build a key, so used what was on my desk. Had a great time as always.

K4LNN I'm sorry I didn't have time to construct a junkbox key. That would have been fun.

LW3EX I was 10 hours assembling (playing) the "Meccano"JB key, a vintage toy that maybe some of you have known, mixed with old alarm clock wing nut, binding post of a dead Trio 64-RS rcvr, surplus valve socket, lot of bronze pillars to add weight, a borrow navy style knob of other HB key, some wire, spring and solder drops. Result: it works !

Nice Sprint !!! in spite of bad and rare propa. Stormy wx during weekend so QRN all around too. QSO´s: made on 15m and 20m only, running JB all the time Surprise: found G3ZRJ cqng SKS in Sun morning, FB Tony. Congrats: for KB4QQJ with the more powerfull 5W heard agn, WTG Randy. Thanks: to SKCC for promote CW old fashion way, to W6UT Dennis for ur kindness and all of you guys in my logsheet many TNX ! Apologies: to all that answered my CQ and I wasn´t able to copy due noise. JB fist: got four junk pounders, wasn´t an easy election, IMHO vote for Bill NT9K

73, Walt.- LW3EX

K4CNW Had lots of fun but not much time to operate. Worked high in the band Saturday night to dodge the RTTY. 20 was open Sunday afternoon but not much activity. Thought Dick, K2RFP, had the best JB fist.

K4CNW

W1RO Found out about the Junk Box Warz Saturday morning. Raided my junk box with not much luck. Used clip lead connected the ground side of a bug to a political button. No, I'm not sharing as to which political party the button belongs! Used a second clip lead connected to the hot side of the bug. While holding the second (red) lead around the clip I sent CW by touching the clip to the button. Talked to W6SQQ, Al in CA for about 10 minutes. Next time I'll be ready.

NT9K Junkbox Amplidan - I was sick on Saturday and only had an hour to build my key. I used a couple scraps of wood, 2 rubber bands, 3 pennies soldered together and a drywall screw. I used shoe goo to glue the pennies to the base. Performance was much better than I expected, especially at higher speeds. I did have some side to side play which caused me some problems and I thought sure my rubber bands would break or my pennies would come loose. This key uses an upward contact closure motion. One wire attaches to the pennies and the other to the screw.

The sprint was a real challenge with all the RTTY QRM. My vote for the best JunkBox fist goes to Jack K4CNW. Jack took time to stop for a ragchew with me. There were several others that I had noted in my log that had great junkbox fists. I just got to hear more of Jack's key.

It sure was good to hear all the new members participating!
73, Bill NT9K..

KA3CTQ I have been thinking about doing more head copy while improving my speed. But what should I do with the pencil and paper?

Here is a new use for the load of pencils the desk. My son reminded me of the chopsticks he was given at a Japanees restaurant when he was younger. It used the sticks, the paper wrapper, and a rubber band.

W9DLN Best JB Fist: K4CNW

AA2XB I was only able to work the first half hour of the sprint. My very first contact-was that Hawaii I was hearing (KH60Z)Turned out to be George in MT. I did enjoy that half hour.

K1NV I found a QSO above 7.100 MHz., but that was the extent of my 40M activity. Too much teletype garbage in the CW part of the band. The other QSO's were on 80M and it was a tough "go" to make the few that I did. No time to work the activity on Sunday, so am looking forward to the February Weekday Sprint. All the JB keys sounded equally good to me, but I vote for John, K7JSW, in Idaho.

WU7R I couldn't operate for long, but used my Junk Box Key that I made from a hacksaw blade, an eyehook, a piece of plywood and 5 wood screws. It worked well for a tapping style of sending. Lots of fun, I just wish I could have spent more time operation...thanks and 73, Ci

N4RE Sending CW with a pair of needle nose pliers was more difficult than I thought. The alligator clips kept popping off and shorting together.

Best JB fist was W4HDM, Damon in GA.

W9QZ Left my WES log at my QTH in KY, so no points. But I wanted to submit a photo of my Junxbox key anyway.

AD5VC Operated for a total of 3 hours with a junkbox key.
My junkbox key. strip of aluminum, wood screws, short piece of wire, two terminal crimps and the third terminal crimp to be the other contact for the key. Good sending required a different grip with fingers level, sort of slapping the key down.

N5IB Will submit score later, but here's my key... Small scrap of 1/4' cedar, a mrcorswitch, and a wooden game piece.
73,
Jim N5IB
