September 23rd Theme: Straight Key Sunday

Weekend Sprintathon Sunday September 23rd, 0000-2359z

Let's get back to basics this month and let those straight keys sing. If your a dedicated bug user, that's ok too. Use what you want, but the focus this month is on the straight key. Feel free to send a photo of the key you use in the event. I prefer 480x360 jpg or gif images please.

Here's the twist. Last month we slowed down. This time, lets have some fun and speed things up. Just try and send a bit faster than you normally do. The slower op's need not worry, I've never heard a skcc op not slow down during a skcc event. Please don't let the theme scare you away. All speeds and skill levels are welcome and beginners are encouraged to participate.

Soapbox
AB7MP My 1st sprint - fun. A little difficult because WSU was losing to USC while I was on the air! :-)

K0LUW Band conditions were especially poor but still a lot of fun. Worked a bunch of newbies - lots of fun.

K4BAI FT1000MP, Alpha 78, 1 KW, dipole, zepp, inverted vee. Time limited this month. Thanks for QSOs. QSLs welcome via SKCC bureau. 73, John, K4BAI.

KJ4TQ Had a lot of fun again making music with a key named Lucille. Lucille's a US Navy Flameproof with the sweetest touch and light feel for hours of sitting on a circuit. The big raised knob fits a hand like no other.

KG4W Put about as much effort into this one as this (almost 65 yr old)om could muster. Lots of fun, used the SKCC KEY s/n 78 this time. Will 15m ever open again ? no qsos on 15 or 10. Don N1LU & I qsyed from 80 & made a contact on 160, which was my only oso on that band. Now, to go rest..dit dit.

W6UT I had a great time. First one that I have been able to work for extended period. Picked up a couple of new Cs & Ts towards my Tribune endorsement on 80 meters. Got up early this morning so I could work 80 meters to the east. Picked up 10 Qs before my walk on 80 this morning. Already looking forward to Oct. 28th Sprint. Even had time to move AD7MP to 30 meters for a quick Q. Working towards finishing Centurion on 30. Wonderful to see quite a few new numbers working.

KC9HGW I worked some at the beginning and some at the end of the Sprintathon. Only had one contact west of the Mississippi.

AF2Z Started slow, took a half hour to get first QSO. 20m was dead and 40m was long. I was hoping to make 50 Q's but had to cut out before primetime Sunday; oh well, maybe next time. Had a feeling that 20m might be good for the contest wrap up; hope so. Tnx to all & 73

KA3CTQ Great to hear some new calls during this weekend, 5 new numbers. Also great to hear some of the steady players.

AJ1M Had a lot of fun in the sprint. Thanks to all for the contacts.

WR5U Great turn out for the event. I thought I had ruined my wrist Saturday evening, but it came back to life Sunday for more action. Thanks for a very enjoyable sprint many very good ops, with singing straight keys and bug. I had 126 member QSOs logged along with 18 non-members. I ran the amp when conditions called for it. Can't wait for the next one. Sure was a lot of fun. Mike // WR5U

KC0PWA My first contest. A lot of fun! Thanks for sponsoring this event.

W1DV Great time. Seems like every time I turned on the radio I heard WR5U, KG4W, and W6UT! My operating time was curtailed with two family picnics over the weekend and preaching Sun morning but still managed to have a good time. It was especially good to see/hear all the "new" members (with high SKCC numbers); also there were a good number of C and T stations active. Looking forward to the next one - 73

WU7R I could only work a few short time periods since we were camping out. As always, great fun. I used primarily a Ten Tec Argonaut V with an Outbacker antenna and either a Navy flameproof or a Vizkey Vertical bug.

N1LU Had fun. Picked up many Q's towards my centurion.

W9CC Didn't get a chance to work as much as I wanted, but it was fun as always. Was using my new Camelback straight key. It is made by Begali Keys, and it is a dandy!

NT9K Lots of new members worked this time. I mostly used my new homebrew AmpliGHD key, but as normal I had to jump over to my trusty Navy Flameproof. My rig was a TS-870 at 100w into an inverted vee up 40 feet at the apex. For 20 meters, I use my Cushcraft MA5B mini beam. For the few contacts I made on 80 meters, I tuned my beams coax. Nobody could hear my gap vertical.

W9TFC What fun. Band conditions were great. Even 80 meters was quiet. Didnt hear much activity on 20 meters. 40 meters was jumping with activity. I worked Ed KG4W and Mike WR5U on 80, 40, and 20 meters. Looking forward to building a key for the Oct 28th spring. 73 es CU ON CW. Picture is of my HB key I built in August this year and pounded on this weekend.

AA4HT Great Sprint...40 Meters was good but 20 and 80 were not very good from Florida

K1NV Glad to see some 80 meter activity. The 20 meter activity was sparce, but 40 meters made up for it. Had especially nice QSO with KE7LOY, Brian, in Idaho who was booming in with his new vertical antenna. It was a fun activity!

KL7GLL Another really fun SKS!! Lots of activity, but missed hearing a lot of the usual stations from the 5th and 10th call areas. Wrkd a new state (NV), leaving only 2 to go for SKCC WAS. Great to hear and wrk lots of stations I'd not run into before. Also seems the non-member participation is increasing. Great to hear all the stations on 80 mtrs. 20 mtrs not too hot this time. Bring on the next SKS!!!

AA2XB Didn't make many contacts but as it was such a warm evenig I enjoyed operating my qrp rig with 5 watts on battery power outdoors with a 40 meter dipole up about 15 feet in a couple of trees. Light and coffee courtsey of coleman stove and lantern.

W4BGH This was my first Sprint and I had a good time.

N1AS I spent about 1 hour on 40 meters. Several signals, all sounding pretty good. This was my first major activity on the rig since last May's SKS. It was fun. I'll see if I can post a pic.

K5IZO This is only my second SKCC weekend sprint. It seemed a little slower but still quite enjoyable. I am a beginning key collector with about 70 keys. I am trying to make at least one Q with each key. This forces me to get any that are "on the edge" in working order. I used 4 this time. The photo attached is one of those - a British Post Office, High Knob, circa 1915.

KB9YGD Tnx all for the wonderfull time es 73 de kb9ygd

AC2C My first weekend sprint. A lot of fun. I'll be back next month.

W3RT Had some nice contacts, some good propogation, and 80 worked gud for me. Looking forward to the next round of activity.

(Hope to make some skeds w/ other ops soon to get my "C"!)

N1VWD Icom 736
Windom @ 30'
Bencher RJ-1 straight key
Qth Waltham, Vt

NE7D Could only jump in for a couple of short operating times, but always fun to give out a few points and occasionally a new state.

N6CMF First SKCC Sprint effort and found it most enjoyable!
Certainly will be back for more fun....

AB8FJ Wonderful Sprint. Great way to celebrate my 36th anniversary as a licensed amateur radio operator. First licensed as a Novice on September 23, 1971. I used my Novice key, the brass morse key as it was advertised by Radio Shack back in 1971. The rig was my Ten-Tec Argonaut V at 20W to the end-fed random wire.
